a superb english version of the two american standards of the great depression-imagine what dreams were realised when these songs blared forth from the nearest phonograph!
You know... I may sound antediluvian (and I am not ;)), but I don't think any other version available - starting with the most recent ones - can really compare to the tremendous vibrancy and perfection of this one. They just don't seem to have the "joie de vivre" that emanates from this one.
Jack Payne's records do have a big almost 'film studio orchestra sound' which is one reason his records sound so good. The old valve Radiogram reproduction adds distinctive sound too.
I second both the other comments.Love the "Getting to be a habit with me"in particular, with the very English vocal.I always here Bebe Daniels singing it in my head and Gandhi appearing!!!
Not sure on her last movie, but do know she and husband Ben Lyon came here to England and were very popular on thr radio, namely in "Hi Gang"and "Life with the Lyons" for many years.
Bebe Daniels (1901 - 1971) came to Britain in the mid 1930's with husband Ben Lyon (1901-1979)to star in West End productions, they ended up staying in the U.K, as much loved entertainers.

".I always hear Bebe Daniels singing it in my head"
That's an enviable mental condition. Hard to believe Bebe started in silent movies.
