Train engines are diesel and diesel ignition is by compression (not spark). The diesel engines it "timed" by when the fuel is injected. Late injection = late ignition it is not dangerous or harmful to the engine but it is poor efficiency (of course). All of these diesels are in fleets (trucks, trains, ships, tec.) and there is just so much shop time they can get. They get "scheduled" maintenance just like a car.

I'd be freakin out about this if was my first on the job. I don't know about diesel engines, but I don't think fire is supposed to come out of an exhaust line, but I may wrong in some cases.
I spotted a loco spitting fire from all its exhausts one day while it was starting to pull a long line of full coal cars. I was going to call 911 to report the loco on fire. But it died out quickly so i was just thinking it was dumping more fuel into the engine since they just started moving and it was not burning good within the engine. It was a very very nice display big fire ball and maybe twice as high as this movie.
