@MegaScreamingbanshee Why the "no homo"?? It's okay for men to like other men's accent without the assumption of homophilia... At least, it should be.
@MegaScreamingbanshee I know, it's the same here in Belgium (especially among (foreigner) youths). I'm not gay myself and try not to care about what others think of me. Besides, it's only youtube, no one knows whether you're a man or a woman anyway, by saying "no homo" it's all the more easy to think you are because of your defensive attitude.
@takidagurl There are plenty of beginner lessons on youtube. Walking basslines are not for beginners, so I suggest searching for 'beginner lessons', and try getting a good book on bass, which should guide you through things in an easier order.
Also, try to learn music theory as early as possible. I have the Theory Time books, which take you from the very basics through as far as you want.
Hi. Should we play all of our key roots on the A string? for example when i use the G on the e-string and play Ami7-D7-Gmaj7 i am forced to use the 5 chord above the octave instead of below. Should we get comfortable with this or just play all roots across the A string? thankyou
because in the key of D, F is sharped... therefore F natural will give you a min 3.
Think of your root as Do , and then think of the key signature. Maj. has a maj 3, minor has a flat 3 = Fnatural in the key of D. your chord symbol should look like = ii7, meaning a minor chord, with a minor 7th
I'm not clear on moving this exercise through all the 12 keys. Meaning all of the sharp and flat key signatures? That's 15 keys, not 12 right? Or is it just through the modes? That's 7 keys. What am I missing?
@olflatop There are in fact 15 keys, but 3 of the keys are enharmonic to another key. Enharmonic notes are two different notes that have the exact same pitch. So for example, the notes B and Cb flat are the exact same pitch Another example would be the key of F# major being enharmonic to Gb major. And the last enharmonic key is C# to Db. So when you practice in the keys of Cb, Gb, and Db flat, you are technically practicing two keys at once. Harmonically of course, they differ.
Wow, great video! you explain a basic concept of walking bass lines very clearly and accurately. This is definitely one of the best lesson/explanation videos I've seen on YouTube. Not only is it a great left hand exercise but learning the ii V I cadence is also a great intro into jazz bass. Thanks for the excellent video
My dad used to rape guys like you and make me choke myself with their instrument strings while I watched. So like, would you want to get a drink or something later? If the answer is yes, could you also bring a stringed instrument you enjoy playing?
Hey Dave, thanks for doing this video. It's a really useful intro into walking bass & I'll certainly refer people on to this rather than trying to teach them myself - you're a much better teacher than me!
And why are these all 7-chords, I mean I understand that the 2nd step is Dmin because there is no F-sharp-note in the key of C; that means that the D-chord has to be minor not major, but why is it also a 7-chord??

@CARBONxBASS Practice, thats all there is to it. Although, you could move you hand around, its less convieniant but still works, i used to do it, but then after a while you will sort of get used to using your pinky when u play fast bass lines and it will come naturaly
one question, if the note note i play first is a D, then if what i am playing is correct, the chord im playing should be D mino, maojor, et c corresponding to what i play first?
Thank you so much! I'm a drummer trying to get a little more understanding of bass, and it's great to find someone on youtube that actually knows what they're doing enough to teach it to beginners! The pdf's on your site will give me plenty of material to work with - time to dive in!

thanks a lot for the video, it's really helped me so far. however, i have a question about the chord progression you're using: im familiar with 2-5-1 progressions from my old 6-string guitar theory, though im slightly confused as to why you're only using 7th chords for your progression. is it simply for the example shown, or is it because ALL 2-5-1 progressions use 7th chords? if so/not, what are the rules that 2-5-1's follow? hope you can help, and thanks again.
Do you play the Dmin7 Arpeggio when the guitarist plays the Dmin7 chord and the G7 when the guitarist plays a G7 chord, and the CMaj7 chord when the guitarist plays the CMaj7 chord?
