@zapple100 No, Zapple! This is not Jormas own composition, I think this is an old Blind Boy Fuller song but itś in the traditional ragtime style. Arlo did similar licks, true, but that was in 1967! If you have heard "bless its pointed little head" with JA (recorded in late 1968) you here a similar short improvisation in between two Airplane songs...
@jefhow Saw Papa John In La Jolla Ca. at some club at the top of a hotel around 85, a few of Airplane and Starship fans were there mostly Yuppies though, he started to explain he used to play with a band called the Jeferson Airplane (snicker) and he was telling the people not in the know , they were amazing bunch of "kids" called them Marathoners, for the fact they would play for hours. Glad that I saw the "kids" and Papa (back in the day)
Saw the band in Eau Claire, Wisconsin - Winter of 73 ish...it was cold, the concert was Extraordinary on a dark, wintry evening in the heart of the North.
no doubt on bleecker st. NYC ,,,psychedelic scene cool kidz of all ages,, nice smell in the theater...jerry G . showed up to jam,, they played till 3am... them wuz the daze..oh yeah!!! Papa John Creach was ON,,, killer fiddle from acid astral stonezonez,, love happenin' all kindz o' strange and normal/norml peeple,,what a scene!!! genius and supergroove ...let's get back to those utopian dreams.solar wind.grow it! you know it!
This was a song that totally captured the freewheelin vibe of growing up in California in the late sixties and early seventies, playing the album LOUD in a van on Hwy 101 heading up to San Francisco to see the Dead at Winterland Arena! Great memories for a cold afternoon here in England!

Sounds like Arlo Guthrie stole the music to use for Alice's Restaurant.

Oh, it's an oldie. Many different versions. Not sure the original writer.
Man...love this band.

Does anyone know who wrote this tune and when?

Bob Carleton
First recorded, I believe, by Blind Boy Fuller as "Truckin My Blues Away" which is where R. Crumb got the inspiration for his famous comic strip.
