Hey please respond, so i have te EXACT problem with my gateway laptop before this i did remove the thermal compound. Could it be this? Im really hoping its not the motherboard because ive already had to replace the oeiginal motherboard. It fried
The one i bought was working great until one night i shut it down to take a break, then when i turned it back on the screen went dark. I could barely see the screen at an angle, and just recently bought a new monitor complete (inverter included) and still the same thing happens. Everything boots up fine and i can barely see the screen.. Now has me questioning the AC-Adapter. Any suggestions?
I had the same issue. It is in fact the motherboard. Now this particular model is veeeeery sensitive to being messed with. I took it apart to change the LCD and then the backlight quit working. I then realized that the keyboard wasnt working. This model is not the best they have had. But if you listen to the laptop at the bottom when removing the cover you will hear a hissing, that unfortunately is the sound of burning electronics. Most likely a capacitor is where i located it.
@studboy1591 In my case, it was deteriorated thermal compound between the CPU and heat sink. I put new compound on the CPU. Now operating good as new.
Try clearing the bios. Open up your laptop, somewhere on the motherboard there will be a battery that looks similar to a watch battery. Pop it out for about 30 minutes to an hour and put it back in. That should clear the bios. If that doesn't work, you will see a cable connected to the bios battery, GENTLY take it out of the connector for an hour and see if your laptop will work
@radmanace when I installed ubuntu, what it did was mess up the boot file. Which is why when i uninstalled ubuntu it did not overwrite the ubuntu bootfile, which forced a restart over and over. Here is what I did:
Grabbed another copy of windows, booted from cdrom, (NOT the backup BS disk image but an actual copy of windows) ran a reinstall and works fine. For some reason it will not reinstall windows from a disk image due to the boot thing.
My same lap top does the same Fing thing ! Its a boot order issue I think the Bios need to be flashed ,it seems mine can't fine what to boot ,it has no bios ,so this may be a clue?try a new BIOS battery

Ya I pulled the hard drive out of my MD2614u and booted to bios, it's been running for the last hour with no reboots. It's my harddrive that is causing the problem with rebooting. In a couple weeks I'm going to get a new hardrive and then maybe I can get back to using my laptop. lol
Mines doing the same thing, I think I have a bad harddrive. When I first bought my MD2614u 2 years ago it wouldn't boot up and I couldn't even get into bios, turns out the harddrive died in less than a month. Bestbuy replaced the harddrive for free and it worked great till about 2 weeks ago. I think I might have another bad harddrive, going to buy a new one and a external drive enclosure for the new harddrive just incase it is a bad motherboard problem.
@radmanace That....is actually not a bad idea...... I can't believe I havent thought about checking the CPU as one of the first steps.
When installing a CPU, you have to use conductive jelly to bond the CPU to the heat sink. If you don't use this jelly, or I guess if it deteriorates, then the computer won't even boot.
I learned this when building a system form scratch for the first time a few years ago. I was pulling my hair out because my brand new baby wouldnt turn on. I forgot the jelly!
mine has the same exact problem. I just replaced the motherboard and its still doing the same thing. I'm sending the motherboard back for another one hoping its the motherboard.
@JRelax Try a new harddrive, I had to replace my harddrive when I first bought mine, it was doing the same thing as this one. And now it's doing it again less than 2 years later.
IMO MD2614u laptops are junk and Gateway should either replace them for free or atleast give us a deep discount on a new one. They discontinued the MD line of laptops in less than a year after they put them out. Even they knew they were junk.
hey i have on of those..its wat im using right now lol. if it doesnt boot up at all, its definetly a motherboard problem, it cant be a virus or so..ive had mine 4 almost a year though. and if this is how mine is guna end up ima think of selling it lol

Solved the problem. Just needed new thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink. Works like new again!

Check connectors. Found some loose connection. Just remove keyboard. No need to remove back.

p.s. the windows disk can be just an old XP disk

I uninstalled windows, installed ubuntu from a memory stick, works perfect...I can't explain why it won't boot to windows.

Update: I have found no solution to the problem and have since bought an Asus.
My diagnosis is that Gateway is a decent brand, but this model is unsalvagable garbage.
Take out the hard drive and RAM to keep as backups.
