  • I keep tuning out. Try espresso, it does wonderful things.

  • You must be confused, I don't see any lesson page on you site!

  • Are you Billy Marks brother?

  • the link to the PDF appears to be broken...

  • I can't listen a note :(

  • The bass could've been a bit louder. Other than that, good stuff.

  • sleippin the biezz

  • Hi dave ,how many years of bass experience do you have????

  • The string tuning from thickest to thinest are E, A, D, G. So when he says E7, find the 7th fret on the thickest string. Cheers.

  • @kosmicwizard I'm affraid E7 (or G7 or C7 whatever) is just a variation on the E chord, and not the 7th fret on your E string mate :) cheers

  • @munckieface Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. Cheers.

  • SLAPPA DA BASS MON

  • r u from belfast

  • no homo, but your accent is awesome dude!!!

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee Why the "no homo"?? It's okay for men to like other men's accent without the assumption of homophilia... At least, it should be.

  • @yekshemesh4alig not in america -_- everyone is so homophobic these days, so you cant say anything without it being labled as "gay"

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee I know, it's the same here in Belgium (especially among (foreigner) youths). I'm not gay myself and try not to care about what others think of me. Besides, it's only youtube, no one knows whether you're a man or a woman anyway, by saying "no homo" it's all the more easy to think you are because of your defensive attitude.

Sorry Dave, for discussing this here.

  • gringo pelotudo

  • Dave, your PDF is missing : |

  • where is the pdf? :S

  • Don't think this was a very good lesson.. I'm a beginner and don't even know which is a etc.

  • @takidagurl There are plenty of beginner lessons on youtube. Walking basslines are not for beginners, so I suggest searching for 'beginner lessons', and try getting a good book on bass, which should guide you through things in an easier order.

Also, try to learn music theory as early as possible. I have the Theory Time books, which take you from the very basics through as far as you want.

  • @smrt606 That was what I was looking for. "beginner lessons". Found this. LOL.

  • great lesson mate, thanks!

  • your chest hair is showing!

  • just so you guys know, he's actually irish, and one of the best teachers i have ever had a lesson from (even if it was a master class)

  • Lol I could listen to his accent alllll dayyyy <3!

  • good job

  • Hi. Should we play all of our key roots on the A string? for example when i use the G on the e-string and play Ami7-D7-Gmaj7 i am forced to use the 5 chord above the octave instead of below. Should we get comfortable with this or just play all roots across the A string? thankyou

  • It LookS Like He STARES At Your SOUL! O.o

  • is he jamehhikhann ???

  • @MalteSer001 Irish i think

  • @rockersince1995 Sco-ish!

  • @kosmicwizard "Sco-ish" lol ... i closer than " jamehhikann" haha

  • finally! some good walking bass lesson videos

  • @TehReeper740 are you a tard?

  • @butty41 No, he's foreign...

  • Because it's a bass?

  • @thanextbigthingcjc Nope, because it's a bass. LOL. XD

  • Congrats, Dave!

Ya got a beauty and strong way to think 'bout this!

    Thanx, man! Helped a lot!

  • pikey...

  • @ilikenumbers123 *Irish.

  • theres a dirty northern irish accent yeo belfast prabs leik

  • Thanks that really helped I'm learning all by myself and it's people like you who make this easy!

  • Say "slappin the bass".

    PLEASE

  • @seamonkeyguitars why...that's for people with a jamaican accent to say. it would be pointless for this guy to say it.

  • i love how he says BASS. its like "bies," so cool!

  • thnks!

  • "Woking besslines" :D ROFTL - sorry. Thank you for the lesson and the playing :)

  • but if IIM7= root+b3rd+5th-b7th why the b3rd is a F istead of a bF ?

  • @razorgif

because in the key of D, F is sharped... therefore F natural will give you a min 3.

  • @razorgif

because in the key of D, F is sharped... therefore F natural will give you a min 3.

Think of your root as Do , and then think of the key signature. Maj. has a maj 3, minor has a flat 3 = Fnatural in the key of D

  • @razorgif

because in the key of D, F is sharped... therefore F natural will give you a min 3.

Think of your root as Do , and then think of the key signature. Maj. has a maj 3, minor has a flat 3 = Fnatural in the key of D. your chord symbol should look like = ii7, meaning a minor chord, with a minor 7th

  • Thanks for the vid., dude!

  • You remind me of the dwarves from WoW... :D

  • who cares about his fucking accent this guy rules!

  • cool lesson! be sure to check Yossi Hamami.

  • thank you haha

  • is that a marcus miller sig??

  • wait! can you clarify again what a 2, 5,1 progression is??

  • thanks !

    you r great !

    chopper

  • aw dear, hearing your own accent online is funny! you may love the accent...but when you actually have it...its just cringe most of the time. :(

  • omg I love that irish accent! ^_^ <3

  • aye man your website helps me out alot, i have an Ernie Ball Stingray 5, i love Musicman basses, when are you coming to toronto??

  • I'm not clear on moving this exercise through all the 12 keys. Meaning all of the sharp and flat key signatures? That's 15 keys, not 12 right? Or is it just through the modes? That's 7 keys. What am I missing?

  • @olflatop There are in fact 15 keys, but 3 of the keys are enharmonic to another key. Enharmonic notes are two different notes that have the exact same pitch. So for example, the notes B and Cb flat are the exact same pitch Another example would be the key of F# major being enharmonic to Gb major. And the last enharmonic key is C# to Db. So when you practice in the keys of Cb, Gb, and Db flat, you are technically practicing two keys at once. Harmonically of course, they differ.

  • @JacobyLong Ah yes, I didn't consider the enharmonics. Thanks for clarifying.

  • @JacobyLong the only way that explanation can work if there not getting is by teaching them this will looking at a ketboard.

  • I want your bass! D:<

  • 2:18 , beautiful tweets!

  • I wanna learn to play a bass <3 But I don't have the money to buy a bass, nor to get lessons on it T_T

  • Wow, great video! you explain a basic concept of walking bass lines very clearly and accurately. This is definitely one of the best lesson/explanation videos I've seen on YouTube. Not only is it a great left hand exercise but learning the ii V I cadence is also a great intro into jazz bass. Thanks for the excellent video

  • Can You do do more video on how to play begginner song or even some cool blues riffs for the bass. I love your videos.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Dave, thanks for doing this video. It's a really useful intro into walking bass & I'll certainly refer people on to this rather than trying to teach them myself - you're a much better teacher than me!

  • Has anyone noticed how his name is dave marks an he really looks like billy marks(pro skater) :D

  • What is the difference between CMaj7 and C7?

And why are these all 7-chords, I mean I understand that the 2nd step is Dmin because there is no F-sharp-note in the key of C; that means it the D-chord has to be minor not major, but why is it also a 7-chord??

  • @666Zerstoeren666 CMaj7 is spelled C, E, G, B

    C7 is spelled C, E, G, Bb (flat the 7th note)

  • what amp do you use

  • very easy video. thanks!

  • ive got the bass for your face...

  • reggae bass lesson

  • Wow, this was really helpful, thanks Dave! Altruism; it's a good thing. :-)

  • norn iron all the way lad

  • i have smaller hands and my pinky isnt strong enough, what should i do?

  • @CARBONxBASS Practice, thats all there is to it. Although, you could move you hand around, its less convieniant but still works, i used to do it, but then after a while you will sort of get used to using your pinky when u play fast bass lines and it will come naturaly

  • I love the sound of your bass. What are you using to record the audio? Thanks

  • i like eggggggs

  • great.

  • one question, if the note note i play first is a D, then if what i am playing is correct, the chord im playing should be D mino, maojor, et c corresponding to what i play first?

  • YOOOO up the Northern Irish fella!!!

  • gonna save this vid to my faves 'cause I'm starting to learn bass now & I want to get all these chords down pat

  • hehehe.....irish.

  • Thank you so much! I'm a drummer trying to get a little more understanding of bass, and it's great to find someone on youtube that actually knows what they're doing enough to teach it to beginners! The pdf's on your site will give me plenty of material to work with - time to dive in!

  • very good video.

  • bro I've been playing bass for more than 3 months in my church.. Just the basic pluck in I've been playing. I still do not know when to use these scales?

  • thanks for sharing, dave... for those who have problems finding the pdf files (like me), click Watch -> Lessons -> Walking Bass on his website...

  • scary look in his eyes. he's a killer and part-time bassist

  • Excellent instruction, Dave. Very thorough and informative without being condescending. You covered and defined some basic musical vocabulary as well as structure. I don't usually post to people's videos but I wanted to give you some props for the job you've done. I'm definitely going to check out your other videos.

    Keep up the good work!

  • which boondock saint is he again?

  • Dave do you give private lessons??

  • arpegious?

  • I love you your so cute

  • thank you ~

  • haha its like learning bass from colin farrell, fuckin love it

  • You are just annoying!

  • Dave - FANTASTIC instructional video! Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together.

  • Is it just me or does his accent come and go?

  • hello dave and thanks for the leassons,i just picked up the bass 2 days ago,i wonder on the right hand should i be using 2 fingers or 3???

  • thanks a lot for the video, it's really helped me so far. however, i have a question about the chord progression you're using: im familiar with 2-5-1 progressions from my old 6-string guitar theory, though im slightly confused as to why you're only using 7th chords for your progression. is it simply for the example shown, or is it because ALL 2-5-1 progressions use 7th chords? if so/not, what are the rules that 2-5-1's follow? hope you can help, and thanks again.

  • Like your videos, they help me a lot with various points of playing bass :)

  • lisen to old boston, molly hatchet, lynyrd skynyrd, allman brothers, thats some good groving bass

  • Good tutorial, im a walking bass master!

  • we have the same bass :)

  • Do you play the Dmin7 Arpeggio when the guitarist plays the Dmin7 chord and the G7 when the guitarist plays a G7 chord, and the CMaj7 chord when the guitarist plays the CMaj7 chord?

  • Yes. That's one approach that works. :-)

  • @davemarks r u irish?

  • @puppetmetal Or you could try using the relative major or minor key, and harmonise with the guitarist

  • Thank you so much for these wonderful lessons. i can't afford to go to school - so i really thank you!

  • this seems a bit too advanced for me right now...but good info.

  • I am having trouble finding the lessons you refer to in this video. Any hints?

  • Very generous of you to share your talent and bass knowledge...thanks for posting!

  • an irish who lives in america

  • You mean who lives in London? LOL

  • ye, soz, but has sommet to do wid america

  • Irish guy who lives in London, UK. :-)

  • Italian living in Cork here ;)

  • @davemarks You have a very light accent, and in parts you sound western American. No offense, I just can't help noticing. Cheer from America, I like your vids.

  • @davemarks Thats what I hear in it. Thanks for the lesson Dave ;)

  • Oh man. I don't see the .pdf files you are talking about under the Lessons section of your web site. Can you tell me where else I might be able to find this? Thanks! PS. I did see you answer the strumming questions though! Thanks.

  • Oops.... check out the Youtube page on my site :-)

  • thanks for the info, however it is difficult to see what frets your fingers are pressing on from this distance.....you should really have a much tighter camera view on your fret hand

  • Love your teaching approach and style. Very clear to understand/comprehend and all comments were very helpful for someone just starting out. When you said to download the PDF's from the lessons' page of your web site I thought I would keel over with joy and happiness. Debating on the finger picking vs. pick right now. Any tips or insight into that would be greatly appreciated! God Bless Dave Marks! Feel like I've found a pot of gold. =)

  • Great Lesson. Cheers
