San Francisco is definitely less insular than most American cities. It is tolerant, cosmopolitan, and open-minded. And there are many foreign influences. While I was there, I spotted statues of Sun Yat Sen, El Cid, Joan of Arc, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Carlos III of Spain (among others). This is a very unusual display of internationalism in a country where nationalistic fervor is serious business.
@klalkity The down side is that housing is REALLY expensive. I just moved out here from the mid-west and my rent tripled for a slightly smaller apartment.
Yeah I think this is my fear in the U.S., that the places that are reasonable to live are going to be pretty pricey! On the other hand you can live like a king in many other countries.

I would recommend Portland Oregon... it's similar to San Fran in a lot of ways, but a bit smaller so it's less pricey.
