They were communists. Marxist doctrine and communism has caused more human suffering and death than any disease and certainly far more than Fascism has, not that Fascism is a good thing. Both ideologies appeal to elitist stooges that are unable to thrive in competitive atmospheres for one reason or another. They vilify success and demonize personal liberty. Abraham Lincoln would be ashamed to have his name associated with this kind of scum!

Yes, the Communist Party organized alot of the Americans who fought Franco, but good people from all over Europe and the U.S. went to fight Franco and the fascists for various reasons. Was Hemingway a communist? Auden? Also, in the America of the 1930s many educated, decent people WERE communists - it wasn't so stigmatized then. @PersonForPeaceLondon Stalin and Mao were worse than Hitler or Mussolini, especially body count wise. The Lincoln brigade fought to turn Spain into a Soviet puppet state nothing more. For that reason the only honor they get are from marxist American officals which outside of cesspools like San Francisco are few and far between. Thank God they failed.  Spain owes more of it's prosperity today to Franco than these communists.

If the Abraham Lincoln Brigade is praised for defending democracy, well and good. However, history books point out that the republic did a lot of bad things--burning churches, killing priests and nuns, murder of political opponents, Furthermore, by the time the war ended, the republic was basically communist.

Franco spent DECADES as a loyal U.S. ally! When he came in, Spain was a wreck. When he went out, it was prosperous....

When I said, "By the time the war ended, the republic was basically communist," I was talking about the last year or so of the war. The President, Juan Negrin, was not a communist, but he could not stand up to them because they were giving his government too much aid. The republic was fatally divided into four groups: Labor Unions, Anarchists, Pro-Russian Communists, and Anti-Russian Communists. The Pro-Russian group got weapons from Stalin, and the republic did whatever they said to do.

Had the west shown some consistency and helped to protect a duly elected government from illegal overthrow, the government would not have been so dependent upon Stalin. Hitler and Mussolini committed not only aid, but troops and bomber pilots, and engaged in the first ever civilian targeted bombings. If you're fighting for your life, you're going to take what lifeline is thrown. I agree with the historians who argue that the lack of resolve from the west emboldened Hitler and Mussolini.

Spain was the first defeat of democracy, previous second world war against fascist. None lisend the cry of helppp, only internacional brigades with volunters around the world, like americans in Lincol Brigade with heavy casualties during the war. It was form by comunist, anarquist, members of democratic party, trade unions, poets, writers, and students. They fought hardly and brave for stop nazis and fascist.
