"Yeah, yeah, yeah", everybody says, "he ripped off Beethoven!", including my piano teacher, and I tell 'em that I don't remember Ludwig ever singing it ". What he conveys in this song with his powerful crooning ability is the old fifties feeling of the last dance number in the high school gym and the iceing on the cake is when the big "change" comes towards the end, goes boldly where no man has gone before and literally blasts it "vocally", and not on Ludwig's "Boesendorfer", which not a sausage
@nutmeg4808 He didn't rip off Beethoven.....he credits Beethoven on the album sleeve notes..He never hid the fact that he borrowed Beethoven for the chorus.
now this is a song to hold a woman to. of course you both should be lavishly dressed underneath sparkling lights of one kind or another. one of my countless regrets is not swaying an old girlfriend to this song when we were together, as we are both huge Joel lovers. but seriously, for me it's a woman, but holding anyone close to you to this tune is a must do before your dead.
ha, this has some special memories, walking along a moonlit beach road with a girl I met on holiday. She asked if I could sing any songs, this was the one song I used to sing in the shower, so I sang it to her and woke a few people up in nearby hotels :) she and I had a whirl wind romance thereafter, one that changed things forever :) a brilliant song, still makes me smile
This is one badass song!!! I swear to god I will track down and bring down hell fire upon ANYONE who dares to press that dislike button, just try me!!!
I've been trying to teach myself Pathetique 2nd Movement... After about 5 minutes of practicing, I thought "Hey, this sounds familiar". Sure enough, look at who cowrote this song. ;-)
a lesson learnt! we should have stuck at being friends! falling in love clearly was the worst thing i could have done but i did and then married him. 3rd wedding anniversary today and he didn't even remember that, let alone anything else! whilst this night is lasting forever its because i am alone yet again!!
The only song from Billy Joels first 10 Albums where he didn't write the lyrics and music. While he wrote the lyrics, the chorus music comes form Ludwig Van's sonate #8 Pathetique, 2nd movement
Thank you so much, cesarapolinario. I appreciate your kind words. Yes, the "Greatest Hits" CD is one of the best ones to buy; it has all Billy's greatest songs. And Billy Joel is the most talented, most precise in writing lyrics! I agree with you!
I hope he makes another album as well! I'd buy it even if it meant sleeping in line! ^^

The song hasn't aged well, and yet the second verse is still a killer. Love the doo wop harmonies.

the chorus is an exact copy of chopins pathetique mov. 2 Billy Joel sure likes Chopin. Its a great tribute that shows were he comes from.

@hemicuda572
It's Beethoven's pathetique, not Chopin's.

Beethoven quotation?
straightshots 2 years ago
The chorus is set to Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata and Billy credits him for that on the sleeve notes for the An Innocent Man album.
