Whether or not COS is a policymaking position is also irrelevant. He will be in the White House everyday and serve as one of the most important advisors of the Obama admin. He will have the Great One's ear on virtually every issue, especially Mideast policy and how that relates to appeasing the various American Jewish factions (the majority of whom, while not militant Likudniks or Zionists, still advocate a position of excess support, contrary to American interests).

Even if things remain relatively stable, the types of people Obama's surrounded himself with, coupled with his promise to increase troop levels in Afghanistan and make cross-border incursions into Pakistan (without Pakistani approval, something even Bush wasn't dumb enough to do) suggest there's nothing to be optimistic about.

One would think that would be a barrier, but never underestimate the power of the War Party. Conditions aren't bad enough to where they couldn't borrow a few trillion more and just simply print what they don't borrow. Depending on what happens (either a real terrorist attack, false flag, combination...) the eternally gullible US public will be easily convinced to make sacrifices (propaganda organs will tell us to make like the Greatest Generation for FDR's holy WW2, etc).
