  • Cuba is one of the few latin places where they are well informed of their african heritage and they are proud of it. And this is one reason why I love the Cuban people. The Puerto Ricans also have a african heritage that they embrace.

  • Awesome! Ashe!

  • Amongst all the spanish territories Cuba has retained many of its African traditions. I wonder why? they appear to be well informed about their history,

  • i thought i saw the harlem shake there fo a minute

  • I'm Cuban and I love my culture. Cuba has a beautiful history. Long live Cuba.... Caballero arriva esa isla de bella de Cuba. A lot of people complain about this religion. but what they are ignoring is that this dances and religions have been existing for thousands of years even before Jesus Christ. Christianity is a modern religion. Yoruba is older than Christianity. and back then people used believed in their gods even the Europeans....so stop complaining and making no sense at all....

  • tranquilossssssssss que en el infierno tambien muchos que se llaman cristianos y los ves por aqui escribiendo y criticando,

    muy buen video felicitaciones

  • That was amazing! So beautiful and soulful.

  • She's absolutely beautiful

  • my abuela used to do that

DOBLE MORAL NO MIERDA

  • @waltalexander satanas?? mira estupido no me jodas.

  • oooow chiristians you are interesting peoples...

  • I just want to ask something and forgive my ignorance the tag says Babaluyae is that another orisha or they mean Babalu Aye I'm just curious..

  • Perhaps that is what she is feeling as she is dancing...that amazing spirit that comes from the enchanting rhythm that has claimed dominion over her.

  • speaking of possession, I would never say she was possessed by the devil. But I am a flamenco dancer, and when I dance I feel as though a spirit comes over me, there has been times when I dont see anyone around me..that the only thing I am coherant of is the music and myself...there is an amazing spirit that comes over me...it makes my heart race and everything around me disappear!

  • this!

  • Can I be really pedantic and throw a spanner in the works? She's dancing Arara or Sabalu, not Babalu. Similar dances, especially taking into account that Babalu was banished from Yoruba land by Olofi and ended up in the Dahomeyan Kingdom where he became Asoyi or Soyi. This pataki is one of my favourite ones and it was my first official dance (I had already done Eleggua and Chango but unofficially) with the Havana University Folkloric Ensemble. She's a terrific dancer, though.

  • Here in Brazil, Savalu is one dance of Obaluwayê (called here) on the Djedje Region (Dahomey). Also Oshumare (Dangbalah/Aida-Wedo) dances savalu. How works in there?

    Ashe o

  • abadeon, Djedje is the same as ewe, Dahomey, Sabalu, but it's the regions that matter. Take Yoruba. In Brazil it is different from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Colombia because it came mainly from two different regions, Oyo in Cuba and the others, Ketu in Brazil. This does not mean that you did not have African slaves from Oyo and that we did not have them from Ketu, but they were assimilated by the rest. Thanks for the correspondence. Ase for you, too!

  • Nice to have your answer so fast! Thank you.

Here we had slaves from Ketu and Oyo also and from Benin and Angola realms (minikongo, muxigonko, kasange). About 90% of the slaves that was brought to Brazil was from Angola region, only less than 10% was from Ivory Coast, but Yoruba people used to spread his costumes, while Angola people was closed to foreignes. Yoruba was brought in 18 and 19 century "only". Sorry about my english.

    Mo dupè

  • Hi, abadeon, ditto with us. The first African slaves came from the Congo, Angola and what used to be known as Zaire. The Yorubas were brought only at the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th when the Yoruba kingdom broke down after the attack from the fulanis. Nice to hear from you. Sorry if my correspondence takes longer to get to you. I am not in London at the moment, but enjoying a well deserved break in Malaysia.

    Take care

  • who told u and where did you learn that Yoruba kingdom broke down....i am a yoruba man from Nigeria.....and here we have yoruba from Oyo,Ogun, Ilu Eko which portugese called Lagos and also Ondo not to forget Osun state....i went to school in Nigeria and there was never a time that the fulanis attacked or broke down the Yoruba kingdom at least not in my Yoruba history class...o se un ''thank u''

  • Hi, Major, thanks for your correspondence. According to some Cuban scholars who have delved into the rich history of African cultures in Cuba and their influence, Yorubaland was (or is) divided in sixteen kingdoms, including the ones you mentioned, plus Ekiti, Iyesa and some others. Maybe I did not make myself clear and I apologise if it caused you any offense. By 'break down' I don't mean that it disappeared, far from it, but the Oyo kingdom was weakened after the invasion. Many thanks.

  • hey search for oyotunji on youtube and u will see some african americans in north carolina living the yoruba life......how they started i can't comprehend but i think it's fantastic and even the OBA ''king'' flew to nigeria to be recognised and officially crowned.....for me a yoruba from yoruba land in nigeria i couldn't believe my eyes the first time i saw the videos, i only heard! lol.

  • Is that why the color of Ogun in Brazil is blue?

  • she isn't possessed and you don't have to be possessed to dance this, its just a feeling for the music, the only way to learn it is to be around it

  • It`s nothing new for those who used to get pregnant. Many pregnant women here could perform dance as well. I guess the very first mom to be is an exception on this subject. Anyway nice & interesting Vclip! -NH

  • i agree with odeilu you can learn the dance for a santo but if the person has kariocha made and is mounted their level of dance goes to a whole other level and is very beautiful to see.

  • like i said before you can learn but you cant reach that beatifullnes that you see orichas or spirits wen they are coming to earth , i now she is not possesed but she can fell the curent or energy throug her boddy .

  • ok umm are you even cuban? Who told you this "info".
