this movie is as faithful to the games the same way the Titanic animated movie is accurate to what really happened, but so what? the Lord of the Rings movies acted the same way and everyone loved them despise not being accurate to the books AT ALL.

I gave up on video games by the time I hit middle school, and so the last Mario game with which I was really familiar was the launch title for SNES. That being said, I disagree with anyone who claims this had nothing to do with the games, there were references in almost every frame, many of them quite clever. I think a lot of kids who only know Mario 64 and on might feel that way, since a lot things that were introduced later aren't here. Start by downloading an NES emulator and then see.

This movie & TMNT are about in the same ballpark. Ive only ever played the 2d games & about all of the Mario Kart's. They did an awesome job to make it acceptable to a general audience. It would have been a lot worse if they tried to make it more like one of the games, or at least only appealing to gamers & kids. I can accept that it has little to do with the Mario Game universe, in that the only consistency in the franchise has been "Mario saves Princes"

Before you say you want a live action SMB movie, THEY DID SPEED RACER to the tee like the cartoon, twas awful (coulda been great). Still, the Mushroom Kingdom is a lot like Wonderland and Tim Burton nailed that. As someone mentioned, nothing should be explained: a plumber falls through a pipe into a world full of giant mushrooms, he can fly, grow bigger, and meets creatures. A giant lizard wants him dead and a princess needs rescuing. Kinda like Gulliver's travels, cept Gulliver is super.

Honestly, people can fry me all they want for this, but... I actually liked this. But I understand why others wouldn't - the thing is, most people go into a movie with a title they know and love wanting it to be as faithful to the source as possible, but that is so incredibly rare... and when it does happen, it tends to be poorly executed.

This movie is not faithful to the games, and that's very obvious, but it's still quite obviously based on Mario. This is really more of a grimdark Steampunk re-imagining of the Mario universe. It's definitely a lot darker - I mean, Yoshi got friggin stabbed by that Lena woman! But I do like the way a lot of things were done. For example those "Stomper" boots were a nice way to represent the supreme jumping presented in the games while still keeping the brothers as (relatively) normal people.
