All Notch did was gave it a bit more features and made it seem more fun, and it succeeded at that. The heart can be broken with a hammer, and then you can pick it up and consume it, and it will give you +20 hp to your max health, and afterwards a nurse will move in if you have enough rooms

Lol, you need to read up on Terraria through the Terraria wiki pages, they have lots of info. That way if you come across new items ... like a heart .... you wont miss out XD

1) You missed iron on your way down. 2) You need to craft a wooden hammer to break that crystal heart, put it in your inventory and left click while you're holding it to activate it. It gives +20 health and 1 extra heart to your max life. You need more wood to start crafting. Iron has a darker tinge than stone. Copper looks like well copper... Gold has a grainy yellow shade to it, silver looks like stone but a lot shinier.

You need some wood to craft more stuff, get it by chopping the base of a tree off.

Acorns are just like minecraft saplings, but they need to be planted on Grass.

These Walls that you got are only useful when you're building a house (not a cave), since it will cover the background, you just need light and no creeps can spawn in there.

These 'falling' dirts are just sparkles from the Torches lighting up the darkness.
