Once again, we have another video that makes the distinction between "sex" and "gender" and then proceeds to confuse sex and gender, and confirm the sterotypes that infringe transsexual and intersex rights. Indeed, the "trans-man" is a FTM transsexual, yet is labelled "transgender". A transsexual is changing his/her sex, to the extent medically and economically feasible, not their gender.
I just attended a LGBTQ Civil Rights training as a City of Seattle Employee and they showed this video as a part of the training. I think that this is a wonderful explanation of gender and sexuality and thank you so much for making it. It helped a lot of people in the training understand how to look past the heteronormative and even relate in how they break from the traditional roles and expressions. It was awesome to see that reaction.
I wanted to say that this video is fantastic and who made it really understands what transgender is all about. I am a member of a support site for transgender people and understand what they go though. I'm MTF myself. I would really like to see this video get around. It accurately explains what it is like to be transgender and can educate others who are ignorant and want to learn.
Well done! This video needs to be available to all who are struggling with it.
Whoa...so because I feel both male and female on the inside, even though I'm fine with my physical gender assignment, I'm still considered transgender? Somehow I actually feel better about myself. Thanks!
@MyBetty111 no it dosent I think the reacon why meny think so is beceasue trans people and non straight people dont have the same right as hetrosexuall sis gender people so they ban togeder :P
Like in politics when to partsys work together for a cause :)
tey are not one party the are two partys forging for the same gole :D
The "Authentic Gender Model" at 9:26 really explains everything perfectly. It makes it almost comical to then look at the "Traditional Gender Model" at 1:30 when it's so painfully obvious that there are so many people/groups that don't fit into it. Why is our society so stubbornly stupid? Excellent video, thanks!
i'm FTM trans guy pre-op and i HATE being called "tom-boy" or "butch lesbian" because i am internally male. i have the desire to procreate with a woman. i wish i could live my life as a good christian or buddhist man but no matter which culture you look into the people are going to say "God thinks it's wrong" to mess with your body or change your mind about your gender expression. i hate the binary but i know for myself to exist, it too must be un-ending, ultimately i strive toward Balance...
I want to thank the producers and the people who participated in this documentery\video. I was able to use this material for my church's Transgender support group. and i found it very helpfull and informative.
Thank you. Very interesting and informative. Certainly, many of us, whether we technically fit into this category or not, do not fit the stereotypical "gender roles" projected in our society.
While this is a pretty good film, it really bothers me they have Laverne Cox, the trans woman, filmed putting on makeup. This is such a cliche in every film about trans women and is really offensive. As though our female identities and spirit are all about playing dress-up or being cross-dressers. They didn't do that with the trans men.
@kabardinka1 They didn't? Funny, that close-up on his weights at 12:58 and shots of him in front of his big, impressive speaker system and music collection seemed awfully typical of the male stereotype. At any rate, I think the whole point of including these two individuals was to demonstrate roughly the two typical scenarios most people can relate to in order to better contrast Chang's situation.
"A person who does not conform or identify with the gender expectations associated with the sex the were assigned at birth"
I feel like this definition describes a lot of people who don't identify as transgender or queer and never even thought about it.
Obviously said expectations drastically change(d) in time and space and, by this definition, the average liberated western woman would be a transgender in Iran.
Looking at the diagram in the beginning of the video, I'm thinking the main problem with our society has to do with the first connection: the idea that your sex determines the way you're ought to act, dress, behave, feel and whom you're supposed to be attracted to. I hope this doesn't come off as insulting, but I sort of feel like identifying with the opposite sex because you don't fit into gender stereotypes doesn't help getting over the gender binary in our society.
ok... unfortunately, all over the world there is discrimination based on wether you are a man or a woman (positive or negative, doesn't matter). i'm talking about laws who mention men and women, not just citizens. what about those laws? when should they be applied? actually, i think they shouldn't exist, but... when would they be applied if this kind of complexity would be sanctioned by the legal systems? :)
this video is wonderful. my mother found out that i am transgender over the weekend, and i really want to get her past the point where she thinks i have destroyed her life and killed her daughter. my parents are reacting so negatively, and they know nothing about the situation. i am hoping that this video will help them understand
@PITTdylanCREW I'm so sorry you're going through that with your parents! I hope they come around. Know that I and many others support you and applaud your courage for coming out.
The comments about a trans-child being concerned that their sex didn't match their gender seems to point to the interconnectedness of gender and sex. They can't be wholly distinct categories (as the intro seemed to indicate) because then there wouldn't be a need for trans-people to correct their genitalia to match their gender identity. I find this discontinuity intriguing.
I am also intrigued...and i'm trans! It is clear to me what I want my body to look like and how i see myself and not as simple for me to find the language to express this. I think the video is trying to say that sex does not equal gender, not that the two aren't related.
@gyrotaco Actually, I think that there is a difference between categories that are distinct and categories that are connected. Just because sex and gender are two distinct categories--two separate categories--does not mean that they aren't related and sometimes connected. Although some trans people want and need surgery to change genitalia, not all people who identify as trans want or need to change their bodies.
This video again shows examples of boys being incultured to be masculine (in their definition violent and into blocks) before they show examples of girls being inclutured into their gender. This video is questioning GENDER while non-verbally taking part in the MALE DOMINANT order of things by explaining men first and WOMEN second! If this video is progressive in its questioning of gender models, then why can't it even question the hetero-centric habits of video editing? LGBTCenterNYC hmm?
We have to look at individuals holistically and know that body, mind, etc are always connected in some way. I also want to point out that many trans folks don't feel the need to change their bodies. You make some really excellent critiques! Don't write us off, just help us improve!
Firstly, I have not finished watching the video, but I noticed the editing of this video tips its hat to the hetero-hegemony in that the types of people that are going to be discussed ARE categorized, in fact, that is practically our first interaction with them. They are introduced in this way, Man, Woman, Other. So, what I understand the point of this video to be-that gender cannot be simply categorized - is underminded by this editing because it implies that A. gender just has more categories,
and B. that the hetero-hegemonic structure (man, woman, other) is maintained. In conclusion, the editing of this video implicitly complies with the hetero-hegemonic structure that it is interrogating; also, we have yet to see if this video succeeds in making complex the idea of gender, or if it has a simpler goal -- changing the definitions of male and female.
Thank you so much for making a video like this. I'm transgender and it means a lot that there are people like you guys that are trying to open others eyes that theres nothing wrong with us because of who we are. <3

The Trans movement does NOT belong under the umbrealls of the gay and lesbian civil rights movement. It is a different thing altogether.
