ce sont les années difficiles, celle où Callas essaie de renaître et de durer. L'art est là bien sûr, mais la voix est blessée, et elle ne semble pas "sentir" le personnage.
@belcunto Fancy meeting you here! Yes, she has personal touch as an artist, and a strong one, too! That's why everything she sings sounds so different, so fresh.
I found a very interesting video on Maria Callas on YT, a program called "l'invité du Dimanche", with English subtitling (my, her French is so DARN good!). It's a bit long, I couldn't watch it in 1 sitting, but some fascinating discussion takes place throughout the show. I'll send you the videos, if you like.
this is surprising coming from Callas, a detached, unimaginative and colorless interpretation. Listening to Caballe's version, this piece proves more beautiful than Casta diva, but here Callas makes it sound just like a run-of-the mill pretty little tune. Not her best.
this rendition is beautiful...you can detect the vocal strain but its still effing amazing....the pathos is incredible...you can hear the desperation and yearning of a mother
I mean she brought many Donizzeti`s and Bellini`s tragic heroines back to life and at the periode she did it, bel canto tragic operas were not performed as often as today, they were "rediscovered" at that time, so after her Lucia and Anna Bolena it was probably enough for opera producers as these operas were considered "old-fashioned". She was even refused by Bing to perfom one of her best role -Anna Bolena- at Met as a boring and non attractive opera for audience!!!
This a wonderful interpretation of this aria by M. Callas. Love it..Magnifique, unique and original.

Bei all den stimmlichen Schwächen, die diese Aufnahme hat, habe ich dennoch alles in allem keine Bessere von einer anderen Sängerin gefunden!

Yes, this is very good singing, despite some diminishing of Callas's powers at this point in the career. No one could turn a phrase like she could.

Ma dove??!

Because, alas, at the time her voice was in shambles. Besides, we had Caballé and Sutherland.
It's a very sad recording to listen.

I think so, Caballe was muche better!!

Yes, and Gruberova is the best of them all.
Callas is the gold standard and the real value of opera music.
