What do you suggest be a good blade to start with. I have been looking into straight razor shaving for a while and dont know anyone that does it. Just looking for some advice on it. What strop do you use, brush & soap?
@TheC4ranch blade: anything from straight razor design or rup razor will be sharp enough to shave with when you get it. for the strop, there are so many manufacturers, but rup razor or tony miller will have the best. brushes are very personal, you can get a good start with a boar brush from your local drugstore, same for soap (although I make my own)
i've recently become very interested in switching to a straigt razor.. i'm wonding if however i will have to abandon my usual shave lotion and aftershave.. i use jason 6-1 beard and skin therepy.. it's made with aloe and jojoba beads.. i've used it for years and i'm pretty fond of it.. could i just stick to my usual shaving methods? and just replace my old mach3 with a straight razor? like.. do i really need the brush and all that?
having never used that particular product, i cannot say. some products will work and others will not. the foam in a can will NOT work well. it's all a matter of degrees. proper shave soap and a badger brush will give you the BEST results, but other stuff may be alright.
also, you WILL need a strop, and eventually sharpening stones unless you plan to send the razor off.
thanks for your superfast reply.. i'm going to go ahead and buy my gear.. can you recommend a site to order from? so far i'm leaning toward a dovo.. since it seems what everyone recommends..
I collect straight razors and shave with them regularly. Make my own strops, too. I use anything I want to, from plain water to hand soap to Edge shaving gel, and get good results with all of them. Abandoned the brush 20 years ago.
A german made razor is usually the best choice. Many old barbers have razors they don't use anymore. You might be able to make a deal for razor, hone, and strop. Just sand the surface of the strop before you try to use it.
get a piece of cowhide and sand it flat and smooth, that's all it is. some guys prefer the feel of horsehide, but cowhide is far cheaper and works fine
tips for the neck area? i can't seem to get a clean smooth shave with my straight razor. especially on the neck, i get that sand paper feel when i'm done.
Hi, I wanted to know, I just recently buoght a straight razor, but i need to get it sharpened. How can it be done. Those strops are way to above my budget since i'm a student.
i can recommend several guys who sharpen razors that i personally know, but you WILL need a strop to refresh the edge every day. you can make your own strop for a smooth leather strap, you do not need an expensive one.
I am going to begin shaving with a disposible straight razor (the ones where you replace the blade every 5 to 6 shaves. I prefer disposible straight razors, Do you know how effective straight razors are compared to electric foil ones (2 foils)
this is an easier option for a beginner, as sharpening the blade (honing) is by far the most difficult part of shaving. i have used a 3-foil norelco reflex and the shave it delivered was completely inferior in every way to a good straight shave.
however, it's pretty hard to cut yourself with a foil shaver, so i can see why some people buy them :)
nothing, the shaving soap is all. that's the advantage (one of the advantages) of using a straight razor: constant exfoliation. my skin is way healthier than when I used a disposable.
It almost sounds like you're running water during your entire shave. That'd be a huge waste of water.

I find that I need to do multiple passes for my neck in order to get it smooth.
jockeys41 2 years ago
Does this give a smoother shave than a disposable?
Drac39 2 years ago
way, WAY smoother
jockeys41 2 years ago
I might have to get one later on then. My fear though is that my face would look like the Joker in learning how to do it

PM me if you have any questions about where to get one, how to sharpen it, etc.

hey man great video you also have nice smooth skin my question is what do you wash your face with?
thegame245 2 years ago
nothing, the shaving soap is all. that's the advantage (one of the advantages) of using a straight razor: constant exfoliation. my skin is way healthier than when I used a disposable.
jockeys41 2 years ago
thats whats up so do you wash your forehead wit the shaving soap as well?
thegame245 2 years ago
no, just wash that normally in the shower
jockeys41 2 years ago
Are you using just the weight of the blade on the face? Or are you adding more then that?
c9ari 2 years ago
just the weight of the blade. if you push harder, you'll almost certainly cut yourself or get razorburn.
