  • For all of those who criticize the astronauts for using the Genesis account because it violated the 1st amendment, check this: the U.S. constitution does not extend to the cosmos and to say it does makes it universal--which it isn't. Nothing could describe the scenario better than the Words of the Creator Himself.

  • There is so many questions and so little answers. I am a young man and i dont care about Lady gaga or Justin BIeber. I want to live my life so when i get older i want to fell satisfied for finding some of those answers by my own way. Don't be scare of death. The life is simply a cycle. Don't forget that everything is eternal. As the author said: "From my rotting body, flowers shall grow and I am in them and that is eternity." How simple. :)

  • Know i realize how minor our problems are. Work, school, making a career even love and many many more everyday issues. Do we realize how small, how insignificant our problems and existence are? Just live your life, don't kill, don't steal, don't lie. There is much more important question. Sometimes i ask myself why we are living, why we are alive, is life worth living it, what i will become tomorrow, next month, year? Are we alone? Is there other worlds with a spark of life?

You may criticize them for reading from a book that tells you to stone those who don't believe in God, or that they're stupid because they believe in God, but imagine being in their shoes at that historic moment... I would be so amazed and essentially in awe I don't think I could describe it in words.

  • If only you fellas knew the process through which they came up with the idea of reading from the Book of Genesis. It was meant to be all-inclusive and did not discriminate. Its a shame that we still have so much in-fighting and no tolerance for other's beliefs, views and cultures, despite having the same, protective mother , Earth. If we could just see what Borman, Lovell and Anders saw and feel what they did, our lives will change.

To all the haters out there, read up a little about the apollo missions, the crews did everything they could to solidify the fact that this was an achievement to be shared by all mankind, regardless of race, religion, or nationality. pay close attention, the last lines by Borman were god bless ALL OF YOU ON THE GOOD EARTH

I also wasn't aware that the astronauts were so unintelligent as to think all the people on "The Good Eartth" were either Jewish or Christians. I'm glad your straightened me out. Here I was thinking that they were inspired by the event to appeal to our shared humanity. Instead, they were actually early Tea Party idiots. Thanks. ;)

  • The Bible has incentives, explicit incentives, to killing people with stones if they do not believe in the christian god, to kill and a man and woman if they had pre-marriage sex, and many other incentives to violence and discrimination. Deuteronomy 13:6-9, Isaiah 13:15.18 are just a few examples. Reading something, anything, from this book, even if not taken literally, i see as the only mistake on this important event for the whole of human kind, not all of wich is christian or religious.

    but the reading that they said wasn't offensive, it was inspiring, sure there are bad parts to alot of things doesn't mean we throw it all out entirely, some of the greatest epics involve horrible deeds, the fact is the bible is the most influential piece of literature ever written. like it or not it's part of the culture and is completely appropriate in the context that the astronauts used it

When the first people reach Mars, i want to know that it's been done in ALL of our names, not just your imaginary sky dictator. Therefore, the State that conducts a Space mission to a celestial body is responsible for commiting itself to that principle of common heritage. Personal religion is not common heritage.

  • @youtoobeiz4loosers it's a cultural thing, but the two go together quite well, a story of the creation of the earth while viewing the earth from another heavenly body for the first time. while the story was inaccurate, it's still an appropriate thing to do considering the audience and the faith of the astronauts themselves

  • It just seems silly to associate something as grand and magnificent with leaving planet earth with something so quaint, arbitrary, and naive as taking the bible literally.

    Maybe they meant it poetically in order to express the grandeur of what they saw, but I'm worried such metaphorical language fell on deaf years given the stupidity of the general American public.

  • I'm thinking that this, perhaps, is the most historic few minutes of the 20th century, maybe of all time. Man actually surveyed the Earth from God's perspective for the first time. Remember this was before the moon landings, the very first time we had seen pictures from the far side of the moon and we were able to look back at our tiny, insignificant planet. No one truly knew what was there until then. It took enormous courage and bravery to get us there and I, for one am grateful. God bless all

    The mission was to look closer at the Moon. One photo made us look back.

    Cronkite, in German, means sickness.

    Apollo 8, and Walter, helped us heal.
