glam punk..it dont matter none..this is amazing..this is one of the things thats great about america!!!! to bad the other stuff suck..our mongering & greed sucks....n.y.dolls, louis armstrong, elvis, harper lee..america gives the world great art in all forms...but tthe new york dolls wow...turn it up some more.!!!
YOU ARE ALL RIGHT. The NYD were all of the glam, punk, hard and taking a bit from lots of artists, they are still unique and WAY WAY before their time, or they would have been more well known. Johanson can sing anything well.
im gonna see them on the 12th of augest... they are in concert with motley crue and poison.... i love crue and poison but ive never heared of the NY Dolls... hope there good
this is my favorite dolls video i have ever seen . to me johnny thunders was the baddest coolest meanest motherfucken guitar player ever. and this video proves it
when Bolan and Bowie dressed up- they looked believable: beautiful , androgynous, well made-up and attractive.
--When the Dolls dressed up- they looked unbelievable - like men, imitating bowery hookers...not particularly attractive - more in your face, scary, with a switchblade knife in their boot.
@DrJTG That is a FANTASTIC description! I've never read better.
If only I'd been born 10 years earlier, I'da crossed the river and seen 'em every chance I got! I've seen 'em twice in the last few years, and they certainly ROCK, but it woulda been special to see 'em as they were up 'n coming...and all alive!
I just came from wattching a interview w/ the strokes but went to this instead & I'm not trying to slam the strokes or any new rock but there's so much more being offered here in 3:23 than in over 10 min of the strokes interview...why?
david bowie hung out with the dolls before their first record came out [ he was good friends with the first drummer billy and there is a verse about him in the bowie song time] bowie started writing and playing heaver songs after he met them. they influenced 4 styles rock . glam kiss took there name from one of there songs. were would punk be without j. thunders guitar style. new wave stuff like morrissey. and glam metal they all had johnny thunders hair cuts
i know a glam metal head who dresses like nikkie six right? well he makes fun of me for listenin to old school punk. i just smile, laugh, and sing this song to myself
Sure their image was a huge inspiration for Nikki Sixx and awesome guys like that, but their music was certainly not, atleast not very much, the dolls were an r&b band, like the early stones. They were more like the girl groups (Shangri Las, Ronettes, etc) than anything else, just add heroin and power chords, their so fuckin great
Neither Bowie nor Bolan had the "attitude" of these boys...and they paid the price for it. Johnny Thunders was killed for his methadone in a New Orleans hotel. Other members have died hard. Still, the ride was all "rock n roll"!
For my part, the Dolls were the missing link between the Stones and the Sex Pistols and the true forerunners to the New York punk-rock scene and beyond. Those hairy bands of the 80's are nothing but their "evil offspring".
Anyways, their music always trips me out, nuff said.
The New York Dolls aren't the fathers of glam rock... they're often considered fathers of punk, but musicians like Bolan and Bowie were already doing it before the Dolls were formed, unique as they were.
for me the dolls are the fathers of glam rock for their raw attitude, like no other in the glam rock of the seventy era..much hard glam band of the eighties have been inspired by the dolls.i love also t.rex.
for me the dolls have been the inspiration of the hard glam band of the eighties for their raw attitude like no others glam bands in the seventy era.but i love also t.rex and bowie.
@MmeLEnfer well the dolls and the stooges were the fathers of punk and although they were after bowie and the velvet underground and all that fun stuff they still had a big part in it
@MrAnarchyintheusa Of course that's correct. I never said the Dolls weren't the fathers of punk - I said they definitely were not the fathers of glam, since there were a lot of glam acts preceding them.
@MmeLEnfer a great observation i've noted is that the velvet underground, the new york dolls, the stooges, and david bowie are all categorized as the beginnings of glam and also punk( that is except for bowie) i find that relation pretty interesting and contradictory in a way
@MrAnarchyintheusa It is pretty interesting, I'd agree with Bowie, Stooges and Velvets - the only reason I'd disagree about New York Dolls (only as regards glam - with punk I agree they were one of the founders) is that they came later than acts like Alice Cooper, T.Rex and David Bowie and so they did have a precedent visually. Musically, their style fits in a bit more with punk but anyway, I love the Dolls.
@MmeLEnfer Well.. The Dolls were doing the glam before Bowie did, they inspired him to do it. You got to read Please Kill Me, a great book about Punk (and Glam).
@MmeLEnfer of course, TNYD were at the end of glam rock, they were sort of that seedy-rock, louche, glam hybrid that would eventually turn into great and pure disreputable punkrock, the missing link between bowie and sex pistols/velvetU
@MmeLEnfer i guess i meant stylistically rather than chronologically, but ur absolutely right...it wouldve maybe been more apt to say NYD took a page from both bowie and reed&co. to become the punk's precursors... NYD took the proverbial hit from the joints that were lou and bowie, and that high's crescendo is what we now know as the Sex Pistols, lol
the dolls changed everything...

I give the credit to Bolan, since he was the one who got Bowie into the music scene..
Anyway.
We wouldnt have half of what we do if it werent for the dolls. It's good and its bad.
But give credit where its due...
The dolls brought a lot of good to the music world.

Glam Rock has nothing to do with "raw attitude" or the '80s. John Lennon called it "Rock&Roll with lipstick on".
The Dolls "fathers" of Glam Rock? I doubt it. Mothers, if anything, and of something infinitely bigger and better than Glam Rock.
Of course, you can think what you like, but it doesn't mean you're right!
Thanks for the post
