We share the same blood. It's funny you say that, cause I say it all the time, but I believe I never heard this one on the radio, picked it up from the 25 cent bargain bin, took my chances. Since Checkmate was co-owned by Chess, they certainly had solid national distribution, but maybe the DJs saw Checkmate and David Ruffin and dismissed it.
Yea, he was unknown. I make the point often that in the early days releases from Miracles, Mary Wells, etc on Tamla, Motown didn't mean a thing then. Might have just as well been Joe Schmo on XYZ Records. Check out my other two Ruffin songs, a little earlier than this one. Over the years I developed a real liking for his vocal style, right on through the Temps and post-Temps. That's something I share with Berry, I recognize good talent!
i've had a rummage through your channel, srercrcr.
bejasus, you've got some killer stuff here! particularly the valentinos' "i'll make it alright" (nicely similar to "lookin' for a love") and the top notes' "the basic things" (ray charles goes doo-wop)
ridiculous how these items slipped under the radar at the time.
This was a hit in Detroit. He also did a song called:Mr Bus Driver,it was a hit.

@extinct327 I have the 45, but my turntable is worn out. I can tell you it's not a very noteworthy song.

You can really hear Sam Cooke's influence on David's earlier stuff.

i guess david ruffin wasn't really a name in his own right in '61 (is that when it came out?)
damn shame!
still, from your part, i'd say that was 25 cents well spent!
