same thing happened to me, on a wave probably half that size, my 5th time ever surfing, me and my friend paddle out, CAN BARELY duck dive white water, let alone the face of a wave, we get past a few white water right in middle of the set, last thing i remember before going over, just going up the face, thinking i broke through the tip of the wave and then sitting up looking down the wave like oh nice, OH SHIT lol, popped up next to my bro, signed then paddled for the next wave lol

my friend convinced me to paddle out onto 3m swell at smiths reef.. and guess what.. pro's were there such as matt hardy and a lot of underwater cameras..

I paddled out and once i got out i was really tired so was trying to rest and then i looked up and saw a pack of people paddling out and i just shat myself because I saw a massive set rolling in and i was in the middle.. i duckdived and ended up on the shore much like that wave..

I would definitely not give someone that advice. If you paddle your butt off, you're gonna be totally exhausted and have to wind up holding your breath because there's ALWAYS another wave waiting for you just when you think you've made it lol. The guy should of pushed through the face halfway up or have duckdived in the flats right before the wave crashed on top of him (providing it's not shallow).
