@maxsam456 - most estimates place the amount of pandas in the wild as somewhere between 500 and 2000, which is a very modest number for an entire species - they are still classed as "endangered" by the WWF. Arguably, the threat of the death penalty has dissuaded most poachers from killing them - too bad if you are a asian black bear / moon bear in china, cos they get actively hunted and their paws and fur gets sold openly in many chinese markets

these pandas were bred in captivity, their numbers in the wild are tiny. Hopefully with places like this reintroducing them into the wild in coming years will help boost their numbers up in the wild

im not a huge fan of animals in captivity but researching them helps humans to learn more about their ways etc and the breeding program helps increase their diminishing population. If humans can learn a lot more from observing these beautiful creatures then it may just help them survive. Do you know if the Wolong Reserve has a better website?

@chickyluckcharm - Strictly speaking they aren't in captivity, but rather they are in a facility to assist in both their breeding & protection - most panda's in any zoo anywhere in the world probably was bred at Wolong. Poachers in China used to hunt the pandas, until they bought in the death penalty in 1997 for killing a panda. The facility is about two and a half hours drive up into the mountains of the Szechuan province. Not sure about other websites on Wolong, just go googling I suggest....

The Wolong Reserve near Chengdu is the premier panda breeding facility in the world, and covers over 200,000 hectares (is that enough space for the pandas to run around ?). And if the breeding program at Wolong didn't exist, then poachers would have hunted the panda to extintion before you were even born. You see the walls help keep the poachers out and the young pandas safe - or didn't you think about that ?
