Has anyone checked out his right hand on the fret board? WTF?! Crazy bar chording going on there, Jules! Open tuning? What the hell...? Great delivery on this, Dylan tab notwithstanding.
Jules and the Polar bears were one of my favorite bands growing up in LA. Jules Shear may not have the easiest voice to listen to but give him a chance and see if you don't acquire a taste for him. I saw someone here call him "Dylan Light - VERY light". I know the comparison is radical but I can see it a little. In fact, if I were Dylan I'd consider it a compliment : )
Anyone else notice that at the beginning of the video Michael Penn is on stage with Jules. Michael is married to Aimee Mann - Jules Shear's old girlfriend. That might have been a little awkward... : 0
@2waterfall Plain awkward indeed.... just like knowing that your wife wrote very intense lyrics for someones else in the past... J or Jules.... for instance. Regards!
Lol, thanks for the affirmations....i thought i might be the only one wanting a quick bullet, but to be fair.......I am sure this guy has some good songs somewhere....!
If you like to read, E.M. Forster said that Beethoven's Fifth was the most sublime sound to ever penetrate the human ear. He was wrong. This is an inspired composition and performance by the then young Jules.
Wow, I can't believe a lot of the comments where people are comparing a solo male voice with bare accompaniment to the full band sound of the Bangles! I loved both versions. I was surprised how closely the Bangles followed Shear's original album version which was as thrilling as the Bangles version. The guy wrote a killer song AND his original version is definitive because the Bangles covered it so closely. Great job by both.
Very rarely does a cover improve an original but the Bangles cover of this song is a great example of a huge improvement, well done Suzanne you gave this song an edge.
I'm glad I caught this - don't get me wrong, I hesitate to criticize anything the Bangle's do, but I have never heard the lyric correctly from Susanna - it's "rehabilitate her".
"Most beautiful voices ever"? Huh? Since when has "flat" been "beautiful"? Where is his pitch? range? resonance? vibrato? I like some of his songs (solo and otherwise). Like them a lot, in fact. But that doesn't make him the world's no. 1 singer by any stretch of the imagination! In fact, I think I'll go and play "Brave Enough" and "Eligible For Parole" right now, but I certainly won't be spellbound by his vocal prowess!
just notice his playing style on guitar :D with the thumb barring over all the strings, so different!! no one plays like him, i dont admire it, i just noticed that.... it says he was learning alone, but also.... this way??? oh. so strange. guitar players know what i mean, this is impossible style. song is okay ;)
@dorkhunter1 Well you're a dork hunter not a badass hunter so that would explain your disappointment. Just Kidding! Are you a Jules Shear fan? If not how did you end up watching this?
god the bangles really did it justice ! He wrote an excellent song definately but the bangles gave it a whole new lease of life . The guitar sound and speed of the bangles song is just a lot more pleasing to the ear.Nuch kudos to Jules for the fantastic lyrics though..
@74posy The Bangles's version is fantastic, but the natural honesty of this acoustic version is...words fail me. Truly an underated talent is Mr Shear.
Jules is like Todd Rundgren....not in the main stream and very underpaid...but deserves much more - got no breeding, the only album I have ever had that EVERY song was good...a perfect collection.
Beautiful Jules Shear song (and easily my favourite Bangles record). Remember that i loved the Jules & Polarbears albums, so underrated and forgotten. Popsongs by a genius songwriter, and Good Reason are among my top 50 popsongs of all time
Wow, Suzanna Hoffs has really let herself go.

Its like Bob Dylan singing a song and we go crazy over it and yet, we love the Byrds' version. Jules Shear and the Bangles!

Completely agree. The Bangles give it a lift and make it perfect. Kudos to Shear for writing but his version is too low key.

Somewhat ironic to have Shear hosting Michael Penn. Jules was dating Aimee Mann about this time. Penn married her years later.
