Touch Me had been written as Hit Me by Robbie as kind of loving taunt after a spat w/ his wife and was their 3rd biggest hit. Jim wasnt crazy about the song: No way am I going to sing those lyrics,
At the end of the song, Morrison can be heard saying, "Stronger than dirt," which was the slogan of the Ajax household cleaning company, because the last four chords of "Touch Me" were the same as those in an Ajax commercial.
great performance and the reason that robby krieger has a black eye is because him and jim got in a fight with some people who were against "long hairs", they tried to give him makeup before the show started but he wouldnt allow them to
Gawd "Touch Me" is such a great song. I guess a lot of die-hard Doors fans at the time thought it was the end of them because they thought this sound was too commercial.
Can you imagine what this performance would do to the TV audience of a lame, alcohol-drenched, limpdick show today? Say American Idol or whatever drivel the American public has let itself stoop to these days as its psychopathic leaders look for yet another war to boost the economy while wasting young lives and ruining the ideal of the Founding Fathers?
Caspercat9 is a leading Biblical Scholar. Received Doctorate in New Testament Greek in 1965, Masters in Hebrew in 1968, Doctor of Divinity in 1971. NOT!!!! Look braintrust, my credentials are that I saw this TV program the night it happened, and it was a great performance, unlike your attempt at portraying someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Even the most liberal scholar would laugh and call you a moron.
tommy smothers is cool--i was 9 in 1968 and just loved their show! my parents watched them too- they were ok with them cause they had short hair! lol
smothers brothers being anti-protesters? Doors looking good considering live TV. Sax player at end stole show. Nov '68 Doors release Waiting for the Sun. Dec '68 Stones release Beggar's Banquet. after 2 years of pot, LSD, STP, speed, reds, yellows, smack, at age 18 in Dec 1968 I gave up drugs (except some social pot and beer). then listen to music of '69: Led Zepplin, Blind Faith, Jeff Beck, Creedence C R, Sanatana, The Band, not hip to MC5 at the time. Have a great rest of 2008 w/tecno yeah.
Look at all the various stories on how Krieger got the black eye. In only 40 years several stories have emerged - fact has become fiction. Same thing happened with the historical Jesus - different myths emerged to form the BS that is the New Testament - pure myth. The Doors are awesome.
You are SO right at 6:29 in that clip that is one big shiner. Wonder what the story is behind that one? Has anyone read the biography? A black eye like that has to be mentioned.
The story according to an interview I watch with robbie goes like this. Him and jim was in LA and some hicks where hasseling jim and jim wanted to fight them. one of the guys swung at jim and and Robbie got in the way and he hit robbie. So robbie took a punch for Jim. The rumor that Jim hit robbie is completely false and even robbie denies that happened. teh interview in on the DVD the doors collection under the title dance on fire. listen to the comentary on the video section of the video.
Actually.. I talked to Robbie on Rockline about this.. It was an automobile accident.. that is straight from Robbie's mouth.. so that's what I believe happened.
I think the Smothers Brothers political comedy was a great lead in to the Doors music. Did Jim almost miss a cue to sing during Touch Me? A great performance nonethess! Thanks for posting!
thatobserverguy: Robbie Krieger said in a later interview that Jim scared the whole band with his missing that cue 'c'mon, c'mon...' That's the magic of live music.
You know, i think he was just shaking the maracca thing down low in the interlude and got it tangled up in the mike. He shaking it like a banchee on the mike at the end of the song too.
Great performance!! Jim Morrison: often imitated, never duplicated. In all fairness though, the only song written completely by Morrison was the Title track, The Soft Parade, and Wild Child. Touch Me, Wishful Sinful among other were penned by Krieger. Good album, but Morrison was in his poetic peak with Strange Days.
Ray, Robbie, and John themselves state on their Doors dvd that it was on The Smothers Brothers show. The Doors didn't sing "Touch Me" on Sullivan. One song they did do on Sullivan was of course "Light My Fire".
Audie a small note of interest. When they got dumped from suliven the guy said you'll never play sullivan, jim said I just played sullivan, e pause and then said beside once a phlosopher, twice a pervert. and they they were thrown out of the studio.
Wow, what an asshole thing to say, the death comment.
In regards to musicality, well, Jim wasn't ever a musician, he's just a poet who can sing. Also he came up with his own melodies before the music was written, so Ray (organist) couldn't cover him in that department.
I agree with Koshomio! Soft Parade is a masterpiece album in every aspect. Only other pop album that rivals it's continuity in writing/performance/production is Steely Dan's "Aja." I favor the Parade though.
I liked how Jim cut out the "come on come on come on come on" in the second verse and cut right to the title. He sings it better here than he did on the record.
This is truly great! Touch me has such a wonderful melody. Sometimes you can get blase' about their music because it is so overplayed, but you can't deny its power after all these years.
I'll bet Phyllis didn't look so Kool 30 years later when she was coughing up a lung. We've come a long way baby! I wish there was some where to watch the old Smothers Brothers shows now. What a great show. I was too young to really get it the first time around.
Best doors video I've seen here so far. The dated intro and Kools commercial made it, thanks! I love Robbie's shiner and that Jim was having so much fun with that maraka he forgot to come in on the second verse ahah!
Did you miss the "long size" and "hey phyllis want to try this?" while he sticks out the pool cue stick? Not so subtle subliminal advertising. Great commercial history.
Amazing that they got Jim to the TV studio, standing and sober. This is the album where the doors were falling apart. I love the song but hated the arrangement. Strings and horns don't belong in any Doors song. IMHO.
Agree w/ everything you wrote. Although, I noticed that smile of Jim's, tava wrote about. This is the first TV performance of the Doors I remember watching (must have been at friend of my oldest sister's house, at five years old). This performance was got me to be a fan of the Doors (especially Jim -- his vocals, w/ him being sober, is amazing). The "Kool" cigarette ad is amusing, must have been just before cig ads were banned.
Robbie pretty much says in The Doors dvd that he kept Jim from getting beaten up. Rednecks were hassling them because of their long hair. Robbie took the hit.
Someone wrote on another site that Robbie got his shiner from rednecks who beat him up over his long hair. The Doors-Robbie, John, and Ray's exquisite musicianship firing up Jim Morrison's Heavenly growl. :)
Whoa! A cigarette commercial! Intersting bit of history! Thanks for sharing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Doors and this song-one of Robbie Krieger's gems. One of the greatest love songs EVER Imo. I always feel like Jim was singing it to his muse Pamela.
