  • @zebport You disagree with yourself lol...

  • love this LOVE IT!!!!

  • @zebport i think id have to disagree with that as well, all you have to do is look at him and listen, theres soul in that. And being a bass player doesnt have to mean fitting in and blending with a band, although that just usually plays a huge part of it.

  • i don't know what all he does, but this guy should consider doing more soundtrack work. very atmospheric.

  • Wooow, you're a fantastic bass player!

An inspiration to many, thumbs up

  • Entrancing melody.

  • Manring's music reverberates in my skull and my chest in a way that I can't really describe... like it goes through my ears, but doesn't go to my brain to get processed. Instead, it goes to my whole body, and my brain says nothing but "close your eyes".

  • Michael Manring = Jesus of the Bass Guitar

  • For those who are thinking that playing on a bass is "easy", for those who needs basses with 5, 6, 8 strings or more... To all of us playing on 4 strings basses, Michael Manring is a good example that music is an art and a infinite source of inspiration ! Stunning.

  • to anyone putting down his performance, upload a video of you playing this, then improving on it.if you cant, then settle down.

  • Just one question: Is he able to reproduce any song twice? Or is he just fiddeling around? OK,it sounds just awesome. But are this reproduceable peaces of music?

  • @The1Kong Yes he does and yes he can.He plays these fine pieces many times over in many places. No he's not just fiddling around!Playing around SOUNDS like playing around.Any one can fiddle around. No one can do what HE does!

  • @gebass6 Thanks for Your reply. I didn´t know Manring. Yeah, in this case it´s awesome. But imagine: Any nerd could sit in a livingroom and fiddle on a bass. OK, not anybody, he should know how to play, the intonation is very good. But watching him remains me watching a child, playing with toys. He has fun, sits there, grinning - and "fiddling around". I don´t mean this in a unfavourable way. Thanks for the fast answer!

  • @The1Kong I can tell you're not a troll, so I will also reply to this - This is in NO way "fiddling around" I assure you...Every single song of his, he can (and STILL does) recreate Live PERFECTLY...I mean, this video itself is obviously live, so this is a prime example. There is an insane level of structure and what I suppose you could call "Quantum Music Theory" in each of his songs. And because of his 2 Signature Bass's De-Tuners, his songs are 100% unique and original. He cannot be matched.

  • @ThanatopicalRape Thank You for not calling me a troll, if You had done so, I never would get feedet again. :D

As You see on my reply to gebass6, I am able to change my mind. I didn't mean my question as offense of any kind, but I didn't know Mr. Manring at all. In the löast few months I got me some pieces of his musik, and all I can say about this: Awesome! I had a question about Mr. Manring, I did get an answer, andf I did look for further Information. No problem at all. :D ;-)

  • @ThanatopicalRape My Question came up because of the lightnes he plays. It sure looks like someone just improvise nice music. Therefore was that question. Please look at it again, and You will notice, that I only was interested in Manring and his music. Now I learned more, now I see clearer. Cheers.

  • Manring is absolutely incredible!

  • incredible... master of sound

  • I think if I work really hard at practicing scales chords patterns licks etc 16 hours a day for the next ten years I could be almost as good as Manrings little finger

  • ampeg

  • heh, never woulda thought to use a capo on a bass!

  • La Sagrada Familia starts at 04:05

  • jaco is lookin down from heaven..standing next to god..and saying "you really did a number on this one" :)

  • @doublethumpbass89 jaco and god must have worked together doing manring. Not sure if you know, but manring was jaco's student.

  • @libernull yeah i knew that...jaco started it..and manring mastered it

  • Dat why guitarist suck, and bass ftw, true talent and possiblities.

this guyz is god, dat all :o

  • Bless you!!! at 10:31 min

  • Truly amazing.

As a bass player, I am blown away not only by the music but by his technique. So fluent, so smooth, so talented! just amazing technique.

  • lovely. a true innovator on the electric bass :-)

  • I NEED A HYPERBASS!!!!!

  • @MrStrangeSensation I was feeling the same... until I saw the price....

  • @MrStrangeSensation Only if you can pull out that kind of

  • So much heart feeling in his pieces. Thats why he shines above the rest. Manring ftw

  • Great video, I wish Manring played at my house. Kind of harsh to sack someone for coughing.

  • bellissimo!

  • I love hearing that guy say, "Yeah" at 2:30

  • so really. you know your fucking excellent at what you do when you're playing fretless. Manring is fucking talenteddd

  • bellissimo......!!!!

  • wow. technique and emotion all wrapped up in one human being. off any type of chart.

  • His gear is absofuckinglutely ridiculous. I won't even get into Michael himself.

  • I know what a capo is. I've just never seen one on a bass guitar. I'm so used to seeing it on an acoustic guitar, never on electric guitar or bass guitar. Either way, awesome music by Michael Manring!

  • That's just what I asked, what is that thing on the neck of his Zon bass? I've never seen that before on a bass guitar. It looks like a capo you normally see on an acoustic guitar.

  • @Seattlecarnut it IS a capo... can't you see he takes it off near the end of the song?

  • I've never seen this bass guitar. Is that a different material for the body of the bass? That's a different colour for the Zon Hyperbass. And what's that up the neck?

  • @Seattlecarnut What's up the neck? Zon head

  • The intro immediately reminded me of the hub world in Braid.

  • Another thing he does is uses relatively small string gauges, standard gauge strings and lower tuned-standard gauge strings need a lot of energy to vibrate them amply enough but by using a thinner string less energy is required. Just something else to think about beyond all of the sweet spot stuff that is still needed.

  • not only is he extremely talented on bass, he's very proficient with the use of the ebow. i love the slightly Indian raga themes that run through this for the first 4 mins.

  • i was the same, at times it did nothing but i got it working. its VERY sensitive!! you have to hold it over the "hotspot" over the bass pickup, thats crucial. if nothing happens still, hold it a little closer to the string and bend the string with your left hand a lot if you want those harmonics :)

  • how does he get the bass to continuously ring like that? I know that something like a D-comp can keep a note for a long time but that long? And what about the ability to keep a fingered note going as well and making it swell and dissipate?

  • he uses an ebow. infinite sustain. im getting one in 2 days :)

  • I just got one a couple days ago and I can't get it to work on my bass. It works fine on guitar, though. I have no clue how Manring does it.

  • Pardon me asking, but why? I have never used an ebow and I would really like to use one on my bass

  • It's hard to line the grooves up with bass strings, and it takes longer to get the mass of it moving. It's a skill in itself.

  • Okay, like I said earlier I've never used an ebow nor seen an ebow up close. But after watching some of the stuff Michael does I understand how it works now. It's amazing how talented this man is.

  • this shit is kinda scary and i listen to heavy underground black metal!!! Its wierd as fuck. What kind of bass is that? I have so many questions!! This is all new to me it's freaking mind boggling!!

  • @sathan503 It's a Zon Hyperbass.Made by Zon for Michael himself. So that he can play with altered tuning on the fly.You have questions?I like to give levelheaded answers.I've seen Michael twice in concert and got to ask him some questions.

  • @gebass6 Oops!I was wrong.This is a Zon Sonus,not a Hyperbass.

  • motherfucker coffing right when the song ends ¬¬

  • How can you be THAT creative ????

    It's seriously amazing.

  • Dude... Pastorious is certainly pround of you! Keep up the good work.

  • I agree. =D

  • listen to it instead of watching it, and you'll find it funky boy

  • WOW!!!

  • Shitt hes so creative! damn i like it. the new wizard of bass.

  • Oh boy!!!!!! that was amazing

  • Alternate dimentions.

  • Mind blowing. Manring transcends the electric bass...it becomes something else.

  • The only way to stop the troll is to stop feeding it. Give him thumbs down, mark him as spam, whatever. But don't feed him anymore. It'll just make it worse.

  • shut up mr. pick bass geddy lee fan

  • @strongbadian4747 sometimes i love to play with trolls if i am feeling feisty. never take a troll seriously though, whomever fell for it! :)

  • Just ignore the idiot all hes doing is drumming people to get everyone fired up for no reason. I call hes a bot anyway. just ignore him/ it. Those strings are really not tight. He uses tenor strings, those are just about the thinnest strings you can buy for a bass: thin strings = lack of tension. And Michael is much better than to not know that tight strings ruin harmonics. He's not new to the music scene. No, im pretty sure, if you were there listening, everything was as it was meant to be.

  • but seriously i love the strumming in the middle. You might not like it because a) the sound of that bass can only partially be transfered through a recording. b) you have a bad sound system and cant clearly distinguish the rhythmic changes in the strumming or c) like you said you just plain dont like hte way this bass sounds in which case i say good day!

  • normally I like his strumming technique, but I agree that it is a bit sloppy and distonic in this composition.

  • A note on the tight strings thing - the tighter a string the more resistant 2 flex it is due 2 the greater pull against axial forces. This results in the harmonics being progressively detuned upwards - a thing usually called 'piano tone'. Looser & thinner strings exhbit less resistance 2 flex, therefore keeping the harmonics more consistent & balanced, so CHORDS sound better =) Basses typically sound crap 4 chords 'cuz the strings R much tighter than on a guitar. Try loose or don't bother.

  • Stop talking about things you don't understand. As a player of both bass and guitar, I can tell you that almost no matter what strings you use on either, it's going to be worlds easier to play harmonics on the bass than the guitar, and they'll sound infinitely better.

You aren't winning any friends or approval arguing your points here, give up while you're behind.

  • Oh right - I forgot that your opinion is the only one that's right. Sorry.

    Fucknut.

  • he's just typing the same stuff over and over leave him alone and lets let him think hes won or else(scared voice) he wont leave us alone

  • You must be a riot at parties. Bye bye now.

  • just shut the fuck up ok. You know nothing, listen to Les Claypool or other great bassists. Strumming is great. Stop putting your head up your own arse, and fuck off this video. Sorry but someone called "Deathrape 2000" doesn't sound to trustworthy, in what they are saying

  • who the hell are you to call that retarded? sounded like a bloody good rhythmic interlude to me and the use of flamenco-like strumming is really appropriate considering the title of the piece

  • On a fretless it's easy to adjust for the issue (just as pianos are slightly detuned to compensate), was it the strumming or tuning you were objecting to?

No, my opinion is not retarded, for the reasons I gave in my first comment. I like it, it's not about being a fanboy. However arrogantly you choose to make your point, it's not an objective opinion. I doubt a world class artist like Michael would care at all about your likes or dislikes, regardless of your penchant for false authority

  • Yeah! what samkeen said

  • ill let you keep your opinion thats its boring and annoying since everyone has their own preferences but its absolutely not uncreative. show me one other bassist that uses the strum like he does

  • sweet, a new Manring video!

  • Any idea why Manring uses two hyperbasses? How are they different?

  • this one doesn't have a bridge detuner

  • The one he's using here is based on a Zon Sonus as opposed to a Zon Legacy

  • and have you counted the zero fret ? ;)

  • El alumno supera al maestro, en este caso, tenia que ser usted el portador de la tecnica, gracia y habilidad de Pastorius a otro nivel. Excepcional, fenomenal y unico.

  • i wanna see manring and satriani...

  • ... make a baby?? ME TOO!

  • Nice painting.

  • I think that is a capo at fret 0 of 0

    =)

    Amazing song!!! Viva manring!

  • Manring transcends the laws of physics and imagination.

I just hope that with the hundreds of times that I have watched these videos put up by wizman440 something rubs off into my playing.

  • SICK SONG! this guy can't be from earth

  • Truly amazing but one question bugs me, is that a mute or a capo on there? if it is a capo, as a guess, what fret is it on?

  • i think it is a capo

it must be like on the 7th or 8th "imaginary fret" haha

  • surely a capo...

  • again:thanx sooo much for uploading all this great videos!!!

  • Another great piece! Thank you so much for posting these.

  • 3:50 it's just great!! :)

The Whole Video is a PIECE OF ART.. just think-hear-&feel it :)

  • Amazing

  • Wonderful! I think this might be my favorite of his performances.

  • the harmonics in the end from 9:32 are so incredibly beautiful...

  • Extra-Ordinary.

I suppose that's the only adjective that fits to describe this playing.

    Pascal

  • cough . . WOW! . . . thanks for your latest upload from this phenomenal loungeroom gig. Does this mean you have even more footage to share with us?! Truly AMAZING!
