Very helpful post. I came home from work tonight and couldn't get the car through Neutral and into Park, forcing me to leave the key in the ignition. I actually snapped the head off the key in frustration (hand hurts from that one too). Luckily the security system still recognizes my key after I reattached it.
Many of smart's 2008 fortwo production had a problem with the shifter getting stuck in Park. The release button would stop gliding smoothly when pressed and the result was a stuck shifter, which could happen at ant time. It was better to lubricate the parts prior to the problem and many owners lived far from their dealer and it was easier to do it at home.
