I wish critics would stop labelling this man's works as just "eye candy." There are deeply, almost subconsciously, haunting messages perched within the imagery. The stories are simple, yet effective. An image tells a thousand words so there's no need for "filler" dialogue for exposition. I don't get why they hail the Cohen brothers as "masters" of witty dialogue, yet fail to appreciate Tarsem as the "master" of cinematography. This man truely loves the art of cinema.
@TheNEONSociety I know. Some people cannot get past the scenery and miss the whole point of the film. Tarsem does not throw a bunch of stunning landscapes together with some story. The stories he tells have so much to them and the scenery is complementary to it. I will say that I love the Cohen brothers. Very talented, but yes, so is Tarsem.
SPOILER kind of.. but how come he says no special effects, but in the movie near the end there's birds coming out of the mystics mouth.. unless he's telling us the actor was actually spewing live birds out of his mouth
I knew there was something extremely special about this movie. 20 years of writing, 17 years of location shooting, shot in 24 countries and 4 1/2 years to make, that says it all why every scene was so breath taking and blew me away. Most Hollywood lazy bums would do this in a year with CGI and filter our mind with junk Special FX. This guy seriously gives me hope that I can follow my dreams and see it come true. Thats all the motivation i needed to continue working on my movie and video projects
Loved this movie. But did anyone notice the video homages to Jodorowsky and Peter Brook in this? eg---Charle's Darwin: same outfit as first bandit in El Topo, birds flying from mouth--birds and flowers fly from slain students wounds in "Holy Mountain", the death of Bhishma in Brook's "Mahabharata", ( also played by an African actor ), turned into an arrow pincushion. NOT a criticism of this great film, just interesting.
@misshalicious intelligence my friend. intelligence is a limited commodity, thus there are hoards of stupid people, amused by the simplest of idea, and completely unable to see how mesmerizing a movie such as this could be.
its sad, but genius such as this is only understood by few.
i adore this movie very much....simple storyline but touching, great acting, awesome choices of actors and locations, and the haunting music .... i wouldn't mind spend money to get the original copy and could watch it billion times.
Well, maybe not 100%. For instance the stuff moving under the skin of the mystic. Also when Otta Benga falls over riddled with arrows, I know it was a prop, but I imagine it took some painting out etc. Some computer aided effects too, such as the birds flying out of the mystics mouth. Not much though! Wonderful film!
@drcyclps Oh yeah, I forgot about the birds. I think they did something with the skin of the mystic on a separate prop that looked like skin or something.
Did you see the the small bulge inside the skin that was moving on the map made on the person's body? That's CGI fro sure! I say, the locations were all real. :D
This film is one of the most visually stunning pieces of work I've ever seen. I'm really not surprised that it took 17 years of location scouting. Its deep and has a strong emotional impact. If you are the kind of person who occasionally cries when watching a movie this one will have you in floods.
(What I kept hearing throughout the interview)

An absolutely stunning piece of work. Visually enthralling, Intelligent.
Scripted and acted out to perfection.
Make no mistake, Tarsem Singh is up there with the greats of film makers.
His work deserves the full attention of any film lovers out there who like to be challenged intellectually and also fully entertained.

The child actress used in this film is so good, none of that phony Dakota Fanning-like presence. I loved her in this film.
