I have been asked if i'm french, bulgarian, sirian, spanish and romanian. truth is I was born and raised in Blackpool yet i dont look "typical english"

I am from Hungarian( from Novi-Sad , Serbia) background and when I go to Central-Eastern Europe I notice the Roma people( called Cigany) are very dark. Roma are not the end all and be all of the gypsies. They are just eastern european ones, There are many different gypsies with differing hair colour, eye and skin colour who are romanies.
Yes they are lighter skinned than the eastern Roma but they are a branch of the Sinti people. They never said they were Roma, but they are a branch of the romani people distinct from the Roma as are the French manouch, Spanish kale and scandinavian Romanisael are not Roma as well but Romanies.

I am related to pure blooded kalderash who have fair hair eyes and skin- my dads father was of kalderash and lovara stock and his hair was light brown and had green eyes. he married a hald gaji half romanichal who was darker than he was, and my father came out very brown but with blue eyes. Our culture, laws, taboos, music, is actually closer to ancient jewdaism than to anything indian- only our language and spicy food is indian

sorry but i think she has some truth to it, but today it's hard to really separate a gipsy from any race. Feel free to visit the worlds largest genetic genealogy company in the world, Family Tree DNA and take a look at the many Jewish DNA studies being done, and compare Jewish DNA results to Romany DNA results, you will find not one Jewish male to date has been found carrying Y Haplo Group H1a.
If there were such a Jewish / Romany kinship as you claim, some Jewish males should have been found in Y Haplo H1a, and that is not the case.

Actually your quite wrong, dark skin is not a pre-requesit for authentic Romany identity or culture. Roma and Irish Pavee do not mix very well at that so you have generalised that his ancestors were irish travellers. That actually is quite offensive to the English/British Romany people. Yes most Rom in the UK were darker, but after WWII even in Europe you get blond Romany in Germany and Eastern Europe, also the Finnish and Swedish Romany people have fair skin and some blond hair. To be a white or slight lyolive skin toned is also normal in all Romany peoples east and west. Although the dark complection predominates in the east of Europe. All Romany people have maried out as it were and it would only take three gaje in 100 years to make a difference to the looks.

here in Sweden first came the romnichals sinti and the finnish Kaales. very early from after 1400, it wouldnt surprise me if they werent among the first tribes to wander here to scandinavia. Actually the first record of Roma in the UK was in the 1500s in Scotland they were dark skinned and were Roma. I am very interested in Romany history and roots. I am from Hungarian( from Novi-Sad , Serbia) background and when I go to Central-Eastern Europe I notice the Roma people( called Cigany) are very dark. Why are the Traveller or Irish Gypsy peoples lighter and appear to be fair? Are "Travellers" all Roma? Why are they fair and generally lighter?

Roma are not the end all and be all of the gypsies. They are just eastern european ones, There are many different gypsies with differing hair colour, eye and skin colour who are romanies.
Yes they are lighter skinned than the eastern Roma but they are a branch of the Sinti people. They never said they were Roma, but they are a branch of the romani people distinct from the Roma as are the French manouch, Spanish kale and scandinavian Romanisael are not Roma as well but Romanies.

The language is not an indicator of how pure romani genes are. Spanish Romanies are romanies and no longer speak the language. Slovakian Roma have 80% genes of indian percentage which is more than the Romanian.
Das dumas Romanies says Romanian Romanies is not a pure language and has a lot of gaje words as well. No Romani dialect is 100% the same as sandskrit.
But all Romanies across Europe be they pale skinned Sinti, Romanichal or some darker Roma share a common heritage and culture.

Also there are sinti people with blond hair an American Lovara Roma told me that. Romanichal, manouch and Sinti come from the same ethnic branch of the Romanies. As you can see by the comment by pilomaya Elvis is darker looking but still has Smith Romanichal family.

Its strange how over the almost 1000 years we've been in europe people mix and are taken ino families. Off hand I recall that all roma groups have gaje ancestors. No one is 100% asian or original Romani blood. Even the slovakian Romungros have 20-50% gaje DNA.

I am related to pure blooded kalderash who have fair hair eyes and skin- my dads father was of kalderash and lovara stock and his hair was light brown and had green eyes. he married a hald gaji half romanichal who was darker than he was, and my father came out very brown but with blue eyes. Our culture, laws, taboos, music, is actually closer to ancient jewdaism than to anything indian- only our language and spicy food is indian

All of which we have. I speak Romanies I also agree with what you say about romani culture. We have ways of doing things from preparing food, social taboos and clean and non clean things. sorry but i think she has some truth to it, but today it's hard to really separate a gipsy from any race. A lot of them are white, blond hair, blue eyes, and only if they tell you or if you get to hear them speak you will know that they are gypsy. They have their own gypsy language. :) Their own culture..music..etc.

How is their truth in it? Well if colours a reference to gypsy race then turkish gypsies have darker skin than the European gypsies so are they more gypsy? Also non-Romanies from spain and italy will intermix with gypsies in those countries so how is skin colour an indicator?
Actually Romanichal gypsies speak a dialect of romanies and spoke an inflected form in the UK till the 1950s when the last ones died in Wales. A Romanichal Dr. Ian Hancock sits at the UN for all Romanies.

Well the real truth is not really know where they really came from, but they did a study i think on gypsy bones in the past comparing it to the indians..and they discovered more chromozones that were the same as yours then comparing it to the other race it was not as much. That's how they think we are closer to you. But i would not put my finger on it. haha..but yeah...cheerz.

Feel free to visit the worlds largest genetic genealogy company in the world, Family Tree DNA and take a look at the many Jewish DNA studies being done, and compare Jewish DNA results to Romany DNA results, you will find not one Jewish male to date has been found carrying Y Haplo Group H1a.
If there were such a Jewish / Romany kinship as you claim, some Jewish males should have been found in Y Haplo H1a, and that is not the case.

You are very correct! DNA testing on Romany clearly proves a DNA connection to India / Pakistan and to some in the Middle East.
The Kalash Tribe of Pakistan are one specific people whom carry Y Haplo Group H* in larger numbers then anyone anticipated.
The European Romany males are proven to be in Y Haplo Group H1a, which is found in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and in smaller numbers through out the Middle East.

until then it was ALL one country one India.
Pakistanis were and still are part of the Punjab, and many Pakistanis still speak Punjabi, Urdu, Saraiki, Potowari and Pashto.
Indians and Pakistanis are basically the same people, and their languages as ALL the hundreds of indian and pakistani dialects ALL come from from Sanskrit en.

You are wrong that Indians and Pakistani are the same people. Let me tell you a few facts about Pakistan. The only group present in India that is related to Pakistanis are the Punjabi people and Rajputs. Although you will find Indian looking people in southern Pakistan, but they are mostly refugees, who came from central and southern India.
Than there are some Indian people of Dravidian origin in Pakistan aswell. They are mostly dark skinned.

Actually your quite wrong, dark skin is not a pre-requesit for authentic Romany identity or culture. Roma and Irish Pavee do not mix very well at that so you have generalised that his ancestors were irish travellers. That actually is quite offensive to the English/British Romany people. Yes he looks a bit more pale than the standard eastern European Rom, but what does that prove?

Also their are Romany groups that are just as light skinned as he is here in continental Europe. Also groups in Turkey that are darker than Roma in eastern europe. No Roma is ethnically pure and UK Roma are Romnipen (have a romany way), language and culture that is Romany.
Read a book called, we are the Romany people on google books, which says UK roma are of the Romany people and not Pavee Irish or any other ethnic group.

Yes most Rom in the UK were darker, but after WWII even in Europe you get blond Romany in Germany and Eastern Europe, also the Finnish and Swedish Romany people have fair skin and some blond hair. To be a white or slight lyolive skin toned is also normal in all Romany peoples east and west. Although the dark complection predominates in the east of Europe. All Romany people have maried out as it were and it would only take three gaje in 100 years to make a difference to the looks.

@6925319 actually the irish pavee and Romani of the UK dont tend to mix, yes he will have some european genes (as all Romany will have) but the two groups tend not to mix. Roma though are only the eastern european branch of the romany people and the other groups sinti, spanish kale, finish kale, romanichal and manouch of france are not Roma but still romanies none the less. English Romanichals still speak a varient of Romani chib and are not irish pavee (its offensive to say that).

Most of the Roma are one of the 12 tribes of Israel. That is why there are different twist on the language. All you have to do is get blood work done we have a gene that only Roma and Jewish people share. We converted in Europe so that they would sell us goods and that didn't go over so well, we were still hated like our brothern. all it takes is a blood test.

here in Sweden first came the romnichals sinti and the finnish Kaales. very early from after 1400, it wouldnt surprise me if they werent among the first tribes to wander here to scandinavia. Most of them have been heavily mixed up many are dark blond with green eyes, the finish kaales have been very ortodox not mixing much with anybody and some are still as dark as indians after over a thousand years.

The sinti dialects should have been oughly close to sanskrit and I think the sinti many of them were hired in the military they had a great reputation as soldiers and have a special tradition with knifes, and could possibly be descendents of Indian rajputs.

I was just reading comments about gypsies but you mentioned the word 'rajputs'. Its a wrong statement. I am a Pakistani muslim Rajput and you know what, Romanis are by no means Rajputs. The main pure Rajput Dna is Haplogroup r1a-YDNA. Whereas the main Romani DNA is haplogroup H, which is found in great conc in south Indian Tamils.
Anyways Rajputs are a tribe with a warrior reputation, so many people in Pakistan who are not Rajputs call themselves Rajputs, because they have a good reputation here

I have never heard any conclusive proof one way or another of whether we came FROM India or THROUGH India. Our DNA is all over India which is proof that we spent a long time there or were from there.
I am eagerly awaiting conclusion of DNA studies about this subject.

Actually the first record of Roma in the UK was in the 1500s in Scotland they were dark skinned and were Roma.
