Yes, it runs the price of your ticket up quickly but it includes all of your meals and you have an attendant to take care of the room. At most major stops like Chicago there is a special lounge for "sleeper" passengers where you have nice furniture, free drinks, newspapers, and Wifi. The door from the lounge leads right out to the cars when it is time to board too. If you wish to go out into the mall at the train station, you can check your bags in the lounge. Very handy!
We're thinking of taking the Empire Builder. We took the California Zephyr to Chicago then hopped on the Cardinal to Baltimore. It was a round trip in first class bedrooms. I've uploaded vids if you want to take a look. PS there are one and two person "roomettes" but they are cramped and do not have a bathroom. Thanks for a great video!
I don't think there is a single person sleeper. There are 2 and 4 person rooms with and without toilet and shower. Go to amtrak.com and, in the "New Riders", box there is a "Sleeping Choices" line. Click on that and see the choices on the different trains. The coach seats are very comfortable to sleep in if you aren't a snorer like me, not as private as a sleeper but very cost effective.
No, the roomettes are consideably smaller as Amtrak are able to fit two roomettes across from one another with the hall in the middle whereas a deluxe bedroom shown in this video has one cabin and the hall on the edge of the other side of the car. The deluxe bedrooms sofa/bed is not parallel to the hall whereas a roomette bed is parallel to the hall. Best watch a roomette video...
Yes, there is a lockable door to the next compartment. It is hard to recognize in the video or in person for that mattter. We had a lot of laughs about the width of the toilet compartment which was very tight for a guy who has a 36" waist. The big advantage of having a tight fit is that you won't slide around when the train sways! I took my shower while the train was moving and have to agree with the sign in the shower which says "You may find it more comfortable to shower sitting down".
A few similarities but a LOT of differences from their Feb 1952 version that I went in as a 5 year old with my mother from Ephrata, WA to Chicago. The toilet was not sequestered - just somehow converted to a wash basin. Also, the corridor door was windowless. And, there was a lockable connecting door to the next compartment.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.

It's a nice accommodation. I rode one both way on the City of New Orleans a while back.

Enjoyed the tour of the room... I've never traveled in a bedroom and now I plan to do just that sometime. Thanks for sharing.

The locks and handles for the connecting door can be seen just above the chair at about 2:47.
