  • Wow. It' was advanced for its age AND cute!

  • Sucks.

  • ...I wish MY pet Dino could eat a tree...

  • He does that Dougie pretty clean..

  • that is amazing,

  • I still think the animation in this cartoon is unbelievably good. Talk about revolutionary.

  • this mankind is embarrassing... anyway nice post, thx.

  • This is wonderful you can tell they recycled some animation obviously, but for its time this is absolutely and positively without a doubt ahead of its time

  • Your great-grand dads must have enjoyed this

  • C'est incroyable...il a fallu attendre les années 1930 pour avoir des personnages aussi bien dessiné de la part de Disney... Ce dessin-animé a été une grande inovation technique et je comprend pourquoi!

  • this video is so crap. i have to watch it for hw for graphics!!!! so BORING!!!!!!!

  • @igabrielaleos You know what animation was before someone like Winsor McCay came along? It was an idea. It was a series of pictures with no expression or plot. If this is boring to you, then you're either a god damn retard, or you were born in 2000.

  • @StudioHizu Hi actually you were spot on, this post was made by my son , who had a graphics homework and had to watch this video, and indeed he was born in 2000! its hard for kids this age to really understand how technology has developed since then.

  • 3:06 FATALITY!

  • gertie, you bad girl! lawl

  • this was the first animation!! so cool!!!

  • @peaceoutsuckersss this was actually the first to have a character with a personality, the first animation was "Humorous phases of funny faces"

  • I'm listening to MGMT's "Time to Pretend" at the same time creeeeepy...

  • @SlapstickCoyote my guess would be sometime on Toonheads?? mid to late 90s if so...

  • I've been a fan of Little Nemo for a long time , but I hadn't actually seen Gertie. Pretty spectacular imagination he had.

  • she ate a tree.....

    mother of god

  • @geniusmrlai makes me wonder how much they knew about dinosaurs in 1914

  • @SlapstickCoyote They would play things like this in the late night Back in the early-mid 90s

  • Great! Eats like a cow and moves the tail like a dog! hahaha

  • Gertie's head are look like Kermit the Frog's head. And I saw her in the old video, "More Dinosaurs" with Gary Owen and Eric Borgman!

  • Gertie is so adorable!

  • Pretty impressive animation for 1914.

  • Anybody notice some inappropriate behavior at 3:00? lol

  • in glorious 120p

  • I wonder if anyone else noticed Gertie's cameo in a recent Simpson's episode (last year or so)

  • @aptspire i did!

  • 4:26-4:28 FOURWINGED LIZARD?! WTF?!

  • Ever see a dino cry? 2:08

  • what did the sea serpent do? XD i cldnt see

  • Man I give Winsor McCay props, this cartoon is about 5 mins, meaning he drew almost 7,200 drawing! O_o

  • Was the animator for this recruited for that new Terra Nova series? Looks so damn similair... Gertie had a $20mil budget too I bet...

  • @SlapstickCoyote Thats what I wanna know! :O

  • sdfghjkljhgdfsadef ITS SO CUTEE

  • Gertie is freaking evil! First she throws Jumbo and then she destorys the poor sod! After that she destroys and entire ecosystem by drinking all the water in that lake! She truly is the first Mr. Evil XD

  • 1:20 Everyday I'm shufflin

  • What? Did she just launch a boulder and kill a mammoth? THAT'S AWESOME. Gertie goes H.A.M.

  • ah cartoon network... when you cared about quality...

  • Watched this today in my History of Illustration class. This is freaking wonderful.

  • that was a small pumpkin. :P

  • that was a small pumpkin. :P

  • Imagine the endless reruns Cartoon Network had in 1914

  • Why is the dinosaur so evil to that mammoth, damn that dinosaur!!!

  • Is very cute

  • Mori de ternura <3

  • fenomenal!!

  • 24 no me gusta?? :S

    ignorantees!!

  • @BOYTILL no saben apreciar una buena animación

  • This plot is so random...

  • I saw this, and Winsor's Little Nemo today in my history of animated films course. I absolutely adore Gertie. She is such a sweetheart--though I admit her temper seems to be her downfall--poor Jumbo. xD

  • @farfromshowbiz He At Least The Cartoons Of Today Are Better Then Justin Bieber

  • I love to watch Gertie drink water and dance around. ha ha.

  • Gertie's theme rocks!

  • The reason that some people say this is better than more recent animation is that 1. It has fun with itself, exaggerating behaviors, and showing things that do not presently (or in some cases never did) exist.2. All of the characters are constantly in motion (takes more effort in longer cartoons) 3. It's not a derrivative "Disney" plot (not invented until Snow White) so it comes accross as original.

  • @gentlerat Disney's great!

  • @Firebrdsuite I agree, I just don't like the way that they came to define what kinds of plots and characters animated feature films could and could not do, especially in the 90s. These days, they get out of it by switching to CG for films like WAL-E and go to cel when making traditional plots like "The Princess and the Frog." I realize now that what I said in my last comment was unfair, as this is not a feature film. I have no problem with Disney shorts.

  • halirious

  • Wow old cartoons, you just cant beat them

  • I didn't realize that Gertie was such a jerk and so annoying.

  • Love the humor in her tossing the elephant into the water like that.

  • @kosmosuf duh? The comment is a joke, hence the likes.

  • This was on Cartoon Network? The only thing you see on there today is Adventure Time!!

  • A lot of today's animation may be technologically and technically more advanced, but none gives me that warm fuzzy feeling this one did. Gertie is adorablee xDD

  • i tought that mccay himself appears feeding him a apple?? where is that at?? i have a animation book that saids he does?? does anyone know what happened to that part??

  • @lisachineserooster McCay himself would perform on stage as the animation played in the background. He would throw a real apple at the screen, and Gertie would catch the animated version. Of course, only the animated parts are shown in this video. For the finale, McCay would go behind the screen and appear as his animated self on the projection as seen at the end.

  • 2011 and this still makes me smile...

  • That's over 97 years ago, since the cartoon was released in February 1914.

  • Though not the first cartoon, this is one of the first to recieve critical acclaim. Gertie is adorable; she has the emotional responses of a human child. I wonder how long it took Winsor McCay to make this? Probably a few years, with the extremely limited film technology of the time.

  • Long live Gertie the dinosaur!!!!!

  • R.I.P Gertie

  • In memory of Jumbo, 1900 - 1914.

  • Aww don't cry! here catch this pumpkin! lol!!!

  • For being unable to make a single sound, Gertie had quite a lot of personality.

  • @ Ninjaz93 I agree! Man, old cartoons were the best. ^^

  • This animation is so inspiring. Its almost crazy how much better it is than most ridiculous cartoons out there nowadays. The art of animation was new in the early 1900s and people knew how to use it back then! I absolutely adore this classic animation. :3

  • @Ninjaz93 Are you kidding? Do you have any idea how FAR we've come since this? Yes, Gertie the Dinosaur is an inspiration for animators today, but don't fucking insult them by saying a dancing dinosaur with no principles is technically better than the stuff that came after it.

  • @MollytheLookout Sure animation has come far, but at what cost? Yes, while it is technically more advanced, the quality of it, today more than ever, is absolute shit. Animation has been cheapened to such a sad extent.

So yes, A well animated dancing dinosaur with no principles IS actually better than the stuff being shelled out today. Maybe not as much in later animation eras (30s, 40s, etc.) but definitely this era, and perhaps some earlier ones. But judging by what you said, you seem content.

  • @MollytheLookout I'm an animation student right now, and you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. This dinosaur uses their drawings backwards and forwards, and is the quality of a first year student today. Any animation that does not use the 12 principles is a shitty animation.

  • @MollytheLookout

An animation student huh? *sigh* that explains a lot, right there...

You got a long way to go, and even more to learn, "student".

  • @MollytheLookout Right. The quality of a first year student TODAY. This was almost 100 years ago and this man was a pioneer to what you are studying today. You say an animation that doesn't use the 12 principles isn't good? What do you expect from this man? To magically know what exactly animation is to be like 100 years in the future? Jeez. Just enjoy the beginnings of animation and stop dogging it. I would expect a student to have more appreciation for this.

  • @Ninjaz93 Clearly you missed my previous posts. I wasn't "dogging" the quality of this animation for its time. I was defending today's animation to someone else who said that this is lightyears better than animation today. This film pioneered animation, and I applaud it. My entire point is that we've advanced since then.

  • @MollytheLookout I'm aware of who you were talking to and what you were saying. It doesn't add up. You say Gertie has no principles and any animation that has no principles is crap, therefore, you said that Gertie is crap, no? But, seeing as you are a student, I'm sure you know an abundance, and I'm not going to argue. I agree with MrAnon. We've greatly improved in animation, however, compared to some that do have your principles, I, personally, would chose Gertie over Cartoon Network today.

  • @MollytheLookout I'm a former animation student myself, and this DOES use a lot of the 12 principles. Slow in slow out, anticipation, secondary motion, most of them are there. I can't pick out any squash and stretch, but they're definitely mostly there. You're right that animation has made massive strides, but it's also made some leaps backwards, as people look for cheaper, easier ways to do it. A lot of modern cartoons don't use the 12 principles, either.

  • @MollytheLookout Also, you don't have to curse and assume I'm insulting all animation out there. If I didn't love animation today, I wouldn't be writing a paper on its improvements or be watching this clip.

  • JAJA EL MAMUT SE LA MAMO AL DINOSAURIO

  • beautifully drawn. this is remarkable

  • Lol the way they made the pumpkin so small was cute.

  • @amkd215 it was originally referred to as an apple but they later changed it to pumpkin to be more relative to Gertie's size :)

  • Cute character they should make a modern series for young children. It would be less annoying than Dora the explorer. Yes a silent character that doesn't repeat itself 20 times in a row.

  • @TheErikaliciosa Yes!! Definitly!!!!!!

  • It`s like a tamagotchi.

    Poor Jumbo.

  • Haha Gertie vs Jumbo GERTIE FINISH HIM!!! FATALITY!!!

  • Cryptozoology novel see video book trailer

  • at 3:43 Gertie's head looks a lot like Kermit the frog

  • @SuperMrCRAZYMAN Perhaps an influence.

  • Winsor interactively performed along with Gertie in front of the screen. Could this be described as the 1st example of Augmented reality?

  • i like how the animation goes throughout the entire scene,

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • This makes my eyes hurt

  • Gertie ate a rock, a tree, stood still against a sea serpent's attack and threw a mammoth by its tail into a lake. Gertie is badass.

  • This is amazing , I would never imagine being able to do something like that , let alone with a 1914 camera :D

  • wow this came out 100 years ago!!

  • those graphics were so intense.

    Better than Avatar

  • OMG SOOOOO OLDDDDD

  • @TiffanyWizz Just like your mum.

  • I cannot believe I just watched all of this.

  • THIS ISNT DISNEY ITS CARTOON NETWORK RETARD

  • Это ГЕНИАЛЬНО! HAllO for Russia! I`t is genius!!!

  • @farfromshowbiz fucking dumb shit! lol

  • gertie the dinosaur came out in 1909 and was actually one of the first animated films.

  • @DiggerD007 mccay was still doing vaudeville chalk talks back then but frequently used animated sequences on stage starting around 1911

  • Actually Gertie the dinosaur was one of the first animated films and it came out in 1909 not 1914.

  • REVOLUTIONARY!!!

  • Nearly 100 years after it's creation and this animation captivated me more than it's modern successors. . . how sad for today, but good for Gertie!

  • cartoonnetwork

  • awesome...live history

  • awesome...

  • Take a guess what brought me here. Yes, TV Tropes...

  • I've never grew up with cartoons in the 1910's, just ones made from the 30's to 50's and the 90's and some 80's and I'm born in 1991. I seen some 60's cartoons as well such as the Yellow Submarine back in junior high school.

  • Man I thought courage the cowardly dog was old school. lol.

(courage is my fav cartoon.) XD

  • can't believe i have to watch this and write 3 page essay about gertie lol

  • @espn2harry1 Yeah, because we wouldn't want to tear you away from Jersey Shore or MTV. Sheesh.

  • @Dallasdeckard i dont watch jersey shore lol

  • Never mind that sea serpent? It's easier said than done, man!...

  • gertie is the best

  • love his mind

  • this isn't too bad really

  • Gertie don't hurt jumbo... *mammoth is sent flying off*

  • All the new cartoon network shows SUCK!

  • This was not only the first cartoon to star a dinosaur, it was the first to use an animal of any kind as the star. Earlier cartoons merely used animals as supporting characters to human stars. I've seen bits & pieces of this in various dinosaur programs, but this is the 1st time I've seen the whole thing.

  • This music is so delightfully stupid. <3

  • just like the cartoons as today

  • This was before Disney perfected Cell animation for Snow White. As a result McCay had to draw the same background for EVERY SINGLE FRAME! The attention to detail and the massive amount of activity here is just mindblowing!

  • What happened to Jumbo

  • The quality of the animation was better than some of the early Disney. And certainly better than a lot of what pretends to be animation today. Not that I'm thinking of Beavis or South Park, mind you. I'm just saying...

  • 4:55 she's drunk dinosaur LOL awsomness

  • That was a pumpkin? Omg xD Huge dino.

  • Cartoon Network?

  • I was so frightened by this particular moving picture, I nearly jumped out of my bustle. That young lad, Winsor McCay must be a mad genius.

  • Animation sure has come a long way. These days most animated movies and television shows depend on CGI only, butfor me no CGI compares to animated cartoons.

  • They had animation...this good...in 1914...my mind has been blown!

  • @eMuse5 yeah look at those keyframes

  • cool

  • Man, I never heard of this until my animation teacher told us about one of the frist animations. I wonder how people back then reacted to this sort of stuff.

  • Gertie is such a precious dinosaur =D

  • lol serious munchies eh gertie?

  • never got bored to watch this vaudeville act (applied for 80 years ago when McCay made this) not kidding!

  • It's sad how many people haven't heard of McCay. He basically invented American animation

  • 2SIKK REMEMBER WHO WE ARE !!

  • Hellllo josh :)

  • i love this film hello RAJVIA how are today :)

  • I think cartoonists would just be blown away by how far cartoons and animation have come. Especially with the 3D animation that's apart of most movies now.

  • How cute. We have a statue replica of her in Disney's Hollywood Studios as a tribute to Winsor. He is what made Disney become a cartoonist. Such a cute cartoon. Winsor was a truly talented man.

  • lol i love it when she throws jumbo in the water

  • Gertie sure has some rhythm with her dance moves! lol!

  • @Freebleeper better than justin beibers

  • Haha that is such a GOOD cartoon!!! And so advanced for its time!!! To think that this was made less than fifteen years after the very first cartoon!! What a great find. :D

  • This film was made in 1914

    It's almost 100 years old!

  • I can't imagine having to re-draw this over and over and over again thousands of times! wow

  • every time the dinosaur moves over the background he has to draw it again? or he has some trick?

  • @zakopako82 This was made before cels (transparent sheets that have the moving parts of a cartoon) were invented so everything, even the background, is redrawn for each frame. So, yeah. That's why it looks so jittery and old school.

  • @zakopako82 -Yes he does. I was just reading that the cartoon has 10, 000 cells for the 5min b/c like musicsnafu said, the background was redrawn for each scene!
