i love this video. it reminds me when i used to fly to greece with olympic airlines as a kid. they used 747-200 from boston to athens. you could visit the cockpit even during flight or before. you could smoke on it too. now you cant even ask to see the cockpit. you'll get escorted off the plane or be asked 328372183 questions as to why you want to see it.
I love that... old school UAL captain.. white hair, thick glasses, smoking his cigarette... I'd rather have him at the controls if the shit hits the fan than these new chic's they've been hiring over there in the recent years.....
@solomonpilot767 That's because it was converted from analog to digital... If you were to watch it in its original form, it would probably be crystal. Cool Video!
@applesweeter 1) It's novel for a human being to be so high off the ground looking down at the Earth. 2) The cabin is smaller and more private than similarly situated main deck cabins, except for the nose section cabin which is extremely quiet and exclusive. 3) the main deck has higher ceilings and is wider with more room. The upper deck is cramped by comparison, but many like the intimacy. 4) Circular revolving waterbeds with satin sheets and mirrored ceilings instead of seats.
About your answer in questions 4, you design is wonderful. Waterbed make us feel confident in long-distance-flying. the mirror make us feel that we have more space.
@636555530 pilots bid on the routes on the master schedule based upon the aircraft type (if they're only rated to fly 737s, then they won't be bidding on the overseas 747 routes, obviously...hehehe) & their seniority w/the airline determines if they get the route or not. So, even if you're rated for the 747s, if you're the low man on the totem pole, you won't be getting many routes. That's why airlines love 757s, 767s & 777s because they all have very similiar if not identical type ratings.
So that was a United plane.. Funny how I didn't reconize the color. I guess this must have been made back in the early 90's. I know the -400 was the first modle to have a ext. top deck and with winglets.
Each of those engines probably produce around 63,000 lbs of thrust each.
@Skippy585 Yep, that was an older United livery used between 1974 to 1993. Actually, the stretched upper deck was introduced on the -200 as an option and made standard on the -300. The -400 is merely a continuation of the SUD. The SUD was even made as a retrofit kit for the -100 series but many carriers chose to retire the -100s for the longer range, more efficient -200, -300 & -400 series. :)
@Skippy585 No, unfortunately. I'm just an airplane enthusiast. :) One of the things that has helped me keep up with the various airliner models & types is Flight Simulator. I've only had the pleasure of flying on a 747 once in my life on a trip to Hawaii w/TWA (a 747-100) in 1992. The size of the aircraft was astonishing even then & they've gotten bigger since then. Maybe one day my financial situation will grow to fit my desire & I'll get to fly on one again albeit a newer model. :)
I never had the honor of fly either on the Concorde or the B-747. But if I ever fly to Europe from services with"the new Delta" it just might be a Jumbo 777 if not a B-747-4. I think there still useing the same brand of powerplants that NorthWest first fitted them with (PW-4000-94 fans).
@Skippy585 I'm pretty sure the Delta 747's are all fitted w/the PW powerplant. It wouldn't make sense to re-engine them to another brand since NW had all of the parts & spares for the PW when they got bought out. Airlines tend to take the tact of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" in that respect. I have a feeling, however, that Delta will probably retire the 747 since they prefer the 777 but they may surprise me.
Well, no doubt Pratt&Writtney is a very overlooked company these days since airlines or even companies such as FedEx seems to enjoy GE (known for the every so great CF6)or RR due to there popularity or market share. No doubt there as good as they say as in term of fuel economy and reliablity is concerned.
Pratt@Writt still produces some very impressive power plants though.
Such as the Pure Power 1000G (gear reduction turbo fan) and the F-135
The good old days when the Captain could give you a tour of the Aircraft even if you were not going on that flight. I'm a United Pilot and I miss those days.
Gone are the days when people can view the cock-pit eh, i remember when i was 15 and going to USA from Amstrdam i got a tour of a 747-400 got into the cock-pit 2 it was awsome
Thanks for the update, I was a kid at the time and didnt really paid attention to that kind of stuff, the one in sioux city is a hero story which is amazing.
I remember working these from JFK to NRT and HKG...Great bird to work...My favorite was First class galley position... but upper deck wasn't bad either...
you flew when being a pilot meant something. Now people are hiring pilots with very little flight-time, its insane. I WILL still become a pilot, but I will train well beyond the standards, because I do not beleive in going into the cockpit with hundreds of people trusting you will get them home safe and braking that promise to be very... nice? Seriously though, just keep in mind you are part of an elite group, did something many have and will dream of for years to come.
Dude, your dad is seriously cool. Nice job on the vid, you must feel quite privileged to have such unrestricted access to one of the greatest machines on earth.
