Nikki and paulo both stole the diamonds, but one was hiding from the other. Paulo actually liked her, and she was only focused on the diamonds. Actually Paulo was bitten by a real spider but the smoke monster manifested into the swarm of spiders that bit Nikki. Even though they weren't real spiders they still had the same effect and Nikki was paralyzed. Then they were both buried alive. So yeah the smoke monster did turn into the spiders.....LOST owned!!!!!

As far as his name, that's just what the production team nicknamed him. Ben said "we don't have a name for it. I suppose you call it the monster." Noone can properly name it because the human tongue cannot annunciate the sounds needed to form his name. The closest letter we can make is the glottal "stop".

This was a good episode.. and the reason so many spiders came is because he swatted a "Female" spider on his neck, release it's pheromones attracting many more.. Damon Lindelof and Carleton Cuse (for those that don't know, they are the two main writers on the show) have confirmed this in one of their audio podcasts. They also have said that viewers have seen the monster a few times, but we didn't know it.
Finally, they mentioned that some (not all) of the times we have seen Walt after the end of season 1, he was really the monster.
No, the producers confirmed the spider was the monster, look at the video "Black smoke, secrets revealed" and look around the 16:00 mark or somewhere in it, and a producer gave a list of things that were and weren't the monster, and they confirmed that the spider that bit Nikki was the monster.

The monster can take different forms. The spider form it takes is not its true form. We don't know what that form is yet (a great deal of information on the monster is still unclear).

This was a good episode.. and the reason so many spiders came is because he swatted a "Female" spider on his neck, release it's pheromones attracting many more.. I actually really liked this episode, pretty f'd up being buried alive, funny to think someone on the island there 2.7 million dollars worth of diamonds? something like that...

i would be suprised if that was true.
Remember when the guy beforehand said that when someone is paralyzed by that spider, a swarm of them come, it doesnt mean that the monster morphed into the spiders.
Also, the producers of lost said that the monster is not a security system.

Maybe the 'noise' is just a general term. I mean, we all know that the monster was a 'security system', but maybe the 'monsters' isnt the only one in this 'system' u know... Maybe the spiders are other type of security guard, and the 'noise' sounds when this 'system' is activated... Well, its just a theory... u.u

its definitely the monster. its been confirmed by the producers that the monster took form of the spiders. the sound it faintly there but in the end (ITS THERE) also there are 3 spiders that appear. There have been theories of links between cerberus(three headed dog beast) and the smoke monster.

I'm afraid description isn't correct. The monster did take the form of a spider. Damon Lindelof and Carleton Cuse (for those that don't know, they are the two main writers on the show) have confirmed this in one of their audio podcasts. They also have said that viewers have seen the monster a few times, but we didn't know it.
Finally, they mentioned that some (not all) of the times we have seen Walt after the end of season 1, he was really the monster.

No, the producers confirmed the spider was the monster, look at the video "Black smoke, secrets revealed" and look around the 16:00 mark or somewhere in it, and a producer gave a list of things that were and weren't the monster, and they confirmed that the spider that bit Nikki was the monster.

The monster noise was right there, right before the spiders, and the spider that bit Nikki was Yemi, the Medusa spider, an incarnation of the monster, so yes the monster was the spider and the smoke and I guess the lights and whatever the F else Im not 100% on it im new to the series actually. Also, WTF was that with Prowsky and RELISIX, Im not bashing either of them Im just curious, I mean Prowsky made a statement and RELISIX replied with suck my big balls bitch, just curious what all that was.

to all of you that think that spiders are the monster: the spider that bit paullo was a female, and when he squashed it, it released feromones that attracted the males. in the earlier flashbacks dr arzt tells nikki that when she needs help about finding the bag!! how the hell would a spider be able to yank a pilot out from an aeroplane, beat him up really bad and the put him inte an 30 foot tree??

The monster can take different forms. The spider form it takes is not its true form. We don't know what that form is yet (a great deal of information on the monster is still unclear).
And CPLomeli is correct. Damon Lindelof and Carleton Cuse who are the main writers of the show have stated the spider that bit Nikki was really the monster in a different form.
