We take better care in the ambulance.. that was poor. In all fairness though, the sats were bad and if they didnt do something the baby would be dead anyway. It easy to comment unless you are there. Looks like an emergency to me. Agree with the antibiotic comment above.
I was there teaching and the one who inubates in 3 sec. This is not about the procedure but to point out how infections occur. People forget what mistakes they do when they intubate and think they are saving lives but introducing infection defeats the purpose. So take care. This video recording was done in 1980s.
@medifix In Australia, we practice " QA " quality control - in ICU, trauma, or elsewhere. There are set procedures to follow, and even though it's an emergency situation, every effort is taken to minimize the inherent risks involved. There are no simple solutions, except vigilance, reporting, and timely intervention. Finally, more QA audits and incidence reporting. Eventually if you are shamed amongst your peers, the time will come you will get the message or look for employment in another.
some of these thing really happens in actual but this is the only time Ive seen someone get intubated while the doctor isn't wearing gloves..
provided by the fact that the airway is more important than the concern for infection in that moment, still, the setting is in the hospital..THERE SHOULD BE SOME GLOVES to protect both..especially that the pt is an infant..usually nicu is strict and suppose to be strict in avoiding infections..
I agree that more meticulous care needs to be taken with "clean procedures." However - this seemed mlike and urgent situation and O2 sat is more important in that moment. The respiratory tract is open to air and is in no way sterile which is why intubation is not a sterile procedure. Superbugs come from overuse of antibiotics - not from clean procedures.
Sorry, superbugs don't come but have been created due to antibiotic abuse. They are colonized in 30% of healthy adults and children. Only thing we as doctors can do is to try and reduce them enter and colonize in the body. (Please read CDC publication about CA-MRSA)
3 second intubation. I take my hat. Clearly someone who knows what they are doing.
I also agree with infection control. We take care with needles, why not here! Made me take extra care and not get complacent. Thanks :)

Thank you for agreeing to what goes on. Please note this recording was done in 1990, and not many wore gloves.
People did not take care much about infections because antibiotic was available. MRSA spread was rampidly spreading in SCBU.
MRSA is colonised in the nose, so the tip of ET tube will get infected when inserting and carry them into lungs resulting in pneumonia.
I have published this to show what we must not do if we need to reduce MRSA

I agree, but there is no alternative. Some doctors are good and perform the technique very fast others don't nor do they give-up.
