@Dougca1985 It is the remnants of a supernova, a mix of gas and dust. On the scale of that picture a planet would be so much smaller than a spec of dust there is no chance you could see it, the amount of gas and dust there is likely significantly more than the nebula that condensed to form our entire solar system.
@Beta4Life Thank you for clarifying that Beta4life and thank you for all those great sarcastic remarks as well. I knew the answer, but I just wanted to be certain I wasn't wrong. I knew it was the same picture the whole way through, but I guess I didnt phrase my question correctly. :)
One of the best albums of all time. In my top 5 after 2 decades of scouring the earth for all sorts of metal. And this song is probably my personal favorite on the album, along with Star Crossed. Absolutely brilliant creativity. So glad they're planning to get back together.
I don't think any band can capture the tension between light and dark like Arcturus had. Their lyrics and music invoke all kinds of strange thoughts, but its the 'things' that can happen in the cruel, cold, dark indifference of the nether regions of deep space that they tap into which sets them apart from just about any band out there. Its probably also why young teenage boys 'just don't get it'. Its adult music.
I just can't...I just fucking can't, and I wont stop to listen this song, for thousand times if I need...because I am beyond the light, and I don't need some stupid lamp haha...
does anyone know what the logo/symbol in the upper right corner of the album cover is? maybe it's nothing and just a design for the album, but i suspect there's something more to it.
The complicated "morse code" snare intro is killer! The drums on this album are uninspirate?! I don't think so, HH on this recording is absolutely perfect! The triggers sound fits the Arcturus music perfectly, end of story...
Reading few comments around here...and I cant understand why some people think that this world is depressing and terrible.People why see the negative part only?+ when I listen to this song it rather makes me happy and energetic, not depressed.Just saying...
One of those very few masterpieces that can bring tears. Most beautiful indeed. This is art, real art. Beyond music, beyond sounds, beyond lyrics and literature. This is pure art. Anyone who claims to know art without having listened to Black Metal and Arcturus in particular, has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.
@MemetronDaBboy I'm glad you also share the same feeling I have. It's the same over here. Everyday shows me more and more how depressing and terrible this world is and how many horrible persons live in it. As a Black Metal musician I have discovered that the very few "good people" in this world are mainly my collegues and a few exceptions. It's surprising how self-destructive everyone is. Art is one of the few things that can help endure it all. And Arcturus and Black Metal are pure Art.
After listening to Ulver for quite a while, I find that there is never that much singing, which is fine because it works with the rest of the music very well. Only Garm is my favortie singer, so It's great to find an album in which he sings so much!

Funny, comments stating arcturus can't be classified, then try to classify it. The best bands, such as (in my opinion) Arcturus, rise above genres they take elements from - managing to be UNIQUE *and* sound brilliant in an age where most bands are either doing what has been done to death, or try so hard to be 'progressive' they fail at making good music. Arcturus may be progressive, but what matters is they make beautiful songs that are, for some, an almost spiritual experience to listen to.
Amazing! Sham Mirrors is a real masterpiece, even though I do prefer La Masquerade Infernale.
One thing that really bugs me about Sham Mirrors (and Sideshow..) is Hellhammer's super triggered drum sound.. Yes, this album is to some extenct a "space rock" album or whatever you want to call it, but goddamn, has Hellhammer gone deaf? The drums sound like the midi sounds on the old Sound Blaster soundcards...
Arcturus is my all time favourite band, but goddamn the drums sound horrible!

Postscriptnow have you been deaf all your life and this was the first thing you heard..haha at that point a garbage truck would sound good..this isnt bad, but isnt brilliant like that..its certainly no Meredith Brookes or Paula Cole..lol.
This is metal. But it is missing the point entirely.
No-one has been able to produce this sound. Otherwise it would have been done before, right? It took a genius to come up with the lyrics of this song, the compilation is world class and the finished product has no rival. This music transports its listerners via wormholes to the the darker places of the universe.
LOL! They're unique, you mean! I mean... what other band composes music like this?!? IMO, they are beyond good or bad, since UNIQUE is the only word to describe this band.
was für ein wunderschönes lied... mit soviel atmosphäre und gefühl....das wirkt so wundersam surreal auf mich....haut mich einfach um das lied....***** thanks for the upload
Except that this track is closer to progressive rock. Still a really good album, but for the most part this album is progressive rock and not 'metal', even the 'black metal' parts are more 'black progressive rock' than 'black metal'.
There's just not a shred of any 'metal' left, it's progressive rock. There is no way to headbang to any of the tracks, it has no riffs, it uses unusual signatures at various parts, it's music of structure, and not of moment, it's progrock.
I wouldn't call this progrock by any means, progrock I would consider to be more Kamelot or Sona Arctica, nor is it black metal in my opinion, the techniques, style and sound is too unique to be considered anything other than Avante Garde Metal. IMO.
SA and Kamelot progrock? I think your definition of progrock is extremely nonstandard.
Progrock are things like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Utopia, some things from Pain of Salvation. Devil Doll, Fragments of Duration.
Effectively it's rock music that focuses more on the structure of a song, eschews verse-chorus-verse songs, has elaborate breakdowns, unusual signatures, concept alba. Music like this. It's just rock that's more 'serious', if you get the idea.
@nageljeuk "There is no way to headbang to any of the tracks" Of course you can.. despite the unusual time signatures there is a straight 'line' in most of the songs... I can headbang to this and most arcturus songs just fine, if I didn't have back problems that is.. Not a moment the rythm feels awkward or unnatural...
I def. agree. this is top quality music. I also listen to some old rock, but I cannot find goog quality music that is not metal, but is created this days, like goog rock doesnt exist no more, it only evolved to some metal bands, but onestly, I'm having trouble finding good bands outside metal, the last one is Last shadow puppet, but it can't compare to this in terms of style, of course :)
