@engaurd I dont think "PITCHFORKS" and "PLACARD WAVERS !" would work well together, it would be like a load of people protesting for bigger toast, or forks, I dunno crazy people would turn up dressed as Marmite "DEMONS!".
Well I dont know about you but I feel sorry for the dog, it doesnt know any better, did it find it's ball?.
The idea is that for surveillance and imaging you need one camera and you get a 360 degree view. With a traditional helicopter or airplane you would need to make multiple passes or have more cameras to get the same view.
It is a monocopter. Right now they are academic. The idea is that they are more efficient than a helicopter. It's just another way of doing things. The less parts you have the less that can go wrong really. It can actually fly waypoints etc. it's not what the video makes it look.
@leviterande why would u need that, just go get the weight of a maple seed and wing span and do the math. E.G a maple seed falls at a certain speed based upon its weight in relation to its wing which slows the fall so if u increase the spin of the wing u will get lift or hover.
The seed weight relates to the span of the wing else it would fall straight down so then consider air resistance also.
Its not hard to understand alot harder to explain I guess.
It looks cool... but I can't think of any actual use. It is too small, too loud, can not carry any weight, etc. Maybe it can carry explosives...but rather just a very expensive toy.
Guess what? This "idiot" clicked the link and now has gathered more info on this series of projects than you, the "smart" one will. Don't be so paranoid next time. Click the fukking link...
Cheap rapid deployment drones to provide battlefield intelligence, radar and communications jamming, scientific research, airspace monitoring, remote emergency response communications... c'mon already! Remember UAVs were dismissed as toys, now they're taking all the human risk of USAF / relief / intel / etc missions.
Don't just sit there and criticize... get up and be proactive... suggest ways in which these guys can help improve our world.
Okay Blaxpear fair enough, I did not clarify my comment very well on reflection. Dad was an RAF pilot so I grew up in the forces. I can see the benefits of UAV for emergency services and ground troops. What I should have asked is what the "single leaf" model has over the other models already in existence. I have four round wheel that work great on my car and don't need to fund someone to invent an almost round wheel that almost works as well. It was not a slur on the people involved either..
you're foolish. those rc aircrafts cannot be easily carried by a soldier into the battle field. this thing has only one wing so its easy to slide into a backpack.
yea, but the objective of these is to make them small enough to carry in the backpack or even the pocket. thats vastly different than carrying them in a suitcase or in a truck.
Great work guys. More innovation is what America needs. Too many fat, lazy, uneducated folks have gotten too happy with the way things are, while the rest of the world moves on...
Human progress is marching on. Our specie continues to innovate across the entire globe. Creativity and progress have never been bound to a single piece of land, skin color, profession, age or nationality. Nations a figment of the human mind.
We will NEVER stagnate. No matter where we are, you will find us pushing the limits that keep us from achieving our dreams.
There are so many minds innovating in all groups wherever humans are found. If you look, really look, you'll see us.
It's just mind-boggling that something with just one wing can fly! This reminds me of a similar UAV design, I forget who makes it, but it has an open ring in the center, and when spinning, it sort of camouflages itself as a vague blur.
I want one

the university of maryland also has some pretty advanced monocopters.

I think the intent of the final 2 - 4 inch size is to that that terrorists won't see it. It will just fly in discretely, and do recon.

lol I can just imagine a terrorist seeing that and thinking "what the flaming fuck"

nope. I don't want to generate money for whoever setup the redirect even if it is $1 or less. i found the real link using google. f*ck spammers.
243rf34ew 2 years ago
Why ?
What for ?
How much have they spent doing this ?
What makes it unique ?
No good as a human platform
No good as a camera platform
What happens in a cross wind
What payload can it carry
Clever but at best it would seem very niche in its applications unless someone can share what they are without collecting a bullet.
Compared to other tiny UAV its movement tends to attract the eye to it as you see significant movement so no visible stealth benefits ?

please, this is so lame. The backyard RC aircraft people are more advanced then Lockheed Martin
and without the trillion dollars of tax payer dollars.
