I think the little brush is to clean the keys. Ink and other paper dust tends to build up in the little type hammers that strike the ribbon and paper.
I just bought one today for 5 dollars, however the carriage is in need of a cord attachment and some keys need adjusting. The quality is impressive. Mine has a dab of liquid paper to tell mine apart from your exquisite machine. Or describe my machine to the cops! Interesting how these things have come back into vogue, huh?

I have a really old one with a case. its a little sticky. there is a big "M" penciled into the case which is pretty cool

Cool! I have a 1950 model, which is slightly darker, but also has the characteristic green keys.

I have a Quiet Riter, just like this one. The difference is it is quieter and black plastic keys.
