Plagiarism is the cornerstone of the music industry guys.... everyone takes a little influence from the bands/composer/vocalists that they listen to and (whether or not it's intentional is another matter). But the whole sounding like the beatles thing is just media spin... and it's not the first (or last) time they've applied this term to a band. And what's wrong with giving a nod to one of your influences? So what....
If you want to write as well as the Beatles then you shouldn't really listen to them, but listen to what THE BEATLES WERE LISTENING TO.Then you might come close. Also go 'on the road' at 17 playing16 hours a day in a German club just a few years after WWII living in a storage room sharing socks, women, men, pills.Learning the arse off every song going ,even ones that people thought are uncool.Oasis sound like a wet weekend in John Lennon's composting toilet because they were listening too narrowly.
I really never liked this Liam Gallagher guy - his brother is a lot more talented but still carries the same sort of 'down the nose' sneery attitude, which is difficult to understand. Its not really punk, and definitely not rebel. Its just, well, boring bad attitude really. I think a lot of it is born of insecurity. Sorry to hark back to that 90's popular-in-the-press rivalry, but give me Blur and the associated art any day. Albarn/Coxon v Gallaghers? No contest.
@larousserie to say they look down their noses at people when they say that they dont like middle class and hate snobs is a bit unfair. you could say a lot about liam gallagher but one thing you cant call him is boring.
I donno what all the arguing is about. both of these men are/were extremely talented musicians and hell raisers. Lennon routinely shoplifted and was sent to the principles office in his youth. He even mugged a drunken sailor in Hamburg for his money... though he obviously grew out of that much more than liam has. But who knows, maybe liam just acts like an asshole for the camera.
The irony is John Lennon despised that kind of "macho" bullshit. Probably would have hated Liam too, and the fact that Oasis rip them off constantly. John encouraged people to be original and was pretty against any Beatle wannabe shit.
@YesterdayWentTooSoon- Difference is Liam is a knob and John wasn't. John was a trouble maker but only because he was anti-establishment and unique, Liam clearly isn't and the only reason he's a "trouble-maker" was because he was a mink who used to steal people's bikes when they went in shops. Just sounds like a chav to me. Lennon hated that sort of bravado shit, cause he saw right through it.
@theredraven Well ??? I dunno what to say. Tormented souls, right, that's what everybodies interested in. I find that attractive about John Lennon, does that make me sick.
@theredraven- I've never heard of John hitting any women. Cheating is a thing that happens, it's not nice but it happens to everyone. John never went about claiming he was the best thing ever or acted tough, he was confident and spoke his mind and could be more than a little offensive to some, but he never put it on. Liam on the other hand does, he comes across as a fucking dolt with the IQ of a squirrel.
@piemakesmelol that's the point i was trying to make to @theredraven. liam has got the iq of a squirrel. John may have hit them, i dunno. but he acted with a bit more sense.
@CarEdy23- Difference is John never COPIED them. You can like and be influenced by an artist without ripping them off, Liam and Noel don't know that though.
@CarEdy23- No, that's just what people say to get around calling it a rip-off. You don't copy the exact same tune, appearance, style, sound from another band and call it a "tribute", that's theft.
@CarEdy23- He's not talented. If he was talented he would be able to write an original song but he can't. He also wouldn't have a haircut that makes him look like a special needs kid. I think John would dislike him, he hated copy-cats and he hated the "macho-man" shit.
The 'Oasis rip off the beatles' slogan, really is the height of ignorance. Just face the fact that Oasis blended so many classic rock styles and added their own wall of sound. Also, liam sounded fuckin amazing in his day.
@TheMrbollox- That's rubbish...there's nothing wrong with being influenced by a band or an artist. And even adopting a similar style is not that bad, however Oasis don't just do that. They take actual tunes and riffs from other bands and market them as their own, that's theft. Like Cigarettes and Alcohol it's the exact same riff as T-Rex's Bang a Gong. That's not inspiration or a tribute that's being a lazy writer.
@piemakesmelol, maybe they do take riffs off of other bands. However, when they take those riffs and put them into their songs the riff takes on a different meaning. I get a completely different sensation from Cigarettes and Alcohol than I do from Bang a Gong, which indicates to me that each song has a uniqueness that the other doesn't. Oasis, just like the Stones, take from their inspirations and build upon them. That's not lazy song writing, that's honouring the artists that inspired you.
@TubesforDudes- That's simply not true. They can't be credited as 'writing' that song if the main riff was written by another band. There's no way two ways around it, if you are taking another riff or piece of music from another band and are not giving them credit, that is theft. Oasis are therefore thieves. This whole "honoring' rubbish doesn't make sense, considering they aren't giving credit where credit is due. They're unoriginal song writers because there's nothing special about them.
@piemakesmelol , if that is the case then how do you explain blues music? Whenever I listen to blues music I feel like I can predict the note/chord that comes next. From what I can tell, blues musicians have been re-using guitar riffs since the inception of the genre. You can hear it in Clatpon, the Stones, Zeppelin, White Stripes, Black Keys... John Lennon himself did it on "Yer Blues." Personally, I would never call any of these song writers unoriginal.
@TubesforDudes- That's because follows the blues scale, that's how the genre is defined. It's not very original but that's just what blues is. And a lot of modern musicians, like the Black Keys and The White Stripes have managed to create interesting riffs within the blues scale. That's why they sound original. Because it is. They may sound similar, but they don't take actual RIFFS from one another like Oasis does.
@piemakesmelol Actually, it would seem these artists do take riffs like Oasis does. Zeppelin got sued for Whole Lotta Love, George Harrison for My Sweet Lord. The White Stripes took the Heart Shaped Box riff for I Can't Wait, and John Lennon was sued for Come Together. With the exception of I Can't Wait, these tracks are arguably the respective artists biggest hits, and yet they have been legally penalized for stealing. I just don't see why Oasis is deserving of any more scrutiny than they are.
Liam is so cool. He has the best voice I've listened... well I like very much Bon Scott's voice and Brian Johnson's voice but Liam's voice is different, he has something that make you listen and listen. I like so much.
