I have been a hairy assed rocker all my life and at 59 this just melts me. Takes me back to a better time when everyone I cared about was still around and the world was happy.
I loved this song on Christmas, 1956 when it was first recorded and I still consider it the most beautiful song at Christmas. No one does it justice like Harry.
No where in the bible does it say when Jesus was born. It was almost certainly not in the dead of winter. Shepards are not out in the fields in winter time!!
@ArizonaKnightWolf So What! It's the spirit of Christmas that's important, NOT the when and wherefore. Christmas is associated with Winter, Snow, Snowballs and Snowmen. Have you forgotten? Get a life.
i posted on here last year but under glenn ,i have to listen but the tears still roll down my face ,every year my old mam would have this playing ,brings back so many happy memories i sit here thinking of the good times ,god bless you mam and thank you xxxx
One of my favorites! Written by Jester Hairston... Grandson of slaves here in NC... How can such tender, hopeful words come from one only 2 generations removed from such cruelty?
This song = christmas for me, I'm not an overly religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but this song brings back solid, clear, defined memories of my living room lit only with the christmas tree. I remember each light like a single, bright star, beautiful. I remember the smell of the pine, and the sense of home.
Overall, however, there is a pervading feeling of safety and home.
I love this song. It sounds to me like the words (which come from the 1950's I understand) were set to an old air, maybe Welsh, or Scottish or Irish. Does anyone know the origin of that melody?
Tears rolling down my face as i listen ,my old mam would play this every christmas day morning time after time ,god bless you mam and dad still missing you ,and i'm supposed to be that hard lolnot if you could see me at this moment ,bless you both xxx
My mother loved Belafonte's I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day. I just played that and also have tears rolling down my cheeks. I miss her too, and my father.
This was my favorite Christmas song when I was little. I would turn on the lights to the Christmas tree, turn off the other lights, and listen to it. When it was time to go to bed, I'd always ask my mom to sing it. I love this version, so much! But we only have it on tape and I haven't heard it for a long time. Thanks for posting!
My mom bought this album in the 70's. From then on, it has always been a part of our Christmas celebration. And since we're not all together anymore; living in 3 different countries, we can only reminisce the old times through Belafonte's, Ray Connif's and Elvis's old Christmas albums. I miss my family! Thanks for posting. :-)
One of my faves of all time - Dad had the album, now I do. Maybe its just nostalgia...but if there is 1 song that brings the spirit of this season to me - this is it. Thanks for posting.
I hadn't heard this song for about thirty years until today. It was as spine-tingling to hear it today as it was back then. With my improved appreciation and understanding of music, I now realise what a special singer this man is. He is a man of great courage and principle as well, having stood up for human rights and decency throughout his life.
A beautiful song...wonderful lyrics and sweet music to the ears. Praise God for giving Jesus as our Saviour. There is hope after death .....................for all who believe in Jesus Christ!
this song has brought back my good old memories---when I was with my parents, brothers and sisters and most of them are now gone. May they rest in Peace.
how nice! how'd you know. this song for me is the perfect Christmas song because of Christmas' essence and coming: A NEW KING BORN TODAY AND MAN WILL LIVE FOREVERMORE BECAUSE OF CHRISTMAS DAY. i wish atheists would be no more as they are so they can enjoy this as well
I just heard this song for the first time on my alarm. When my alarm first rang it was exactly at the start of this song. I had worked until late Christmas eve and so I went back to bed and reset the alarm. When it rang again it was again at the very beginning of this song. It is the most beautiful Christmas song I have ever heard and I found the Christmas spirit for the first time in years.
My mother would always have this playing when she woke us up Christmas morning, every year. And my grandfather did the same for her and my aunts when they were children, or for me and my brother and cousins if we spent Christmas with my grandparents. Even though I'm an agnostic, this song still means a lot to me, every time I hear it, be it at the mall or on the radio I have to stop whatever I'm doing and listen to the entire thing.
@Barashechath You should not just stop here by listening to this song. Go a further step, get to know who is this person that the Bible and Christians is talking about. You will learnt the truth and the truth will not only set you free...but gives you hope, peace, joy and love and a future hereafter.
"........a new king born today..........and man will live forever because of Christmas day..........". Thanks for this rare song by Harry Belafonte. It's such a good feeling to listen to it once more for so many years of not having to.
This version brings back memories of my childhood. When my grandmother (who lived with us), would hear this song on her radio, and she would crank it up for the whole house to hear. Harry Belefonte's voice is so gentle in this song. It is the absolute best version. Thanks for posting. Merry Christmas everyone!
