@SingarDude One unique element of barbershop is that the lead is in the second highest voice. Also, in music, as parts get higher, they need to be softer. The tenor on the far left needs to sing softer than the lead (second from the left). If you've ever tried to sing higher notes, you've probably noticed that you had to get louder. If the tenor can be comfortable singing full-voice and softer than the lead, then they don't have to sing falsetto. Some do that easily, but not all the time.
@Skorne13 Well, yes, and no. You'll find a lot of barbershoppers talk with their hands, LOL. It's all part of being dynamic while performing... you wouldn't want to watch four guys, or a whole chorus standing like statues! As far as the 'squats' go, the commonly practiced stance for singing involves having your weight balanced, and your knees slightly bent. The rest is just feeling the music. ;)
All clean well-tuned major chords actually have a massively indefinite number of overtones on top of them, its just that normally only one or two of them are loud enough to hear, but if you know which notes to listen out for, you can sometimes hear third, fourth or even more overtones =P
Very entertaining!! Just a small criticism-- the bass is so powerful that he has a tendency to overpower the group at certain times (especially the ending). Take it down a notch but keep the enthusiasm!!
@grampacanuck lol no, no homophobia here. just saying i dislike the ridiculous movements everyone is doing for some reason, cause it makes em look stupid. i like the music though
Well, certainly nothing compared to the non-collegiate champions but a good group. However, one voice seems to stick out over the lead throughout (perhaps it's bass?) and their movements and actions are seriously leaning on annoying/Douchebag to the point where I tired of watching and just want to turn off the video.
Wonderful talent for a collegiate group. Better than a lot of the very experienced quartets. Every voice is disinctly perfect for blending with eachother. I hope they keep singing for a long time.
@davidmeye: Wack as in bad. They were WAY over-scored, they shouldn't have scored an 82. I mean, they just qualified to Internationals with a 76. How does that make any sense?
@mcpicklejar That whole international contest was a little over scored and the FWD prelims were a little underscored. Plus The Vagrants didn't have a great hit in their prelims.
@feelit4 I was clearing up to davidmeye what BBshopLOLZ (stupid ass name -__-) meant by wack. They aren't BAD, they're pretty good. I just didn't think ( and I'm not the only one) that they should have won the gold over Swedish Match, On Demand and Prestige.
@TenorJOE Nope, but I have talked to two certified music judges. Two judges that are almost done with training. And one retired music judge and they seem to agree with me.
Plus the it isn't like the judging system is on your side. I know Int'l was overscored and you say FWD prelims was a bit underscored but dropping 6 points is pretty drastic. Prestige and On Demand AKA Powerhouse now are 78s which is a 2-3 point difference from where they were at, which is a more reasonable difference. IMO
Yes baritones. As a baritone singer myself, and a huge fan of barbershop, I always complain that you never can hear enough baritone, especially whenever baritone parts are some of the coolest parts you will hear. I couldn't agree more with this comment.
Beautiful song - wonderfully sung. Didn't know this song but really enjoyed watching and listening. Thank you. I've loved listening to barbershop for YEARS - just never had the chance to sing it before. Only wish I could but never mind. :)
I hadn't heard this particular arrangement before, so I did a little guessing to figure it out.
Even with the background noise, you guys sound really good in the afterglow vid, too. That performance is more relaxed and funnier, and it's a nice comparison to your performance on the stage.
Thanks for your reply, and congratulations on your win!

@SingarDude I'm new to barbershop style but I believe it counters the bass in a way that when combined with
lead and baritone, creates the unique barbershop ringing sound.

It's very similar to the Four Voices style. If you were live it didn't sound like it does in a recording. You can't base everything off of a video.
