I didn't have enough to add this so I have to say, The drums are AWESOME in this song and the Brass, Oh My God, Does it really get any better than this. I just need to thank CHICAGO for this one especially and the so many more you gave us fans. Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You!
1 Dislike, Well that's bullshit, Obviously somebody didn't like thier Old Days. So many good comments. I loved this song back in the day and still do. Really takes me back. Good times with family and friends. Most of my family has passed on and friends have moved on but hearing this makes me smile. Makes me think of a great time in my life. It's a real good 3 minutes and 35 seconds, Only bad thing, This song ends. RakyMaky, You post some really good tunes, I had to Subscribe, Thanx 4 the post!
Reminds me of growing up in the 70's having fun with my siblings and limited worries and anxiety as a kid. Spent a lot of time with Grandparents in which fond memoires were formed. There are people in the world that families have become disconnected. I don't remember disconnection in the 70's I only recall peace, love, and happiness. Too bad the world isn't like that today.
You can also add big, wooden console TVs, shag carpeting, bungalows w/picture windows, station wagons-NOT SUVs, colored bathroom fixtures & colored appliances, everything was made in the USA or Canada-NOT CHINA and no pathetic E-Waste events either. I really miss the 1970's and 1980's really bad.
Me? I'm white so I'm to blame no matter the person I am.
Racism today is blame the whites- & I know what that feels like.
When people start to listen to Bill Cosby & Herman Cain we might get through this; but as long as people look for a hidden agenda they'll hurt everybody.
If people looked at themselves they might find the truth.
Back then the music was great & we also knew The Commodores, Earth, Wind & Fire and ALL the good music.
@ntvtxn62 I too am anglo(1/2 German) &last name is Jewe*** so yes I didn't get racism till many yrs l8ter. your words leave me"Without words!" Thanks!!
@ntvtxn62 NO. Only Whites In America are to blame! Dispite that the Brits (Who's colony we were) Being first to outlaw slavery, Or that Black African Warlords Took the tribesmen from competing tribes and sold them into bondage, OPENLY TAKING PLACE UNDER THE FRENCH FLAG! 80% were sold to SOUTH AMERICA And the "Spice Islands" of the gulf yet It's ONLY HERE blacks EXPECT restitution for imprisonment THEY PERSONALY, NEVER ENDURED! AND WHITEY FOUGHT TO FREE them, mostly,It wasn't blacks.
Great song & memories (yes, I danced alone in my room cause I felt like a geek!).
@1QuikTransAm- the racism part- back then the people fixed things, kind of like in Navy Diver w/ Dinero & Gooding, Jr.- someone wants to succeed & after thinking it over someone else takes the stand with him. Today it's a money thing & what will people do if the NAACP & the other groups aren't needed any more. Washington too- they have their caucuses that work to keep the problem going.
Hey Roque, love your post,,,and trying not to be the song police, but YES indeed we did have FM radio in the 70's, it came out in 68,,,70 model cars started featuring it. I have a 1970 Z/28 all original, including the delco Am FM stereo..
Its hard to impress on younger kids how much this song encapsulates an entire Generation for Boomer kids. You hear this song and from Ed Sullivan to the start of the 80's flashes by in 2 minutes. Radio back in the 70's was AM. There was no FM. And this song was everywhere back then. I feel like crying. Anyone else feel the same?
I hate people correcting others on their own feelings a song brings....shut up!....I hope my little girl remembers me playing this in 2011 and it reminds her of 1st grade, Justin Beaver and any thing she wants to think of...Pankow may have had his own memory when writing this song, but he wrote an open ended brilliant song....Im gonna play it now for my youngest, she likes to dance.
...Your wanna be music snob statement "You do realize that the songwriter (James Pankow) is referring to growing up in the 1950s, correct?" makes you sound like an old wife. Step back, reflect and think about what you just wrote.Tigergrumman was reflecting about his old days in the 70's when the song came out. J. P. would never write a song in the 70s & refer to the same decade as old days. Why condescend another person with "You do realize" and end your statement with "correct?"
You do realize that the songwriter (James Pankow) is referring to growing up in the 1950s, correct?
Pankow said that the song is a nostalgic piece about his childhood:
"It touches on key phrases that, although they date me, are pretty right-on in terms of images of my childhood. 'The Howdy Doody Show' on television and collecting baseball cards and comic books."
Vocalist Peter Cetera apparently hated singing the song in concert as he did not like the Howdy Doody show as a child
A Schwinn? Could not afford it. Back then, the Schwinn, was like a BMW - price with a long options list.
I had a generic Toys R' Us "special" dirt bike - until I was able to afford the Mongoose!
We rode like bandits all night long in the summer time. We owned all the off-road trails back then - including up in the hills. The Mongoose, was like a C6-ZO6 Corvette. Top of the line, "blue collar" dirt bike.
Sorry, but Aerosmith is the most successful American Rock band. It's sold one hundred and fifty million albums. Chicago has probably sold seventy million. Which is a lot, but not quite as much.
Oh how I connect with this great song. Riding my pieced together Schwin bike with a sissy bar , banana seat, and ape hanger hadle bars. In my young mind there was no such thing as racism, hate, dishonesty. Your biggest worry was trying to get some neigborhood girl to dig you. Sure do miss the 70's....
@1QuikTransAm I miss the 70's also, greatest music ever,my God,you could even understand the lyrics and just hearing them brings back TON's of memories........
Yep - the 70's, in my neighborhood, was peaceful, quiet and easy going. I grew-up in a neighborhood where the color of one's skin was immaterial at best. All the kids hung out together: black, white, asian, hispanic - it did not matter to any of us. It seemed like the days lasted forever.
If the World Wide Web had been available in the 70's, you would see none of the raw hate that you see today in places like Youtube. Young people were respectful and mindful back then.
@TigerGrumman I don't want to be a debby downer here, but I really doubt the youth has changed that much since then. There's places with segregation and hate, and places with out any of it, but can you honestly say the 70's were a time of peace for all races? It's always been there, even if you weren't directly affected by it, and it'll be a while before it disappears entirely (if it ever does).
@TigerGrumman You're absolutely right.I'm too young to have been old enough back then, but I totally understand.I really love this music, and it goes hand in hand with honest childsplay, respect, and digging great music in general....happy holidays!
Tribute#2: This song is also to Sheriff C.T. Woody,Jr (RPD(ret.)) and Det.Sgt John Harris(RPD(ret.)). They were unmythical legends of the Richmond Polce Department. Their commitment to the integrity and honor to the badge, as well as their service to the community, is never to be forgotten. This also includes the fallen martyrs of the RPD; who are gone; but never to ever be forgotten.
This song (from me) is in tribute to the Richmond Police Department (Richmond,Va.): This song came out when I was a student at Mary Munford Elementary School (Fall 1973-Spring 1974). This song back then, and even now, reminded me of the officers of the RPD; the brown uniforms, the AMC patrol cars, and their service to the community.
@BobsB0y it's the cycle of life my friend. I was born in 1975 so I can't recollect the 1970s very well. But after all one must think of the context here of this song, the writer had the same frame of mind as you when thinking of growing up in the 1950s or perhaps even the 1940s. It's just how life goes and living in the past deprives us of today.
it's ironic. this song came out in the 70's and he's clearly talking about the 50's. but we who were young when this song was out long for the 70's.
