  • Absolutely brilliant - uncanny resemblance to Jaco's playing and choice of notes !

  • love the harmonics and the jaco pose at 1:21!!!

  • Bireli Lagrene has one of the greatest ear, he knows what sounds good, he is an awesome improviser but he is not the most creative in terms of composition and innovation

  • I could understand if Bireli could solo as well or better than most bass players, afterall the theory is the same. But his groove here is what's really incredible, that takes a lifetime to master!!

  • the guy can play jaco's stuff as well as django's ^^.

  • Great!

  • This is SO uplifting somehow, anyone agree? I can play this improv in my mind, for instance when doing the dishes, and feel great :)

  • That bass neck is so narrow

  • alto viajecito se pega

  • Bireli is the god of music

  • 5:38 oh my god!!

  • And used to be a cha cha!

  • Ho my god! Quelle claque. Magnifique...

  • Actually, I doubt Jaco could play with this degree of rhythmic virtuosity, so neatly, for so long; especially later in his career. Astonishingly, it is possible to imagine Lagrene is playing Jaco better than Jaco. Though, I agree, he isn't creating new music.

  • Now that's Jaco!

  • sounds like flatwound string?

  • nice

  • Omigod - so even if he never played guitar at all, he'd be this terrific bassist!

  • If I had any say so or opinion, I fully approve Birelli.

  • On peut ne pas aimer, par faute de goût, mais ce n'est certainement pas une chose à préciser car musicalement parlant, y'a rien à en redire. Question de style. Les gens ne connaissent pas plus que le bout de leur nez et les dobs qui passent à la télé. C'est une réalité...

  • i shit my pant's... awesome fingerstyle technique, excellent phrasing

  • enthusiasm is good

  • which is the last theme they play?? the one on 5:28 ??

  • @nikfore Freedom Jazz Dance by Miles Davis

  • Wow.

  • je peux peut-être comprendre la main gauche: le gars joue de la guitare et du violon comme d'une façon surhumaine... mais la main droite ?... Le doigté, la précision... quel talent !

  • Bireli played with Jaco. I think he is channeling Jaco that night. There is another part to this (the beginning) where he did teen town also. I cannot find that video anymore

  • get that sax player out of there, christ...

  • @leokasper7107 wot - you missing Kenny G?

  • @Comodusprimus No. I'm missing Paul Desmond, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Lester Young, Michael Brecker, and Wayne Shorter. Sax players who actually create MUSIC when they improvise.

I won't even charge you for that immaculate list either.

  • @leokasper7107 you're right to have your own opinion, of course, but I think in all honesty most of the players on that list would listen to this and enjoy it or approve of it. I hear a lot of Brecker and Branford in his playing.

  • Ohhh! That feeling...!

  • Awesome playing.

  • bireli is more a clone of Pastorius , it 's Pastorius . if you want a lesson ask him .

  • Freedom Jazz Dance Dude good tune man you defiantly have the Jaco licks down.

  • holy jesus, for not being his primary instrument, this guy can PLAY.

  • 19 people are afraid Hono will eat them

  • I like his bass playing more than his guitar playing/style.

  • me encantó!!!!!!

  • Bireli Legrene, a true musician.

  • Jaco would be proud of course, Bireli.

  • @Calimariyum Haha, how much of the Gypsy Project are you familiar with? He is an AMAZING bassist; Bireli is playing bass here, he's just giving Bireli some space.

  • @Calimariyum You're a bass player? Wow, I mistook you for an asshole. My mistake.

  • @Calimariyum Ok, you obviously havent seen the rest of the concert. The double bass guy was playing some fantastic bass throughout(This is the encore). Why wasnt he playing bass on this vid? The answer is obvious, two basses would just get in the way of each other harmonically and sonically speaking. I gather the upright Bassist understood this and adapted to what the track needed, rather than his ego or the one that you've projected. All these points were lost on you. How silly

  • @buckleyboy666 ok sorry for being an asshole. haha I thought that this was like the whole concert, and for a bassist to waste his talent like that, well it pissed me off. now that I have some context and understanding, well, I get it. :) Hopefully someone can link me to him playing the bass. I would love to hear that too. Honestly this is really great!

  • @buckleyboy666 ha, and this guy calls himself a bass player

  • @buckleyboy666 Check out SMV. Shows how bass players can get together.

  • @isacchudson great answer!! very fantastic album!! with three monsters!! victor marcus and stanley

  • @Calimariyum You sir, are not a real bassist in that case. There isn't a drummer, here. He's the upright bassist who was just filling in the beats. Music isn't about "playing it right by the book", it's about innovation, creation and art.

  • That's Great man!

    jaco4ever!!!

  • this sounds like a crazed idiot strutting mindlessly through a poisonous jungle.

  • 19 people loves iron maiden ..

  • @pierpinchio

Iron Maiden are amazing, and so are these guys! It's remarkable how similar Bireli sounds to Jaco.

  • It looks and sounds just like Jaco's bass. Nice job! WOW

  • awesome!!!!!!

    foooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is like a remix of The Chicken, mixed with bits of Come on, Come over hahah, excellent playing btw, very similiar to Jaco's

  • @jaqetall it seems to me a weather report's classic, "teen town" , Jaco played that riff in 8:30.

By the way is very very similar to Jaco...

  • @jaqetall Can't hear no Chicken? But Come on, come over is there for sure, straight from the song. Bireli played guitar for years with Jaco, this is a very nice tribute. Check my channel for a 17 minute purple haze/teen town jam...

  • @jaqetall And a LOT of Opus Pocus lol

  • lets see if can walk on water like jaco, oh wait he can

  • Where was this filmed?

Bireli is a great musician. There some great live stuff floating around out there of him and Jaco playing together. You can tell Bireli studied his style deeply.

  • Got feeling and no drummer was required, that's making music without limits!

  • Stars all the way ! INCREADABLE !!! :))) gus

  • Re incarnation de Pastorius et Django , ça beaucoup pour un seul homme .

    Magnifique ....

  • uhhhh

  • best thing i have ever seen in my life

  • Nossaaaaaaaa!!! de mais !!! Jaco deu Um Hurra no de alegriaa""""i

  • I cannot believe what I'm seeing. Goddamn I love this guy, what a spectacular musician

  • He even looks like Jaco the way he's playing, his posture, his face going along with what he's playing. Bireli is truly a master of music, top notch.

  • excellent!

  • fdx . . . . brutal

  • Cazzo...

    Bireli è un extra terrestre!

  • Wow, he is amazing!!!

  • Birelli is simply awesome doing this homage to his great friend and bandmate from there Stutgard Aria & Live in Italy releases. He was obviously paying attention to the late great master. Peace:-)

  • putain quelle dérouillée bon Dieu!

  • Jaco is the best, Bireli the second! others suckers!

  • holy SHIITTTTTTTTTTT

  • Sweet lick at 2:05!!!

  • I'm speechless... some people here are commenting on Bireli's act of "doing Jaco". Why don't you just listen and enjoy the music? Music is no competition, good music, bad music... but first, do you like the music? If yes, then it's good music. It doesn't matter if he's copying Jaco's style. He's not trying to BE Jaco, he just loves Jaco's music.

  • I reaally dont dont know what to think about bireli doing jaco, i dont know if its good or bad

  • And all of you who criticize Bireli are great creators of music and can afford being condescending, aren't you? The arrogance. And since when reading tabs, notes or sheet is an obligatory ingredient for value? The abilities don't matter, don't they? So we could say Mozart was also an imitator. After all that prodigal child was able at the age of 9 to perfectly reproduce a composition after one audition.

  • i like very good

  • Best Jaco imitation I've seen. Is that bass Jacos bass???

  • My favorite part is right after that harmonic chord at about 2:55

I love the way Bireli comes in with that bass line. It is so clean and it grooves so hard. Jaco could come up with some of the best groove lines without even shifting to another hand position. Killer stuff...

  • I wish he played Continuum,I always feel like I`ll cry when I hear that melody

  • Man,now i know,if you want to pay tribute to someone, learn his chops,Birelli did it!!!

  • I needs that jazz bass it has the mojo........

  • Wow Birell and the saxophone dude are really goin to town

  • What concert is this? I want it!

  • Bireli Lagrene, one of the big guitar monsters of gipsy jazz has now activated his "world domination" switch and is ready to fight Petrucci for Earth's leadership :) Mortals, prepare!

  • does anyone else notice his bass is BEAT UP? lol :)

Hes a beast though.. ive never heard of him before either but im very uneducated in the field, hah

  • QUE PERRRO ....

  • wow Bireli - what a masterful homage to Jaco! I'm so impressed.

  • Is he playing the bass line from Come on, come over? Really sounds like it.

  • Cool and all jazz guys cop licks and styles from each other so who cares if it has a jaco tone-they all play the same scales and interpret them apropos.

  • wtf guys he is awesome!!

  • Super bon musiciens a vrai dire !...

  • bireli is enormous!!!!

  • Tres bon, dans le style de Pasto ! il y a que bireli, qui approche le grand geni que etait Pasto !...

  • Fretless?

  • @teemingup yesss :)

  • @teemingup yes see at 4'00 there is no fret

  • @trenizi True true. I like what he does, tribute to Jaco or not. He is a craftsman!

  • I wish I was there so Bireli could see me standing and applauding!

    massive respect, that was fantastic!!!!!!

    ~lox

  • ugh i hate you bireli for being so good at everything

  • wow!! i had no frreakin idea!

  • Mr. Jaco Lagrene ftw!:D Not as good as the one and only, but man, i didn't even know Bireli play bass and than i saw this:P I'm hooked

  • what the hell...

  • Bireli truly swings and grooves ! Very good imitation of Jaco.Absolutely one of the best I have heard. Keep up the flag of Jaco !!!

  • A FRETLESS bass with BLOCK INLAYS?

    that is a sweeeeeet bass

also and most of all monster tone , awesome growl

  • These guys swing...!

    Bireli sounds GREAT on bass..!!

    Love that fretless..!!

  • flats or rounds? I cant tell. Doesnt sound bright enough for rounds to me.

  • suena delicioso el bajo c =

  • What DVD is this from? Any other dvds that you see Bireli play bass?

  • Bassisti tremateeee............

  • io godo non tremo

  • Brilliant play.. thanks..

My favourite bassist was Pino Palladino and Nick Beggs(i love the fretless sound and Chapmanstick also), but this was the most exciting play i ever heard.. Off course just after Marcus gone..

    Thanks for uploading..

  • @giacimasu E già....!

  • A bit more practice and he'll be pretty good.

  • mais que c'est bon !!!!!!!!

  • tenor sax looks like Brecker... lol

  • lol a saxophonist who smokes ^^

  • @Yao0o When you're French you ALWAYS find time to smoke. :P

  • @anadryantontine I know lol I am french myself but for a saxophonist it's hard!!!

  • que maestro...

  • da 3:15 a 3:20, che frase, ragazzi!!!

  • What a fucking pleasure to see Bireli playing Jaco !!!!! Great moment , thanks Bireli , ..After Django now Djaco :)

  • Awesome music!

  • simply awesome

  • boaa eeey wahnsinn

  • Who cares if he's playing Jaco's stuff?

    He has the groove

  • What a fantastic musician Bireli is, wow, double wow, and then some! :o)

  • jaco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sort de ce corps

  • Some of you may not know : Bireli does'nt play often as a bass player, he would kick ass as much on violin but he's a guit player.

  • grooooooooooovi!!!!!!!!fuk!that is MUSIC !

  • Amazing. He nails it.

  • well ya know Jaco taught him bass, for real.

  • 5:00 groove is epic

  • Friggin awesome. Didn't know he'd picked it up. Total homage to John Francis Anthony. If you can find it, check out a cd they did called Stutgart Aria. Very 80s sounding but it smokes.

  • ... good god ... thx to doodes like Birelli kepin up da memory of Jaco who cannot be forgotten ... as his music can't die ... thx for diz gem! ... d(^_^)b

  • Mossoma, mossoma ! Soul Jacossa !

  • well the bass starting at about 2:15 is pretty much come on come over. i find it funny that he sounds exactly like jaco, but i dont mind. bassists that copy him are better than most bassists who dont.

  • JACO LIVES !!!! FANTASTIC BIRELI !!!!!!

  • Who gives a damn if someone is mimicking Jaco's sound. If it sounds as good as this who cares, I mean the man playing is BIRELI LAGRENE, a legend in his won right. He aint no fly by nighter. Besides if you closed you eyes and was asked who was playing: who you gonna say it is? ....yeah exactly!! ;)

  • Is that Sax player like 9 feet tall?

  • @BillRayDrums

No, he's probably just Dutch, like me :)

  • Damn.....That's funkier than a three day old band aid...

  • the God of string instruments

  • effin sick.

  • je ne m'en lasserai jamais !

  • I don't know if I've ever seen an electric and upright bass in the same band at the same time. This band is really good.

  • You guys are all reatarded. THIS GUY PLAYED WITH JACO ALL THE TIME!!!! Jaco wouldn't care if he played in his style. Why would Jaco care if anyone ripped off his killer style? HE'S JACO PASTORIUS!!!!!

  • jaco had the tone that everybody wanted in a bass player

unfortunately to get that tone; players mimicked his style & licks

Jaco's tone obviously affected Bireli in this piece

we all miss Jaco, but its awesome to hear that tone live again

  • Wow...I had no clue Bireli could play such a nasty bass. It's rather obvious Jaco showed him a thing or two. It's also obvious that this is a tribute to Jaco. Yes he sounds and plays like Jaco because he was a good friend of Jaco's. This video tells me that Bireli acknowledges that Jaco was the best. Why else would he play EXACTLY like him? I think this is an awesome video. I'm further pleased Bireli can play bass properly; not nearly enough guitar players see the value in that.

  • It funny hearing critical comments about musicians who are all as brilliant as this. If Jaco couldn't handle people sounding like him, what can I say? Most musicians of his caliber simply know how great they are, and this won't affect them at all. It should be a compliment....don't you think? unless of course, they are that insecure, and that is another whole story....

  • Maestro Bireli!!!!

  • clearly knows the score, this is brill

  • half of these comments are morrons

This guy is really talented, not anybody can play like Jaco. He has lots of influence, and that's a good thing

And I wouldn't call that stealing. Any fretless stock jazz bass with rosewood, and the bridge pickup alone, would sound like jaco's

  • Jaco always said he was the best bassist to ever live.. videos like this just prove that. Is he coping Flea's tone? No. Claypool? No. Wooten? No. Jaco? Yes.

  • @20AceofBass11 That doesn't mean Jaco was the best, it just means that Bireli wanted to copy Jaco's sound. I don't know who is the best, I don't think you CAN say "X is the best" because everyone has a differing opinion about who is good and what would make someone the best. I might go so far as to say Jaco is the best Jazz bassist I've heard, though.

  • @LokixOwnsU You should check out Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, he's like the double bass version of Jaco ;D

  • The sax player needs to stfu.

  • Even if it sounds like Jaco, i like it alot. But then again. Do we need another Jaco. No

  • holy....wack!!!

  • Is that Jaco's bass?????

  • hey this is just crazy! He does a great job celebrating Jaco! and he has a good good sound too...I wish I could get a half of that groove out of my fender :)...weeell someday! XD I love it! :))))

  • @Skeedaddy91 its not the fender, its the fingers..

  • he and Jaco did a tour together, hello

  • I wish my bass sounded that good...

  • fantastic thank you for posting this & keeping Jaco,s legend alive

  • A not-well-cleaned fender fretless bass...

  • What kind of bass is that? Wow...

  • @johngwan Fretless bass. There's no metallic tone 'cause there are no frets.

  • Damn sweet bass :O must be old .. can't imagine Lagrene on a stock worn ;) does anyone know anything about it?

  • If people stopped mimicking the Jaco sound, almost every bass player with access to internet would loose a part of him/herself. U want that too don't ya?

  • @Samsgarden How selfish of them for mimicking Jacos sound, lets do all the things that you wanna do.

  • @buckleyboy666

    ha ha.

    missed the point.

Jaco wasn't particularly enamored at people copying his sound. Nevertheless, I'm not the one playing so I'm not sure how selfishness comes into the argument.

    fail.
