  • I just checked out Shawn Lane for the first time, i watched a bunch of vids with him performing and yes he is definitely great but I still say Bireli is better (this is only my opinion) Ya Shawn lane is great at shredding and he has great technical skill as well as emotional feel but for me he does not compare to the versatility of Bireli Lagrene. I have seen Bireli play almost every style of music i can think of even metal, just type in Bireli Metal to watch him shred like its nothing!!

  • And also to point out, Bireli is a phenominal bass player and a very good violin player as well.

  • Saw this over at flatpickers and my jaw unhinged. My coment over there was WOW. Never heard of him before but I'll never forget him now.

  • extra-terrestre..........

  • once in a while i come back here to remember myself i can't play, and there's still a long way to go for me

  • Check out the chops on those hands. I don't believe I have ever seen muscles like that on a guitarists hands.

  • How the hell did he come up with the detuning melody part?!?

  • Awesome bassplayer!!!

  • LOL, how can 11 "people" dislike this?

  • LOL, how can 11 "people" unlike this?

  • Rien à dire c'est vraiment lui le maitre.

    Bravo

  • good picker ;)

  • I WISH !!! Bireli is GOD when he wants !

  • I went to see him in Cambridge (England) in the 80's when he was 14......... just as amazing then

  • Genial Birelli: Le Maître !!!

  • Bravo Bravo!!!

  • Less coffee, more music please.

  • the way he incorporates classic tunes in his improvs is absolutely awesome.

  • Genius!

  • He literally "plays" with his instrument and music...is a pleasure to listen him.

  • Django's soon saw bireli played, many years ago. He said : "this guy is better than my father". Obviously that's true !

  • @tolarkemar

    technique-wise perhaps.. but not musically.

  • Amazing!

  • *Dumfounded*

    That guitarist is amazing.

  • Sound quality from the 50s

  • AAAHH... too good

  • This guy is amazing!

  • Look at shawn lane, you'll see the power of the instrument (for me he is the best guitar player in the world)

  • @sangohan42 Check out the video of Lagrene playing Stella by Starlight. I think you'll appreciate his playing on that one.

  • @sangohan42 Shawn Lane had great power and speed, surely, but in my opinion he didn't have the creativity, musicality of Bireli Lagrene (who is pretty fast enough by the way) I love his sense of humour when he is doing his citation at 1:53

  • @emeraldomusik I think he did, Shawns Fusion and Indian stuff were pretty friggin creative.

  • @sangohan42 na i have to disagree with ya, check out more of bireli and eventually you will change your mind, lol

  • real nice, love the big top finnish

  • 1:52 is so cool a lick!

  • Yep. Just finished guitaring for good !!

    I'll get my coat.

  • that guy is a monster on that guitar!! that makes me want to throw my guitar down and never touch it again lol

  • awesome! i love the tune down of the e string at the end!

  • The absolute greatest.

  • The best solo forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

  • my idol....

  • @celebratorsztuki ....mine too..!!

  • Wonderful''''''''''''''''

  • i like when he drops the low E at the end by detuning the string!

  • I know, man! Did you hear everyone get all weird? It was like someone got suckered punched or something: "oooohh". That's gotta be a crowd of guitarists.

  • Guitarists? At a Gypsy jazz show? Nah...

  • heh Yeah, no shit. I guess that was a stupid comment. Most non-musicians like gypsy jazz when they hear it, but they're not generally privy to its existence before-hand.

  • no you're totally right. they're all gonna go home and shed those licks til they bleed.

  • look at what the guitarist does with his face at :02

  • this is pure old greatness:)

  • awesome!!!

  • Great stuff, would love to see the fiddle player during the 1st minute or so !

  • le top ce mec....

     bravo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It doesn't even look like he's fingerpicking!

  • Je rigole quand je pense a la tête aux guitaristes (dont moi ) qui voient cette vidéo ! Il me donne des sueur froides ! ^^

  • Faiiiiiiiiiiiit pééteeeeeeeeeeer !..

  • "Guitar Explodes After Ridiculous Beating: Film at 11"

  • este guey ase que me de un orgasmo

  • Bireli is a true artist! Unbelievable. Not only does he display command of the instrument, but he's not afraid to let the right side of his brain take dominion of his fingers......

  • Please do not take this the wrong way; I myself am a classical guitarist and am only curious what you mean by right side of his brain.

  • The right side is more creative, spatial, artistic, non-linear.

  • that's amazing....

  • YEAH, Birelli = THE MAN. Killer feel.

  • amazing that little tuning trick at the end !1!

  • Django, watch out lol

  • no comparison i'm afraid.

  • Holy Cow!

  • Very impressed.

  • wow

  • Florin Niculescu is on violin

  • I went from highly impressed to stupified in about 30 seconds ... Why havent I heard of this guy before and have been playing guitar my whole life ?

  • Probably several reasons - one he lives in Europe, two he plays a very narrow style of music - in this case Django style jazz amoung other very ecclectic styles like jazz fusion and post bop - not style most of us listen to. He is also an incredible bassist.

  • @amarealslow

bireli hardly played hot club for many years, during that time he played a lot of different styles..

  • he use to tour with jaco pastorius and was on the east coast for around 2 months ago tour with joey defrancesco the hammond player, hes been around.... even tours with al de meola and the trio he had. btw he does dj gigs bebop gigs and more, look up his singing and bebop stuff ..... gl m8s

  • He lived and toured the US for about 10 years or more (up through the mid or late 90's) and he played all over the country. I saw him 6 or 8 times in DC, Philly and NYC.

The first time I saw him on his own he was playing a Strat through a Marshall. Heheh. He toured with Larry Coryell playing jazz fusion (many US dates) right before he started the Gipsy Project.

  • @freemind321 He's is heir apparent to Django he has been playing professionally since he was twelve. Unlike a lot of Manouche musicians he can play straight jazz as well as fusion. He even did a CD of Sinatra tunes where he played and sang on a couple of tracks

  • Who is playing violin?

  • florin nicolescu

  • my god... the end... i.. i.. i cant believe it ... this guy is a genius

  • Gershwin at 1:00 lol

  • Bireli always makes me laugh whenever he dose something clever.

  • You mean every time he picks up the guitar? ;)

  • Yup, and I must have lost at least two pounds.

  • Lovely tone off that guitar, brilliant playing

  • This person wins my seal of approval. Very nicely done.

  • Bireli = guitar god

  • holy crap batman, that's absolutely SMOKIN playing. I'm surprised the guitar didn't catch fire!

  • I've made the mistake of watching this just before going to bed on a number nights... I can never get to sleep afterwards!

    ;-)

  • That's so good it hurts! ;-)

  • Django plays it betta no offence gd try but u cant be as gd as Django the guitarist who played with 2 fingers

  • that what i call a maestro not you typical shreder nerd

  • AMEN BROTHER

  • Bireli just doesn't need more than 2 minutes to show you he is one of the best guitarists EVER.

  • or 2 seconds :)

  • @CrAzzyWak thats what i mean too. sometimes i think he 's the best........(on jazzguitar)

  • How about that lightening fast run at 1:20. mind blowing.

  • Damm thats Talent!

  • that is great! I love that song! very talented!!!

  • Godlike! And a huge inspiration :D

  • goddamn the tuning trick at the end is so amazing!!

  • woooooooooww

  • Truly AWESOME !!

    Chris Womack

  • I filmed this performance in front of City Hall in Houston, Texas 2002. He arrived that morning at 6 AM and was drinking beers all day, had jet lag, and still played that well in almost 100 degree temperature. Bireli is just amazing!

  • translates: Unbelievable, I think no one can master an instrument better than this.

  • "Guitar Spontaneously Explodes After Performance" Film at 11.

  • Gershwin quote around 1:00

  • he proves that a good musician doesn't NEED electricity

  • haha Yeah, I bet his mic was off, huh? lol =)

  • Awesome solo. Most solo's. Everytime I hear a solo more it gets better. But this one is good from start to finish. Love the circus music

  • I cant even imagine the incredible strenght of his right wrist, look at his right hand, they play mostly in downstroke, its damn hard!

  • Watching this is like being on a rollercoaster, full of thrills and surprises. The very end of the solo blows my mind. How on earth does he think so fast?

  • He don't.Its chops put together at home. He's still the greatest:)

  • NO man....

He's got this in his blood.

And he takes some risks, he doesn't play safe !

He's perhaps the only one who can improvise so often and so fast in this "virtuoso" style.

  • No, Gary Potter improvises as well as Berelli

  • that's what i think

    great comment):-)

    music is risks

  • Now if you'll excuse me, my head just flew off !!!!!!!!!

  • This is the ultimate evidence that our planet is

    invaded by interstellar beings!

  • Now this is not for beginners, haha... Phew!

  • now heres a player that shows what ya can do if you become a guitar-monk and keep yourself in a practice room ie:monastery, for years at a time

  • joppa

  • unreal

  • this is amazing.. wow, I'm still shocked :-)

Bireli is definitely an amazing superb guitarist. I set it in the top 3 ever.

  • Bireli always tears it up! He's looking a bit like Vince Vaughan in this clip!

  • at around 1:00-1:02 he qoutes a famous tune.. cant remember the name though..

  • The French name for that song is "Titine", it was used by Chaplin in a movie...

  • rhapsody in blue, gershwin

  • bereli=master

  • band good!! birele lagrene !!good d +++

  • E?! Nice! Threw me off at first. I play mine in F but I like this key pretty good too. B flat is another good one.

  • Clever, tuning.

  • This is purely genius... Oh lord

  • A few mistakes here and there are the hallmark of true inprovisation rather than someone who has a bunch of cold tricks worked out. What blows me away is how little time it takes him to get back on track, his reaction time is stunning, as soon as he senses a discrepancy it takes him something like two notes to get it back on track. Viva honesty. I hate the way the media in general tries to show us only perfection. This is real life.

  • number one is nonsense, it s music not sport! for me its mystery too he plays in the style but there s something more " du genie ?"

  • those "odd" notes weren't mistakes...he was just playing "outside" ...

  • Mistakes! I should be so lucky to makes such mistakes as these...

  • I really can't hear any mistake! I didn't know either Django was alive and posted comments on YouTube! I think this is a little masterpiece of gypsy jazz style improvisation, it's amazing the fisical strength, the vibrato and the expression of this way to play, what a right hand! Wow!
