i came across this by chance. it took me somewhere new and beautiful and difficult. this song, jeff's voice and intention, his vulnerable sincerity its truly effecting. fucking gorgeous.
The first thing that popped into my head when I heard this song: Song of Solomon. Epic, beautiful. Thanks for posting, and thank you Woody/Wilco for making it happen.
Im 16 and i love Bob Dylan. I consider him the greatest lyricist of all time. However, i believe that this song is the greatest lyrical song of all time. Woody Guthrie will always be remembered.
@pixburghstillerfan Song wise its up there i agree, however I think the flaming lips 'do you realise' is pretty darn good, although rather more simplified. Dylan is great, but many of his best songs and ideas were heavily influenced, especially his early folk stuff, for lyrics Joni mitchell is retty good, Dylans a one liner lyricist, Joni paints pictures. :)
Woody Guthrie is one of the greatst musicians of all time, as well as wilco and Billy Bragg. This song is spectacular but wouldn't have been nearly as good if it had been recorded in Woody Guthrie's minimalistic style
I heard this song on 180 degrees South. I loved it and bought this along with the entire Soundtrack. I recommend the movie to everyone, it really changed my perspective on life. (Im 14)
Thanks for sharing. I'll share one of my favorite movies with you: The Motorcycle Diaries. You'll find the scenery to be just as beautiful as that of 180 Degrees South. It's in Spanish, however. So, you'll have to read subtitles. You may enjoy it even more than 180 Degrees South, though. It's certainly exciting!
@Donnnnnnny same dude! Ive seen the movie probably 10 times, and its just a different take on life and conservation than Ive ever seen before. It changed my perspective on life as well. Everyone should go see that as soon as you can!
@Donnnnnnny This movie changed my perspective on life as well. I also found this song after searching the lyrics that I heard in the movie, and both this and the movie are unbelievable. Ever since, Ive spread the movie to all my friends and teachers, and it has had a profound impact on them as well. And I understand where you're coming from, Im 17. Unbelievable stuff. Im glad to see it had the same impact on someone else like it did to me.
I am at most, a passing Wilco fan. Woody Guthrie is a genius and I own many of his recordings, but will freely admit, I rarely listen to them for enjoyment. This song, I will be listening to until the day that I die. It is a perfect collaboration. Wilco could not have written the lyrics, as Woody could not have written the music. I have wept more times at the listening of this song than any other, and I truly believe, it is if not the best, then at least one of the best songs ever recorded.
should check out Billy Bragg's solo stuff, the best artist out there that gives a damn. may not always agree with his politics but nice to hear a song that means something
