Big difference:

when Bolan and Bowie dressed up- they looked believable: beautiful , androgynous, well made-up and attractive.

--When the Dolls dressed up- they looked unbelievable - like men, imitating bowery hookers...not particularly attractive - more in your face, scary, with a switchblade knife in their boot.

david bowie hung out with the dolls before their first record came out [ he was good friends with the first drummer billy and there is a verse about him in the bowie song time] bowie started writing and playing heaver songs after he met them. they influenced 4 styles rock . glam kiss took there name from one of there songs. were would punk be without j. thunders guitar style. new wave stuff like morrissey. and glam metal they all had johnny thunders hair cuts

Sure their image was a huge inspiration for Nikki Sixx and awesome guys like that, but their music was certainly not, atleast not very much, the dolls were an r&b band, like the early stones. They were more like the girl groups (Shangri Las, Ronettes, etc) than anything else, just add heroin and power chords, their so fuckin great

Neither Bowie nor Bolan had the "attitude" of these boys...and they paid the price for it. Johnny Thunders was killed for his methadone in a New Orleans hotel. Other members have died hard. Still, the ride was all "rock n roll"!

For my part, the Dolls were the missing link between the Stones and the Sex Pistols and the true forerunners to the New York punk-rock scene and beyond. Those hairy bands of the 80's are nothing but their "evil offspring".

Anyways, their music always trips me out, nuff said.

Glam Rock has nothing to do with "raw attitude" or the '80s. John Lennon called it "Rock&Roll with lipstick on".

The Dolls "fathers" of Glam Rock? I doubt it. Mothers, if anything, and of something infinitely bigger and better than Glam Rock.

Of course, you can think what you like, but it doesn't mean you're right!

@MrAnarchyintheusa It is pretty interesting, I'd agree with Bowie, Stooges and Velvets - the only reason I'd disagree about New York Dolls (only as regards glam - with punk I agree they were one of the founders) is that they came later than acts like Alice Cooper, T.Rex and David Bowie and so they did have a precedent visually. Musically, their style fits in a bit more with punk but anyway, I love the Dolls.
