@parch66 Unions, lack of serious competition for decades, favoring short-term profits to impress Wall Street, and the wrong sort of government intervention.
Clarksons explanation is bollocks. The reason Japan and germany started making loads of good cars is because of MASSIVE investment from the USA. Which went in to the car industry.
Britian on the other hand was crippled by debt to the US and only paid it back a few years ago.
Its not anti americanism it is merely a statement of fact. After ww2 america spent lots of money nation building in japan and germany. Britian had borrowed lots of money to pay for the war. Money, like i said, britian on recently paid back to america.
@soberek Me too. And from my experience behind the wheel of my stepsister's automatic Corolla, It's not much of an exaggeration. Know why Toyota's slogan is "moving forward"? They're so dull, it's the only way to describe driving it. Nothing really happens, you're just kinda going forward.
Back in 1972, a friend of mine lost in an accident his recently-bought Peugeot 504 and bought a Toyota Corolla, as a cheap temporary replacement until he got money to buy something better. It was the first of his five Corollas. He never had a break of any kind, in any of them. He said it was a no-worries car.
I think the Japanese have dropped the ball since this was made (2000 I think). No more Supras, NSXs, Celicas, or MR2s anymore, and the Civic Type-R is too fat too.But even if you look at their budget small and family cars (which is what made them so successful in the first place) and they're not exactly "budget" anymore, considering you're buying a relatively faceless car. Sadly it seems they've given the budget market to the Koreans and the performance market back to Europe. Oh well.
honda, 80s-earlly 90s, Were Smoking, Light weight cheap good looking civics, preludeds "fun accords" A cool looking Different MR Ferrari killer. 2000-through now..Civic got bigger and heavier..Had the S2000..Killed it off.. NSX is gone..
Toyota 70-late 90s...Supra..AE86..levin..Celica GTfore..Cresida..MR2(SW20).. Had got are hopes up with the FT86..then dropped the ball..
Nissan not so bad, 240sx and silvia are gone but there still running strong.
Koreans are picking up where the japanese left off.
Great build quality, outstanding reliabily... And not to mention the designs...
And this goes for all of korea, Hyundai, Kia, Protomotors the supercar company...Are Just raking in billions...and destributiing Some of the hottest cars in their class for a reasonable price. I use to hate korean cars...But now it's just up most respect for them, they have come along way.
Clarkson, much as I like his cracking sense of humour ( esp when he piss takes the Americans ) did his bit to single-handedly kill off what was left of the British motor industry. He never had 1 good word to say about any Rover. His French,American,German counterparts wouldn't dare dream of criticising any of their own cars, not because they are good, purely because it isn't the "done thing" to slag off your own country's products. It's called common sense.
How can you say that this man has made me laugh since i was young yer not eveyrone likes him but he says it how it is thats being british and look how many people now watch Top Gear hes a legend Clarkson he may be a bit opinionated but he knows his stuff and follows his heart when it comes to cars he also has the best job in the world i think i will always be a fan as im a petrolhead ;)
So what's killed the American motor industry?

@srspower You missed the bit about Britian being offered VW, and they didn't want it because they considered it didn't have a future.
