Between artillery and disease; you wonder how the WWI soldier kept on going? These campaigns are so alien to how things are done now. Well, it's over 90 years since the 'Armistice' and we still have combat? It seems that societies on Earth have this as a 'common' feature.

watching this put a uneasy feeling in my gut. i haven't been anywhere near a war and can't relate to anybody who has even if they try to explain it because i haven't been there to experience it firsthand. even when i see pictures or hear stories, i will never from that, understand what it is like being in battle. the horrors that a soilder faces, the smells, the cries...the thought of it sometimes is so overwhelming.

I still have our old neighbor's helmet he wore when he was a dough boy in France 1917. Its too bad its the only thing of his that wasn't water damaged. He used to have his full uniform, bunk, kit, gas mask, everything, but it got damaged in the attic where it was stored.

LOL Russia already stoped fighting in 1917. the eastern front was closed and the german soldiers were moved from the eastfront to the westfront to launch a last offensive. SO Russia had no soldier left, the war was already over in the east.

plus the royal navy blockade meant that germany was starving thats why the german push that broke the stalemate (can't remeber the name) broke down, the german elite troops disaplin broke down as soon as they found food and the allience was able to counter attack.

The reason the German offensive broke down was poor planning. They could have been very dangerous but they only had success in the secondary area of their assault. So what they did was let tactics control their strategy. The result was that their logistical araragnemgents for moving food through southern France were nil. It was sitting at the North of the German line which couildnt advance.

After writing nine letters to friends and relatives and a note to the ships captain regarding what to do with his luggage, he jumped overboard. His body was never found.

We basically saved the allies in both world wars. We came because we didn't want to see our allies getting completely decimated. Be grateful, we may have arrived later in the war, but that doesn't mean that we didn't suffer and that we didn't help. The world wars ended shortly after America arrived because America arrived. Both world wars could have lasted years longer if we hadn't joined them. Next time think before you get angry at America.

That's just not true. The Germans were beaten after the Somme. Their spring offensive failed catastrophically against 90% Brit and French troops. American presence hastened the end of the war and allowed the harsh Versailles treaty, but nothing more. As for you saving the allies during WWII - I think the 23 million or so dead soviets credit the red army with that one. The presence of the Americans DID prevent a larger communist bloc developing in post war Europe. Which is a good thing.

The presence of the americans mesnt the Germans had to accept whatever terms were imposed, and the French wanted Versailles - they had lost 1.4m men, had their country trashed. Without the Americans the Germans would have been in a position to negotiate because the French and Brits did not want to fight anymore either. The Germans lost, but the anglo-french were badly beaten up.

Ok, America joined the Entente(Allies was WW2) in April of 1917, we had a division in France by November the same year. It wasnt until 1918 however that we started to get a lot of troops in Europe.

Maybe they saved use from dispair and defeat.... but the British and French soldiers fought for 3 years, and got slaughtered.... Britain were the true heroes in that war.... and wasn't it Britain who created tanks that turned the tide of the war?

I think the thing is that the introduction of the AEF into the war before the Germans could finish their final offensive. Yes, the Allies who were there the entire time are true heroes, with the BEF somehow getting decimated twice, and the French who were finally figuring out small squad tactics four years later, but the fresh American troops and their energy and numbers stopped the CP offensives and turned the tide.
