To mention an old topic in the comments, the pilots are dropping flares for any number of reasons. Sometimes technology in the helo gets buggy and warns the pilot of incoming missiles and can only be shut off by dropping flares. They could also be testing them, or be using them to signal to ground forces. I've seen a pilot drop flares while close to the ground so the soldiers below could start a bonfire. If there is a reason to do it they will drop flares.

only the ignorant say we taught the Taliban to fight,,, we supported the Mujahadine and all we did was give them some weapons,, mainly very old ww2 weapons,, so the soviets could not accuse us of giving them,, later we gave them some missles to shoot down Russian helicopters,, and that was it,, we showed them how to shoot the missles,, but after that,, they didnt recieve any assistance from us,,,,, and thats why the taliban grew in out of the Mujajadine,,we should have stayed to help

Why do they still fire flares? Taliban has no Stingers or SAMs, do they? SAM's cost over $100,000 a shot. That makes it too expensive. Taliban uses old Soviet RPG, 75mm rocket launchers, IED and DHK GPMG's for ambush and assaulting FOB's. Cost-effective while ISAF spends over $150B a year at least. I'd say Taliban budget is not even 1% yet it gets hundreds of KIA/casualties?

It was his administration who had Cia train Taliban and Al qaeda to fight the Soviets - which was a by-product of the Cold War which goes all the way back to the end of WW2.
