  • She is menacing, yet her voice is powerful to be the Queen of the Night. Poor Pamina!

  • best ever seen! breathtaking !!!

  • It's kinda scary I took 2 years of German about 3 years ago, and understand the basic gist of this scene/song.

  • I hate when my mom tries to guilt trip me with her amazing coloraturas too...

  • Holy... shit... D:

  • Maria Callas could not pull this off and I am from Bayreuth!!! WOW!!!

  • Best of the best :)

  • Her speaking voice sounds so ''humanlike'' ;)...great acting. The rest of it is just too amazing...divine.

P.S. It seems incredible that Mozart had faith in human performing this...

  • She and her voice were simply made for this role and it's arias! Together with her mighty, unbeatable performance and her unbelievable great technique she becomes PERFECT as the Queen Of The Night. No one does better!

  • I don't understand how someone good "dislike" this video! She's amazing!!!!

  • she deserved a standing ovation for that. amazing

  • she actually has crazy eyes. wow.

  • Gänsehaut! Diana Damrau ist erste Sahne!

  • Very good, Excellent !!

  • One word.....Excellent !!

  • C'est incroyablement bien !!!

    Magnifique !!!!

  • Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you want to see this in an..alternative way, click the "cc" near the video quality (360p) and put the video translation. Poor Diana :P

  • And, we all know this...SHE IS DIVINE...AJOCONNELL

  • I would love to know what's being said on this vid

  • Holy effin' mackerel!

  • Wow... she really nailed that!

  • turn on the transcribing caption on the video... and read the subtitles XD

  • Diana Damaru I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you...

  • Woah. Amazing.

  • She is my favourite Queen of the Night. Her build, voice and demeanor are all so regal. And the performers in this production are perfect, because they can act and really portray the characters. Opera requires both a good voice and acting skills. There's so much emotion and feeling in their singing! They make the songs personal. Many singers have amazing voices, but no emotion in their singing, which sadly makes them mediocre when they could have amazed.

  • wow she is the most perfect queen of the night i ever saw or heard. i'm tottally amazed

  • She's not human...she's Art...

  • Fantastic performance! Perfekt singing! Best Queen of the Night i habe ever seen! Love it! *.*

  • OMG she's so fucking amazing, I just loved it

  • SIMPLY STUNNING! PERFECTION! LEGENDARY!

  • This is much much much more than PERFECTION .... this woman is the VERY BEST

  • German has never sounded better!

  • ...0_o holy...shit...

you know...I've seen some great versions of this and heard some that are just "slightly" better...but the amount of motion she's doing...and still sounding so good

    I am blown away

  • I am no fan of opera and I apologize to anyone who is offended by that. There is, however, one opera I have always loved and it is this one. Never before have I heard such an incredible voice as Mme. Damrau has. This is absolute perfection. She brings life to a character who in other presentations has remained static and unmoved. I would have paid anything to have seen this performance live and am very thankful that I found it here on YouTube. I am now a very big fan of Diana Damrau.

  • how can people hate this....this is the power of the human voice

  • Ah! The best performance I've seen so far :)

  • OMG thats Amazing.

  • omg she is TERRIFYING. so good!

  • German = beautiful language

Damrau = Great acting and perfect vibrato

These plus beautiful singing creates a genius, if not perfect production. Mozart would be proud.

  • Excellent

  • Perfection!!!Mozart would be proud of her!

  • I often wonder if the audience ever realized that they had just witnessed true perfection...

  • Wow!

  • 2:10

  • The goosebumps! Truly perfect. Mozart was a genius.

  • amazing performance

  • I love her dress...it is as if shadow itself is grasping her chest.

  • wow she is unnaturally good, almost like the high notes are autotunes, which they of course aren't

  • Diana Damrau looks a lot like an Asari woman to me, even her mannerisms in this performance look like they were animated using the Unreal 3 engine. Maybe they could cast her as one in the Mass Effect Movie. A guy can dream.

  • i don't know much of anything about opera but it makes me feel more alive when i watch this...this seems like a pretty perfect performance all around

  • This is on iTunes, just f.y.i. :)

  • She could kill me with her diaphragm.

  • The best queen of the night ever

  • Sublime...

  • SIMPLY FUCKING AMAZING!!!

  • if Mozart only could listen to her - he would say "brava" I'm sure

  • She is the fiercest woman that ever was...

  • Ummm can anyone say perfection??

  • At 3:38 ... really scary!!

  • I always wonder if the people in that room were aware they had just witnessed perfection.

Yes, I am sure they did, these people do not sit around and listen to RAP!

She is AMAZING, surpassing EVERY opera singer that ever lived.

  • @ugha323a I can just agree with you. She's insane... hard for me to hold my tears everytime I heard her LOL! My earsdrum cannot stop orgasm over each notes........

  • @ugha323a modern pop rap is what 're referring to. when rap was created (on the backbone of the blues) it was conscious and full of emotion. but like every music genre, there are those that use it solely for money making, and that's where you get the cRAP you hear today. there are still socially conscious rappers today, they are either underground or greatly marginalized. so don't lump all rap together: it's like saying the opera version of "poker face" represents the opera genre.

  • @ugha323a I hope most of them did realize what an amazing performance she gave, I've heard other performances of this aria that are not nearly on par with Damrau. However, spitting at people who listen to other genres only diminishes the music you are championing. Love the music, but respect other genres and understand the art in all of them. Respect is given where respect is gotten. A true fan of the arts can learn to appreciate all its forms

  • wow.....to tell u the truth i dont like this kinda song but.....this is just perfection such a majestic voice....just astounding!!!

  • I have watched this about ten times. OH my she is so wonderful.

  • I must watch this performance every week!

  • OMG that was perfect!

  • I know I wonder that as well!! What a performance!! WOW!

  • i get goosebumps man... good god amazing...

  • Oh my God this is FANTASTIC.

  • hermosa, maravillosa, me he quedado sin palabras...

  • wow, queen of the night and queen of the drama. Thas was a stunning acting and singing.

  • How could they not be aware that they'd witnessed perfection? This woman is amazing! It's so good to see an opera singer acting, and acting well at that! It's sadly such a rare occurrence. I'm hooked for life on Ms. Damrau! Thanks so much for sharing!

  • Perfection. No other word can describe Diana's performance.

  • Wow!

  • Diana just steals the show.

  • absolutely outstanding. she's the best (L)

  • I think Mozart would have loved Damrau's interpretation.

  • esto es verdaderamente increíble. Gracias!

  • I think Diana Damrau was born to sing that song! Just excellent!

  • The German language is beautiful!

  • This is absolutely fantastic! I wish more people my age listened to stuff like this...One thing though, I'm engaged in a vicious battle with my mum; I think she goes sharp at 3:13/14...my mum is adamant that she can't hear anything. Am I going crazy?

Of course, I wouldn't even dream of saying that it makes the performance any less amazing, I'm just wondering. :)

  • @jaweatern Write me down on your mum's team! xD

  • @jaweatern Actually, I'd say 4 cents flat then 6 cents sharp then back on. The bad thing... Those triplets are different notes and Damrau tends to sing them as the same note. We must remember that these shows sometimes go 2 a day for weeks and this could be fatigue we are hearing. There are other videos here of Damrau (especially the one in the studio) where she is dead accurate throughout and obviously well-rested.

Apparently your pitch is great. Now that I've told you, look for the flat too.

  • @amoskowitz0103 Pffffffff... I mean, really. You perfect pitch people are the worst party poopers xDDDD I know it sounds like maaaaybe she just went a little sharp but having heard Diana live several times, I think it was just a slight flicker in the color of her voice. She still has not completely grown into her full voice and the color and size of her instrument is always shifting slightly.

  • @jaweatern I agree that she goes sharp at 3:13/3:14. Maybe. It's just a little, though, and like you side, it really doesn't detract from the performance.

  • @jaweatern i dont hear it, but you're right about the amazing performance!!! I love Diana's voice:)

  • @jaweatern I agree with you, sorry Lilith89ibz--although, I am totally indebted to you for uploading this masterpiece :)

  • @sealionluver Ah, traitor! xDDD My pleasure :)

  • She is my favorite. I have seen people do this while smiling sweetely. She really shows emotion.

  • What I wouldn't give to have witnessed this

  • BEST VERSION EVER!!!

  • I bought the DVD off of Amazon, this is AMAZING in surround sound and on a plasma tv .. omg!!! From what i gathered is she is the first Queen of the night to actually act out the part, most others were so worried about just hitting the notes they couldnt do anything else. lol but this is most excellent!! I watch the dvd often!

  • Her voice is powerful and strong, her acting very authentic. Great job!!

  • impressionante a interpretação. Simplesmente sensacional!

  • Flawless! Supreme! Magnifique! Superb! Collosal! Grande! PERFECT!

  • wow superb acting and singing. music is excellent, singing is excellent, acting is excellent. what more can you ask for?

  • Just pray that she will one day record Popoli di Tessaglia and Ma che vi fece o stelle...

  • @HolyDarkness19 She won't record Popoli di Tessaglia because she doesn't like it xD I don't know about the other aria, thought!

  • @Lilith89ibz Really?Did she actually say that? When?

I don't believe it, it's Mozart after all and it would suit her voice PERFECTLY. Hers could actually be the best rendition since Edda Moser's, I believe...

  • @HolyDarkness19 She told me a couple of years ago. She finds the aria boring. And it's too high to sit comfortably anymore.

  • @Lilith89ibz She is not willing to hit the high G anymore?

  • @masterka It's not just the high G. The whole aria sits really high. There are a couple of high Ds, and you actually have to sing your way to the high G. Twice.

Diana's voice is growing and getting fuller, which means she's moving into a new repertoire. She's not going to stop singing most of the roles she sings now, like Marie and Lucia, but she has already retired Queen of the Night and Konstanze.

  • @Lilith89ibz But,why...why she is not going to sing these high Gs anymore?Does she have any voice problems?Oh God...i couldn't live without her singing!!!

  • @veskovarbanov No, she doesn't have any voice problems. Every singers' voice changes throughout their careers. High notes are generally easier to sing when you are younger. Diana's voice is growing and becoming fuller, which will enable her to sing slightly more dramatic roles with more ease, but she is not going to lose her top notes. In any case, that the high notes are still there does not mean it doesn't get increasingly difficult to sing them. (continues)

  • @veskovarbanov Putting that kind of strain in your voice can damage it if you do it too often. She will probably continue singing pieces with high notes in concerts and recitals but avoid it in operas, that are not just a long but repeated effort during an extended period of time. To put it in other words, you can run a marathon twice a month, at most, but not 4 times a week!

  • How I wish I could have seen this production!!! I don't think there will ever be a better one..............

  • Brava.

  • Thanks for uploading this vid. Damrau is absolutely amazing. I honestly can't find the words to express how powerful she is in this aria. I am humbled.

  • amazing!!!! do you have the full opera for share with me? i would like to have it!

  • Recht herzlichen Dank aus den Niederlanden, Super das Video!!!

  • i got chills damn.

  • love the crazy in her eyes! Diana Damrau is the Queen.

Diana Damrau, magnifica, electrizante, soberbia. Sin duda alguna la

mejor interpretacion que he escuchado en mi vida.

  • Diana Damrau is the best Queen of the Night ever!!! and singing an aria of the best composer of all times!!! and in HQ!!! \o/

  • Oh shit Diana Damrau and Simon Keenlyside on the same stage! i think my eyes and ears have been melted!!

  • why is she mad at her daughter?

  • @mynameisdianaamaya because she doesn't want to kill Sarastro.

¡¡¡Wooooow!!!

  • ........ quite frankly, such incredible volume control and dead on timing. damrau is such a treat - not a thing to match to other than anderson. absolute coloratura !!

  • she is amazing and very talented. respect :D

  • lovin the drama

  • Hot and scary at the same time. Whew!

  • love when diana screams "not a word" before she starts the aria

    don't mess with her

  • Oh my god...*blown away* i think i just had some kind of mental orgasm while listening to this :P... it's pure and simple perfection! And even though I don't understand a word, This woman's performance is able to give me goosebumps everywhere and even to bring some tears to my eyes... that-is-AMAZING!

  • she is wonderful))

  • I loved her comment, in an interview, about the role. She said that she really liked it for all the "demonic energy' it had. ;-)

  • THIS is how you sing and act, and people call those Glee actors talented, HA!!

  • A magnificent and magnetic performance.

  • this is amazing.

  • Thanks for uploading The Queen of the Night HQ. Totally in love with Diana's performance.

  • I already gushed about this perfomance under another video. So just let me tell you a big thank you for uploading it in HQ (and thanks for the link, that's going to be a nice christmas present from me to myself.) Speaking of - have nice mid winter holidays you all!

  • Besser geht es nicht!! Meine Verehrung, Frau Damrau.

Danke für das Hochladen dieses Videos an Lilith89biz.

  • She crushed it!!

  • love this piece but don't understand why the queen is so angry

  • @JTanis Well, in essence, her husband died and gave the Circle of the Sun (i.e. his powers) to Sarastro, who 'a wise man' (in other words, the boss of a sect) and she wanted it for herself and she's not getting it because she is a woman and according to the deceased, 'unworthy'. I would be really mad too.

  • @JTanis - - - - have you even read the story????? fairy tales are full of hate - murder, this is vaudeville. hello???????

  • I got goosebumps everywhere.

  • 4 people deserve the Queen of the Night's wrath.

  • Wow! That is one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. Mesmerizing!

  • So far This is the best representation of the QUEEN OF THE NIGHT!!! Damrau makes it inpresively amazing!!! i can't stop watching/lisent it pfffff Thnx for upload this HD version!!!!

  • If Mozart would be alive to see this rendition he would be so proud of this lady! This is REALLY opera! Probable the best rendition ever recorded in history!!!

  • UNBELIEVABLE.

  • Oh my God... I watched this at full screen and at the close ups I felt as if she would come out of this screen and kill me... HAUNTING performance. Only superlatives can be told about it. Would you mind if I write some subtitles?

  • @Transoxiana94 I would LOVE some subtitles for the spoken part! I know what she is saying but I've never been able to figure out all the words in German. I would add them to the video description and make an annotation on the video itself :)

  • @Lilith89ibz I don`t speak German and I do try to figure out one or two words as well as you, but a few weeks ago I found a bunch of translations of the libretto with the full recitative in this scene and with much listening I found what exactly Diana was saying (here`s not the full recitative). I know much people were guessing and I wanted to help :) I`ll write them later today.

  • @Transoxiana94: Hey! I personally would also LOVE for you to post subtitles! I would REALLY appreciate that very much :-) I'm glad that Lilith89ibz concurs as well.

I think you should post subtutles for the initial dialogue and the aria. In German as well as an English translation...

    Thank you very much :-)

  • @DJJonPattrsn22 She sent the subtitles to me already, but I need to correct them and post them! Sorry for the delay!

  • @Lilith89ibz Oh wonderful! That's fantastic :-) I'm excited to see them- I've been wondering what all she was saying... (I have watched this video & showed to friends countless times! Thank you SO much for posting it!). I understand some of it and of course I am familiar with various translations of the aria- but it will be awesome to understand the whole dialogue despite the distraction they cause.

  • @all who asked for subtitles: I have just transcribed the spoken part and prepared an English translation. I am German, so at least the German part should be allright. I will post it piece by piece (because I can't post it all together). Hope you enjoy it!

  • Transcript and translation: Pamina: Mutter? … Mutter! [Mother?... Mother!] [Where is the boy I sent to you?] [Oh dear mother, he is gone from this world and from humans forever. He has given himself to the Inaugurated.] Mutter: Den Eingeweihten? [The Inaugurated?] Pamina: Ja. [Yes.]
  • @amasonize Thanks for this translation! There is a line missing between where mutter angrily says Den Eigeweihten?! and Pam replies Ja.....and before the Schutz? If you would be so kind as to translate this line.Appreciated, john from Sydney

  • @SuperJohnnykay My mistake, I left a comment out without realising it! Fixed now :)

  • @Lilith89ibz :OK! and hello again,John from Sydney. While I am here, just a note of thanks for posting the variousDD vids which i have been delighted with, greatly appreciated,jk

  • Mutter: Unglückliche Tochter! Nun bist du mir auf ewig entrissen.

[Poor daughter! Now you are wrested away from me forever.]

Pamina: Entrissen? Oh fliehen wir, liebe Mutter! Unter deinem Schutz trotz’ ich jeder Gefahr.

[Wrested away? Oh let us flee, dear mother! Under your protection I can bear all danger.]

  • Mutter: Schutz? Mein liebes Kind! Deine Mutter kann dich nicht mehr schützen. Mit deines Vaters Tod ging meine Macht zu Grabe.

[Protection? My dear child. Your mother can’t protect you any more. When your father died my power was buried too.]

    Pamina: Mein Vater….

    [My father…]

  • [Your father gave the Sevenfold Circle of the Sun to the Inaugurates unsolicited. When I talked to him about that he said: “Women… My last minute has come. All treasures are for you. And for your daughter. But the Sevenfold Circle of the Sun will be hold in a male manner like I did before by Sarastro. Do not search for things that a female brain can not understand. Your duty is to surrender yourself and your daughter to the leadership of wise men.”]
