I think part of the design was a powerful heat sink that absorbed the heat energy of the flame, leaving pure thrust.

The very idea of exhaust that burned cold wouldn't exist until at least the 70's, during the designing of the world's first stealth plane.

@daydaviddunn: well the point is that if anyone could have made it during that time it was him although I doubt the technology would have allowed him to make such a long range Jetpack since not even today have they been able to make one that could fly but for a few minutes at best

Yeah, he had the contract for the Hercules (basically a jumbo jet prototype) and for a reconissance spy plane (which unfortunately never made it into production after the accident). He also bribed some government officials to gain favor for the Hercules contract.

For Howard Hughes, he would never truely scrap a project like the way he does in this movie. Even if the Nazi's did try to steal a prototype, his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder wouldn't allow him to stop work on it.
