This scene always gets me, Maxine struck the right nerve without even really knowing she was. Though when you consider the reason that she really doesn't want Hoyt with Jessica it makes her all the more selfish. I agree that Maxine was harsh, but I can't say that I hate her for it. What she did was cruel, but she did it for her son.

I'm not saying I would do something like that. I would be proud that my son got a nice girlfriend like Jessica, but Maxine is acting--a little--on fear for her son.

So I don't hate her for it, but I dissapprove of how she handled it. She was wrong to do that to Jessica and all she succeeded in doing was creating a gap between her and her son.
