@mytwocentsful Uh No. The she is a real female. Michael Stipe writes about characters. Some real, some made up. In this case this is a female character who is a character he made up. A person he says he goes back and visits. She Just Wants to Be is like a sequel to Daysleeper. Daysleeper is about a person who works in an office at night. Michael doesn't write autobiographical very much.

Michael has used a lyric stand since the very beginning in the early 80's. Now he uses a lyric stand and a monitor. It's just one of his traditions. You figure he doesn't listen to his own songs so would forget the lyrics. I mean I wouldn't be able to remember the lyrics either. That's just one of his unique qualities.

This is probably the most underrated song off from Reveal. This was the song that captured my attention and I've never lost interest in this song. I especially love it live, when michael dances around and Peter is playing a nice solo on that slick F guitar.

He's unique. I love his dancing. I find his pelvic moves quite sexy.  Most men at the age well at the time he was 43 cannot dance so loosely. And now at 47 He still has it.

yeah this is from the reveal album.

there was a show on tv in the uk called later with jools holland and rem played this one along with the lifting and reno.

stipe explained what the songs were about and the song the lifting is a prequel(spelling) to the song daysleeper.

i hope someone loads up that show.

That's not what this song is about at all. It's about a woman who had a bad past. But now is so much better than her past and she's learning to relive her life for the better.

an odd song about a self-obsessed woman in the midst of a silly exstential crisis (she knows this, she feels that, she should fucking get a job), all redeemed somehow by stipe's dancing and peter buck's amazing guitar. it works, kind of, in a way...

Interesting interpretation. Glad interpretation of art is personal, because I think you're way off. I see it a person (who happens to be a woman) who has finally realized that she is not defined by the past. Stipe's dancing doesn't redeem anyone, but it sure is hot!
