0:18 "You may recognize the sound of the guitar talkbox from the intro to Bon Jovi's Living On A Prayer..."
Haha Yeah right. Peter Frampton used it way before Buns Jovi. Jeff Beck is way better than Bon Jovi. Peter Frampton kicks ass. Bon Jovi, not so much, That is all.
If you're a guitarist, you can play video this a hundred times, and try to learn how to copy beck's playing...impossible. The guy's got 2 whammy fingers! :D
I always wished he'd stuck with Gibsons. His playing sounds so much sexier with that chunky humbucker grunt.
After the obligatory learning on nylon string fingerstyle (age 8 onwards) I got into fast flatpicking because my guitar teacher was a bluegrass session guitarist, and he even got me proficient in holding the pick in thumb and 1st finger and fingerpicking with the other fingers, and I played lead with a pick right through my teens and twenties but at 46, picks are again a distant memory…
@lahontanbruce from 1:42 through to 2:13 the pick is in his mouth and he's playing with his fingers. In this video he's already developing his pickless right hand technique and at times his left hand is producing a whammy bar like legato.
@Silvergoldstarfish, Yeah, we get so inured to that strat sound, and it takes a real master playing a Gibson to remind us just how much better they could sound: there's only just so much that your fingertips can contribute to the sound of your playing, and then it's down to your kit. Les Paul + Fender Twin is my all-time favourite combination.
I didn't start listening to Beck until '79 or '80....wish I would have started sooner!!! One of the most unique guitarists to ever cross the Rock genre.
@kristoscan Yes, for a studio version of this funked up fusion rendition (and a lot of other great fusion stuff, too!), check out the Blow by Blow album.
@TheF86Sabre It is a "54.....formerly a goldtop with p-90s. It was refinished and routed for humbuckers by a shop in Memphis, were its owner refused to accept it after the job was done. Jeff seemed to like it though!
first i saw the talk box or mouth bag was jon kay of steppenwolf in the late 60s/early 70s on like the mike douglas show. i thought it was strange then and i still do.

I read in an interview with him back in the 80s that he quit using a pick because he just got tired of dropping them.

wow, using a pick and no whammy bar. Cool!

Great post Stella !!! Early Beck with the Yarbirds was great music from the beginning !
The mid 70's Jeff 's playing like this gem was stellar electric guitar playing !
But no words can describe the Jeff Beck 's concert I saw last year !!!!
