I'm from England but I was lucky enough to catch this tour in Toronto. The speech at the beginning is the coolest, most laid back piece of rebel rousing that I've ever heard in my life. Tom Petty is so cool that if they ever cremated him he'd actually put the fire our. We have to love him really - we have no choice in the matter. Peace to all.
@LerxstDirkandPratt You are SO right. Lucky that you were there. I always loved Petty even when it was "un hip" to be into him. He is so cool he rides out all passing trends and is just FOR REAL. I love him even more after watching the recent 4 hour documentary on BBC. Pure genius. x
I saw Tom Petty with 'Dylan', 1984/85.'RENO/NV. yeah! rocked......Dylan sounded great with Petty band. 'Hey', pass that thang over hear ya 'Bogart'. heh heh
Should never have left Reno. Best little city in the world!
Great cover and true to the original. I saw them around 1983 and as an encore they did a perfect version of the DC5's "Any Way You Want It". I love it that he has an appreciation for the early stuff.
because most of his unreleased stuff are songs made by other people and those people would be happy to hear tom petty and the heartbreakers singing them
Fantastic. I suppose the thing about the Sixties was that genius songs were put out by bands that didn't have the amps power or live skills to blow the house down. Petty knows his heritage and how to put it over...this is wonderful but the original is still unbeatable.
Oh man, this has to be THE greatest cover version of this classic song. Loved it when Count Five released it in 1965, and TP & his band just kick the living shyte out of it. Fantastic! I have to find the concert DVD this is on, NOW. Thanks for the great blues harp playing, Tom!
Tom's always good, but the original version by the count five was better, simply because they are the original songwriters and musicians who brought this psychedelic masterpiece to us.
You're kidding, right? Stan just nails the vocal on this '60s psychedelic classic. TP and the Heartbreakers improve every song they cover. Mike Campbell's nod to The Yardbirds on his guitar solo is especially nice.
I now own all of their albums, including Mudcrutch, their concert this summer was amazing, all I am listening to these days is TP&TH, from their debut up to Highway Companion. Oh yes, and the DVD, 'Runnin' Down A Dream' is highly recommended, if you haven't seen it yet I suggest going out and purchasing it tomorrow (only available at Best Buy). If you're not already, you'll become a fan of this great band for life. There is only one TP&TH!
Phenomenal, I cannot give this proper superlatives. I have been a TP&TH fan since 79, and the thing is that for the last six months I've become an even bigger fan.
incredible hearbrekers, even better than the count Five's version, great solo by mike Campbell with Rickenbecker, the quintessential psychedelic guitar.
This video is the best ive ever saw of petty live i mean all of his work is fuckin awesome but this man blows your mind ive never been disappointed in any of pettys work he cant fail in anything he makes woohoo !!!!!
Omg - is there a better example of TPATH displaying that they LOVE rock'n roll and LOVE what they do? This is one of the videos that left me vaguely disappointed when I saw them 6/18/08 in NJ. Not that it wasn't a good concert but they primarily played major hits. I love it when they go a bit "out there". There was no Bo Diddley tribute either...
But nothing can knock TPATH off that pedestal imo. Love Mike Campbell! And check out Tom's radio show on XM satelite, just great!
I really, really, really miss Stan Lynch. Steve Ferrone is a great drummer and all that, but Stan had personality. And a good voice, too. The unsung hero of the Heartbreakers in my estimation.
Cool... Stan was no doubt a big effort to The Heartbreakers...
